If a strain ( line undergoing testing) confirm with more than the check variety at least about 20 %for field crops and 25% for forest or tree species then only it is permitted to enter the preliminary yield trials

RYT are conducted to check varietal performance with a suitable check with replications, whereas, PYT is conducted to check for different specific characters with replicated trials. Unreplicated trials like contiguous control and moving averages are undertaken by specialized breeders to eliminate undesirable/poor lines, in F3 and F3 onwards
