During the 80’s, Radio Tanzania used to record our songs for free! We were paid allowances for recordings! Our Albums were launched over ‘Misakato’ & ‘Club-Raha Leo Show’! Our songs were played without demand for money!
Today, artists pay to record songs at private studios & and then keep paying various radio stations and DJs to promote their songs instead of radios to pay royalties for using their songs! Just imagine a day without ‘music’ over radios!
Royalties, which are the lifelines of musicians were not paid then or now. . We were paid royalties by ‘Voice of Germany’ & ‘Voice of America’ in the past without our request to them!! Varda Arts do not compromise with DJs and that is why our songs are not heard over radios and our fans think “Bendi imepotea!” That is the reason to download this song over the ‘Internet’. . Sadly, majority of common listeners are denied their rights to enjoy our songs through radios as they do not have excess to internet!
Varda Arts may have Awards. . but, local artistes do not benefit from it. . We have examples of how great artistes of our time died poor, humiliated, unsung and forgotten! Tanzania is a land of talents! The need is for the Ministry concerned to honor and financially facilitate local artistes instead of concentrating on Football!
Those days, a string of Guitar was not available in the country! Today when we import an instrument to earn a living, we pay double the amount as ‘Custom Duty’! The government give loan, concession to big companies, but the most powerful media that is ‘Music’ is treated as an after work activity, while they expect ‘quality music’!! From where will this quality come while their boat is drilled with holes and are asked to take it to the shore without a single drop soaking their clothes!! In other African countries, talent oriented jobs are highly rewarding!
Mwalimu Nyerere once asserted : “Hakuna sumu mbaya maishani kama Kukata Tamaa. .!!”
Thus we continue contributing our talent with the same spirit and a ray of hope on our newly elected President!
