Can you help me finding out the possible cause of why my alocasia albo leaves especially the white parts starts thinning going to become transparent with a hint of like faded brownish color kinda similar to as if it's over watered.... I got it 2 days ago and after repotting the white parts of the leaves dying.... I didnt even watered it the day i repotted coz the original soil is still moist so over watering obviously not the problem....... I put it indoor with bright indirect light
@WinnieLuthienThye3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Actually thats quite normal. The whiter the plant the faster the leaves will develop browning and die off. It is normal, not pretty, but normal. There is nothing you can do about it. Perhaps try a brighter light space than what you are giving it now. More light will allow more photosynthesis on the green parts, and that may allow the white leaves to live longer and brown slower.

Hello! Do you only water your alocasia when the substrate has completely dried out? Also what do u fertilise it with and how often? I’m getting one soon and hope that it can grow as well as yours!:-)
@WinnieLuthienThye3 жыл бұрын
hi Eliza :) I water the alocasia when the substrate is at about half dry to 2/3 dry, NOT completely dry. When I plant any new plant, I normally put some Osmocote slow release fertilizer into the substrate as a base. This needs to be topped up every 4 months. On top of that, I fertilize the plant with a foliar fertilizer + a soil improver (they come in as a set. Fertilizer is SunLand Aloe Vera Fertiliser, search in Lazada) These I do every 2 weeks, unless it is raining a lot (like year end) then every 3 weeks.

did you change soil after yellow leaf problem? i had same issue, i got this as present it really guilt me if alocasia die, i had in two days and it sprout new leaf fast before i potting on new soil. and after that it slowing down. and other leaf start yellowing. i keep guessing what to do with soil i use normal soil add some cocopeat. . and later the problem . i use some pine bark on it.
@WinnieLuthienThye4 жыл бұрын
No I didn't. It wasn't the soil problem for me. My substrate was well draining enough for the plant. My yellowing was cause by the mother plant shrinking to make way for plantlets to develop. My potting mix for this plant is cocochips, charcoal, leca balls and a bit of soil to bind. "normal soil add some cocopeat" I think this mix is too heavy for the plant. It retains too much moisture. Take the plant out and check to see if the roots are ok. They must look white and fleshy. If your roots look black and soft, cut those parts off. And repot in a smaller pot with chunkier substrate (bark is good to have inside but also add cocochips). The plant will produce one new leaf and an old leaf will die. It will keep doing that until the root system is big enough and strong enough to sustain more leaves. Slowly as the root system spreads, the plant will be able to sustain more leaves at one time.

It has a new leaf already growing but I don’t know when or it I should repot it or not. The roots look good on it. I looked at them as soon as I opened it. Right now it look like it’s trying to recover. What would you advise me to do so I don’t hurt my plant?
@WinnieLuthienThye3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your plant!! Do you know how long its been in the mail? What i normally do is like you, check the roots. If the roots are white and sturdy I will pot the plant immediately. Nothing to worry about. If the leaves are dried and limp then before I repot I will let the roots soak in water for half an hour (providing the rootball is ok) to let the plant 'drink'. During that time i will saturate cocochips in water. So once the plant is ready to come out, the cocochips are ready to be use with the plant. I even put some liquid fert in the water where the chips are saturating so that the chips will absorb some nutrients and the plant can use it later. Thats what i would do.

How is your plant so far? Recovered? Mine has suddenly turn yellow on me. Even the newest and last leave is yellowing. I worry the plant cannot survive if this goes on... anything I can do?
@WinnieLuthienThye2 жыл бұрын
Yea, it did recover from this. It was just yellowing becos of the new babies. However, I just recently lost the plant due to the prolong wet and cloudy season we had over last year and this. I not only lost this, I also lost my Thai Constellation. This rainy season really messed my plants up, there wasnt enough light coming into the balcony, and there wasnt enough heat to dry the soil quickly after the storms. Sigh... I do still have 2 of the babies, one is an albino so that's a write off, the other is ok. Hopefully it will grow for me. The weather is still not ideal tho, but there's nothing that can be done. How is the light situation at your place? This plant really needs a lot of light and heat to do well, esp if it's a matured plant. Put it out in the brightest place. Have you checked the roots? you might also want to have a look at the roots. Been raining too much and the air is very wet. Difficult for substrate to dry, which may cause root rot.

Hi! i am mexican so my english its not good, so i have a question about the balls in your de ground, what's that cause my Alocasia has been only 3 leaf and died but now growing one so i´am so mortified, PLEASE I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME
@WinnieLuthienThye4 жыл бұрын
The balls in the soil are LECA balls (Light Expanded Clay Aggregate) they are actually clay but heated up so they increase in size and becomes very light weighted and more hollow inside. I use it mainly to help make the soil more airy so that water can flow thru easily, wetting the roots and flowing out quickly after the roots get wet. Your alocasia did not die since it is growing a leaf again. When something like that happens to my alocasia (which just happened to my alocasia cuprea) i am guessing I overwatered it and some of the roots rotted away. So now the plant has less roots to support so many leaves. The leaves will turn yellow and die. When more leaves die, it means the plant dont have to feed so many leaves and it gives time for the plant to regrow more roots. Once the roots are regrown and healthy again, then the plant will give you new leaves again. I think that is what your alocasia is doing. Since there is a new leaf now, the plant is good again. Just dont overwater the plant. Or change your soil into a mix that dont keep too much water for long periods of time. I hope this helps.

Hey , I’m afraid to let my Alocasia dry out as I do see them growing near / in streams , ponds or any water area ... am I overwatering them ? Is it necessary for the substrate to dry out once a while ? Thanks.
@WinnieLuthienThye3 жыл бұрын
Hi, they do like water BUT they also root rot easy. Mine gets root rot all the time and I was so fed up, I changed the substrate to pure pumice! Now I can water more, with less danger of root rot. They do like water, but the water has to be full of oxygen so the roots get to breathe. So if you can create moving water, you can soak the pot into the water and they will be fine. I suggest maybe change the substrate to a mix that drains well and have a lot of air pockets ie, maybe chunkier stuff. You can let the substrate dry out once in a while. Feel the leaf, if it feels like tissue, definitely time to water.
