I feel that people arguing over which is the "true" meaning of the "unnecessary feelings" line really defeats the purpose of the line as a whole. Its about everything. Its about Manfred Von Karma and everything he was ever taught by him, its about Phoenix, its about him not knowing what is correct anymore, and realizing that all he knew and was taught could be wrong. Hes begun to question everything he once thought he was so sure on, and so there really is no "wrong meaning." (Also if you want to interpret it as esgeworth having a potential homosexual crisis alongside all this, thats fine too! At the end of the day, what we can glean from this is that edgeworth is uncertain and maybe even scared from these new thoughts, feelings and questions that Phoenix managed to stir in him. That is all.)

i have kind of a different interpretation from all of these? or rather a mixture of a bunch of them, idk. basically i think the "questioning his methods as a prosecutor and everything mvk taught him which is upsetting because it's something he believed half his life" is very much true, combined with him being reminded of his childhood friendships as you said, *combined* with the fact that thinking about his childhood also meant thinking about what ended that innocence (DL-6) essentially bringing back all his trauma (there is canon proof for this! in rfta, Miles says Phoenix is the man who brought back the worst memory of his life. there aren't many other ways you can interpret that), cOmBiNeD with his job being his main coping mechanism and method of escapism/how he repressed his trauma, so when Phoenix defeated him and broke his perfect record it broke the main way he could keep the ptsd at bay (yea i'm just projecting the time i escaped into my studies from all my issues onto him in this part), COMBINED with the gay interpretation if you really want it (he's avoided all his emotions for so long to protect himself from pain, so the sudden attraction he feels to Phoenix is scary) Phoenix retraumatized the poor guy in like 20 different ways😭

@@kl3321 i'm honestly surprised it's not a more widespread interpretation, i think it makes perfect sense for the character - ever since mvk adopted/started mentoring him, Miles probably never stopped to think about any of his problems or feelings or trauma because he was preoccupied with being the Perfect Von Karma Son/Student™. so that break in the perfect streak is more than a simple loss to him, it's the first time something stops him and goes "hey, your life isn't perfect" and that pause combined with Phoenix being there (who is basically a time capsule from his childhood) is enough for all of his unprocessed feelings - dl-6 itself, missing his friends afterwards, the ways he's changed since then that he probably doesn't like deep down, all of it - to resurface

Honestly, ever since stumbling upon this fandom out of absolutely nowhere and been doing my own fair share of "research" and digging and basically now jumping into the rabbit hole since I manage to finish the whole AA: trilogy game thingy and now trying to contunue with the Edgworth investigation extra before moving to the next Apollo trilogy stuff, every single thing mentioned here is exactly what I thought immediately at once. I'm lowkey an aroace yet still an absolute fanatic about romance in general (expecially gay ships cause I'm biased.) And I just saw how everyone in the fandom collectively agreed that was gay as hell and I agree, but at the same time with all the other implications exactly shared in this video is driving me insane cause of all the other facts that happens but still not a single actual confirmation they're gay/have feelings for one another from the developers is actually going to send me into a whirlpool of existential crisis and me going batshit feral 😭.
