Folk dances from all over Turkey!! 🇹🇷
Turkey is divided into 7 geographical regions (bölge). Each of those regions has vibrant local music scenes which, in turn, support a number of regional musical styles. "Hora" is performed in Thrace (Marmara region), "zeybek" in the Aegean Region mostly and not only, "teke" in the Mediterranean Region, "kaşık oyunları" - "karşılama" in Central Anatolia and not only, "horon" in the Black Sea Region, "halay" in Southeast Anatolia Region and "bar" in the Eastern Anatolia Region. These are some of the things that make Turkey unique and beautiful! Let's explore and compare!

Vasilis, this is perfectly said! The Ottoman Empire was a mix of so many cultures and diverse people! Everyone borrowed from everyone and influenced each other. Especially if they were in close proximity to each other and shared a border. Personally as a Bulgarian, I identify alot of the sounds and dances, especially the use of wooden spoons. But I also see the Greek, Armenian, Kurdish and even Assyrian/Persian influences. I think we should just enjoy this cultural music medley and not constantly revert back to history to justify everything. Let's leave the past in the past. Great job again on this video! I watch it everyday for a mood boost! ❤🎉

My grandparent were of Rum origin and they used to listen "Silifke'nin Yogurdu" every day. When they earned a lot of money, they would drink alcohol and have the clarinet and zurna play at the table.They would get drunk and dance with wooden spoons in their hands.They would hit their knees on the ground as if they were playing zeybek. Allah,have mercy on Totori (Theodoros) and Iso(Issos)

its actually completely different from the Pontan Serra dance. the Pontian Serra dance was a war dance. the turkmongols appropriated it to the bastardised amalgamation you know as "horon" (which actually comes from the Greek word for dance, Horo)

Tekeler Köyü Zeybeği is actually from Aydın. It is also known as "Karpuzlu İki Parmak Zeybeği" and you can search, Karpuzlu is a district of Aydın. But you really are great! Also it would be nice to see you play "Ordu/Giresun Karşılaması" (there is just a little difference between them) and "Avşar Zeybeği".

When Anatolian Greeks went to Greece you found their culture "oriental, foreign, and Turkish" just look up how they are treated when they arrived after the population exchange and you'll see that they were considered alien to Greece. You accepted their culture as yours over time but in reality those cultural elements weren't Greek. That was the culture of Anatolia formed with the contribution of its every inhabitant, including Turks.

Oh my God! That Cayda Cira dance with the palm torches! We used to dance that exact same dance in one of my Greek dance groups growing up! It was a dance from Lesbos. Also, some of these dances are identical to Pontian dances

I thought the homeland of Kurds was North Iraq, Southwest Iran, Northeast Syria, Armenia, Northwest Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and West Turkey. I thought Kurds in the Middle East mostly only lived there because I am a dumb American. Is cifteçeli and Maneli a traditional dance to you Kurds? What about Dans Oryental and Dabke? being that you are an Iranic people like the Lurs and Circassians of Russia. Is there no significant Kurdish population in Southwest Russia, you Kurds even have mostly muslims cousins there who are Iranic ethnic groups of Iranic descent from Medieval times or afterwards, in Russia.

I appreciate your work, but I have one minor question: why do you call Turkey in turkish in the vid's title? In your past vids you've used Russia rather than Россия, Greece instead of Ελλάς, Albania instead of Shqipëria, Georgia instead of საქართველო etc.

The countries you mentioned didn't change their name to their native one. Turkey did, 1-2 years ago, to avoid confusion or comparison with turkey the bird. So, I followed this as well.

@4:52 "Ağır govenk" translated as "heavy" or "slow" govenk comes from long tradition of Armenian "gyovnd" dances. The word "govenk" comes from Armenian "gund" (unity, group) and in the Armenian dialect of the region (Sasun, Mush, Baghesh (Bitlis)) becomes "gyond" or "gyovnd". The rythm sounds very close to Armenian dances of the region.

Well because of that it’s kurdish, Govend is Kurdish not Turkish but yes Kurds and Armenians have very similar cultures Cauz we lived very long time in the same land but govend is kurdish word which literally means halay like all kinds of this dances are govend also halay comes from kurdish word which means “ playing,dancing or jumping” and hildan means “to pick up” and the second thing is that “gund “ is also in kurdish means “village”

Gövenk is Turkish name for dances in Far East Turkey. I thought it came from the Kurdish word Govend. My Kurdish friend told me that Govend comes from the Farsi word "Goyende", which means to sing. In the past, when musical instruments had not entered the villages, people would form a circle for halay and take turns chanting each other.

It is logical that all these dances from different regions can have a strong impact from Greek, Armenian, Laz tradition. The funny thing is that it totally gets lost when you look at the list of the titles. The pre view also influences further watching of the dances -you don't see anything Greek or Laz or Armenian. That Anatolian collection had that regional unity and at the same time peculiarity -one could see the mediterranean-balkan elements in the pontic greek dances, caucasian rhythms and elements of dance in the Armenian dances, persian/iraqi in the assyrian.

They are all beautiful and you performed them wonderfully. note; The word Xerzani in 16:15 is Kurdish, Turks say Garzan or Erzen.The letter X and its sound do not exist in Turkish. Muslims and Turks have historically called the Garzan region Erzen-i Ermen (Erzen of Armenia), which is where the name comes from. The same goes for the city of Erzurum, Erzen-i Rum (Erzen of Anatolia/Rum).
