Varanasi Weavers - I

Varanasi is the most ancient and most sacred city in India on the banks of Ganga. Silk weaving tradition of Varanasi which is as old as the city is facing a great crisis and thousands of weavers are forced to give up their craft. This documentary shows a project to support them.

One more thing I would like to add i.e. in my home town Varanasi, we also make all traditional stoles wear by Catholic Cardinals in very special ceremony( for European Catholic Church) since very approximately 200 years.

I'm a handweaver so I can relate to this and, like moonberrymay, I am in complete awe. I buy, use and sometimes wear saris. Wearing saris is not only fun, they're also GREAT for decorating or making other garments and things out of them.

All traditional weaving technique of Asia are facing problems of distinction due to decreasing demand and invasion of China's textile. Without outside intervention of government and non governmental institution this intangible cultural heritage will dissapear. This documentary is about weavers in Varanasi, India which situation is not much different from weavers of Indonesia.
