Incredible. Mr Vasary has to be the most underrated pianist of the 20th century. I have been enthralled by his playing since 1970 when I first got into classical music and I have had the privilege of seeing him live in concert three times. Such a shame that he never seemed to get the world-wide recognition he so deserves.

The last Variation always reminds me about Brahms visiting Schumann for the last time

What a sensitive homage to Schumann, much more moving than the Handel variations and Vasary's interpretation is wonderful, exquisite. Schmann saw the score in his asylum and gave a more lucid description of it than many of the "sane" critics ouitside

Vasary gave a concert in Grahamstwon, South Africa, where I was studying music. He liked to go to the simming pool and as he was a fetching young man all the studnenesses flocked around him.Later I heard him playing inLondon. I went backstage to compliment him but when I said I had heard him palying in South Africa and he brushed me aside rudely The fact that I was born in South Africa does not mean that I agreed with the racism practised there and I had become a British citizen.
