I thought I should bring up the Neanderthal DNA, since you seem so shocked by it. Your Iberian DNA is the source of your Neanderthal DNA. 23andMe talks about this as well. Other proto-humans existed around the same time, including denisova hominin (aka, Denisovans) in Asia, so most people with South Asian DNA have "higher than average" Denisovan DNA. People from the Iberian peninsula are Spanish & Portuguese, but the Neanderthals that merged into that gene pool had a similar MC1R gene variant as Irish and Scottish people, giving them red hair and freckles. However, it's a slightly different gene variant of the same gene, and no modern humans with red hair got it from Neanderthals. However, because of Natural Selection, geneticists think that the gene mutation developed independently in two different parts of the world for the same reason. Though popular culture often portrays Neanderthals as primitive and stupid, they actually had bigger brains than homo sapiens. They also are one of the few great-ape descended proto-humans that had hyoid bones developed properly to give them the ability of speech, just like homo sapiens. They were also more muscular. It's also probably valid to bring up that your Cuban heritage can be tied to your Iberian DNA, since Cuba was a Spanish colony starting in the 16th Century. Most Latino people have Spanish DNA because of the history of conquest.

Carlos, yes this is true. Homo neanderthalensis only existed in Europe (mostly around the Iberian peninsula), so people who have no European ancestors (like Asian people that are not East-Asian, and people who are from Africa originally and never left and never had European ancestors in their line) will have 0% Neanderthal DNA. However, the average European has ~2% DNA, whereas people from the Iberian region (like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc.) will have higher percentage.

Your not really less than 1 percent Cuban, most Cubans are highly admixed with Iberian (Spain, Portugal), Southern Europe score due to the Spain and Italy gene flow some centuries ago, a lot of Cubans with Euro ancestry get a lot of their ancestry from those regions. Some Cubans have native ancestry obviously but not all and a lot of Cubans have African ancestry. Cuba is island of colonial history of people from three various worlds.

I took Ancestry first then 23 & me. The 23 & me test was very different in the European mix (German and British Isles). But 3 weeks later, Ancestry updated their results and recalculated to something very close to what 23 & me had reported. Bottom line, they are learning all of the time and the Ancestry results from 3 yrs ago have gotten better and better. Plus, the results are consistent over time which suggest the test are valid. Just my experience. Also, both 23 & me and Ancestry have correctly matched me with 1st and 2nd cousins that I had not spoken to in years.

The reason I say this is because I recall articles saying most Native American DNA comes from Central and South America rather than the tribes in the United States because the tribes don’t submit their DNA very much so there is very little data to compare. I may be misremembering but that is something I recall reading a few years ago.

*G* Me - the ones that VasseurBeauty is using are autosomal DNA tests. They're the most comprehensive. There are two other types of test available. The Y DNA test can only be taken by males and it traces the person's paternal ancestry (from father to father's father to father's father's father and so on). The mitochondrial DNA test can be taken by males and females and it traces the mother's mother's mother's etc. line. Ancestry possibly has a bigger DNA user database than 23 and me. Where it gets interesting, for the adoptee, is that it tells you which other users share your DNA. You can find close relatives and distant relatives. Most of the time it takes some extra research to figure out how you are related to another user but it could put you straight on the trail of cousins or even siblings. And you can, once you have enough fixed points of how your DNA matches are related to each other, triangulate your position relative to them. Then you are one your way to figuring out where you fit in the family tree that is starting to form. Edit - I've just realised that was not what you were asking! They both do pretty comprehensive ethnicity reports. However, if you do one of these autosomal tests, there is a free site called Gedmatch where you can follow the instructions to upload your results to them and then you can get even more exotic readouts. They have several where your DNA is compared against fossil humans from around the world and across eons of time! They have ancient DNA comparisons also.

I've seen that you were little bit confused regarding your Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, so I'll try to explain it as best as I can. Both of the results were kind of right. The thing is that while migrating from Israel, they passed through Anatolia (Turkey), Balkans, Eastern Europe and Germany. Some of them stayed in those places and some of them continued migrating and searching for better life conditions. So if you sum up the percentages from Balkans, Eastern Europe and Ashkenazi Jewish from 23andme, you'll be close to the 7% that are in Ancestry results. Even though Jewish religion prohibits mixing with other religions and ethnicities, it's obvious that people were always just a people and mixed with whoever their eyes and hearts choose and not what their religious "morals" told them to. So, you can proudly say to your Jewish friends that you are 6-7% Jewish :)

pretty much the only thing you can rely on is if it says you have ancestry in another continent, but the exact percentage of that as well is usually not accurate. I.e. if it says you're 1% African, then you definitely have African ancestry but they have no idea how much, it could be 1% or it could be 10%, if you did the test multiple times each year you'd get different results as their database changes and it's not an exact science

Ancestry always puts the AncestryDNA test kits on sale around all holidays. Shipping & handling is around $15-16. You can get the kits as low as $59. I did the 23andme test years ago and then the Ancestry one a couple of years ago. My results were similar. We forget that people traveled and moved to other countries, even back then. I'm adopted and mixed, so I was happy it showed by genetic backgrounds. It's pretty cool! Plus, I located two sisters on my biological father's side. I'm the family genealogist for both my adopted and biological families. Take the health reports cautiously, as they originally were told by the FDA they couldn't offer them anymore because there was no empirical data. For example, I have a 24% greater risk of developing macular degeneration. After speaking with my retina specialist, he told me based on my history and condition I did not have the greater risk.

That's a really interesting video you made comparing them! I majored in genetics so I've always wanted to get it done but what always stops me is that most of our advances in genetics is thanks to the open-source sharing of data between researchers and countries but these companies take advantage of these open source data to develop their product to then sell the data they collect. Another thing for Americans to consider is that GINA, the American genetic non-discrimination act that protects your genetic data doesn't include life insurances!

For me, as someone who studied biochemistry and doesn't know part of her ancestry/both parents, I'm very interested in the health results. I eventually want to get full tests before I have children but at 26, it's just not practical to go through full genetic counseling and the results might give me something to go off of (i.e., my little brother has celiac's, do I have a mutation that's just not giving me as much trouble, but I'd feel better if I switched up my diet?)

Overall, these companies NEVER give an accurate representation. Please keep this in mind. Humans are all mixed and no ethnic groups are homogeneous. Trying to isolate British genes for example, is like trying to isolate “Canadian” or better yet, “United States” genes. Brits are an amalgamation of Normans, Germanic people, French, Scandinavian, Angles, Saxons, Celts and more. These tests are ok, but I suspect never more than 40% accurate. But what is accurate? There are no pure ancestries.

What I would suggest, when one looks at the differences in those tests is, that the percentages are never completely accurate, but that isn't really important.What one can rely on, is the regions/countries, which all tests taken mention (even with different percentages shown). Those are the ones you really have in your DNA!

I only did Ancestry and they updated my results within a month, and the results were quite different! It was kind of like having two companies analyze my DNA, as not only did the percentages change, but the categories became more specific. Wish I could post pics of the original and follow up, but you can't post pics here. I won't bore you with the details of my ethnicity, but the update was more focused on the middle and north of Europe spanning east and west, than the original, which included some outskirts of Europe (Scandinavia, Caucasus, and Iberia), all which were eliminated in the update. I went from 99.5% European to 100% European! They also focused deeply on my highest percentage, which was Eastern European changed to Eastern Europe and Russia, and zoomed in on DNA from a specific part of Poland, which my dad's parents definitely were from! Sorry if this reply is confusing and wordy. BTW, I got it on sale for $59.99!

Just FYI if you haven't already researched it. Macular degeneration is an eye disease that typically occurs later in life. The next was the breast cancer gene. It's good to know those things and try to do something about it. In my family, my dad's mother got married a second time to a German man. He passed away when my dad was 3. His 3 kids looked for him and his grave and it was found outside the catholic cemetery fence! After my dad passed (he was a "Jr') my aunt told me it was because his last name was Reich. Obviously German. This would be interesting to do, if I ever have a few hundred dollars laying around! Great review!!

BTW, I did AncestryDNA a year ago and just a month ago they updated my profile with new data they now have, and the results were pretty dramatic. Mark Turner Actually, it shows that they are reliable. The more people who supply DNA, the more accurate everyone’s results will get. When it first started, they didn’t know where all DNA came from (they still don’t), which gave regional estimates. As the years went by and more people provided samples, those estimates got narrower to the point where you had more defined results.

I took the ancestry DNA test looking for viking and found none. It took me two weeks to follow up with a rumor that the noblemen of the dark ages told. This is who I am decended from. I've a friend who used to help folk with taking & understanding DNA Tests, building Family Trees, & finding relatives. She told me that: even taking the same test again can yield different results (based upon cells captured in each sample you provide); full syblings can yield different results (not only for the reason just given, but because each sybling inherits only a portion of each parent's respective DNA, so inheritance varies); & different DNA tests can yield different results based upon which snips each company uses & their particular, respective data base & its subsequent comparison groups (much is proprietory & not shared; for, most DNA testing involves a profitible & competitive market rather than a collective, scientific community that pools their knowledge & data & works together). While some science is involved, it's more a developing science mixed with much speculation right now (rather than a well-developed science); so, much of this - especially one's ethnicity estimate - is viewed as "entertainment;" however, DNA testing does undoubtedly point out relative matches up to a point (it's great for determining recent relations). Opinions vary about "trace" results. My friend says 5% or higher (on any given test) she considers significant. You can look deeper into those results & you might find those ethnicity estimates have ranges that can vary from thr given estimate: because the folks giving out these results aren't certain of their estimates (because of the many variables & the limited data available to each competing company). Testing or transferring results with different companies increases your chances of finding relatives because your DNA sample(s) will get compared with different data bases of other DNA samples.

I have been able to trace back to my 4th G-grandparents on both sides. It was neat to see pics of these people, including grave stones & census records. I found one where my Dad was just 1 years old. Berly ashkenazi means european. Mizrachi jews are the ones who have the west Asian/ Semitic genes So, ashkenazi Jewish don’t necessarily look different from other Europeans. The genetic marker for them is different because there was a Jewish migration where they moved toward Europe around 600-800 years ago and there were a decent amount of people in Europe that converted to Judaism. Ashkenazi jews can trace their genes back to around 350 people. I think they married and had kids with those of their own faith so the genetic pool wasn’t all that big. I believe there was a study that shows among ashkenazi Jews they’re all 30th cousins which is why there’s that distinction between ashkenazi Jewish vs a european. Other than that there are plenty that look a very standard european and don’t have that “Jewish” look or mizrachi look

I think I might have an idea on why the Jewish ancestry was so different on each test. Both detected that you had dna from the Iberian peninsula. The European Jewish from Ancestry could have been detecting Separdic Jewish dna (Jews from the Iberian peninsula) 23andme only seems to tell you a about Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, and they are generally from Eastern Europe.

Brittany- I just watched this for the first time. I realize this is 5 years old. Have you relooked at your results? Ancestry periodically updates the results. Over time the number of people involved allows them to improve the accuracy. My results changed from 80% to 99% Ashkenazi Jewish. Ancestry has the largest number of participants so it should be more accurate.

I feel like it wasn't that bad, part of what I'm studying in college is about dna and genetics, and it's so complex that it's hard to be exact when it comes to finding out what parts of your dna come from where on the planet. A lot of parts of the human genome we don't even know what it's for... To manage to find where it comes from you need a huge data base and not all regions have the same amount of dna information. Also people who compare with parents for example can have different results because yes you get 50% dna from a parent but the way it splits doesn't make it an equal split most of the time. Anyway I am amazed to see how far we've come, in the early 2000's I believe it took months and a looot of money to be able to have the first entire human genome to be translated to a database. And now we do dna ancestry tests like it's no big deal haha. I think they ask for too much money for what it is but if you want to spend the money I still think it's pretty cool and shouldn't be taken too seriously, it's not an exact science :)

It is interesting that on both DNA tests you came out as almost half Italian. Were your Cuban ancestors originally of Italian descent??? The reason I ask is that most Cubans are pure 100% European, but their DNA usually shows as mostly Iberian whereas you come out as mostly Italian. Since Spain is close to italy and both Spain and Italy are Mediterranean countries many Spaniards and Latin Americans have some Italian DNA which is actually Spanish DNA mistaken for Italian DNA. However, in your case the Italian ancestry is so high that it certainly indicates recent Italian ancestry.

I use to think in 1700 my Bavarian ancestors were named after popes. Now I know there was an Italian ancestor that left .8% DNA. Probably Canii from either Italy or Switzerland. There was also a Japanese ancester about that time or earlier. They're called ethnicity ESTIMATES for a reason. It's relatively new science, and each testing company has different methods. I first tested in 2012, that ethnicity estimate has changed twice since. I'm on several genealogy sites, and NONE of my predicted ethnicity percentages are exact match. Some vary widely. What we know about our family history is comparatively recent; your DNA reached far back in time. Bottom line? While it's fun, DNA testing is far more helpful for finding those related to you.

With regard to your eyes: the Cuban people are typically a mix of Iberian Spanish and Latino people. Latinos of South America and Central America are a mix of Native American, Europeans and sometimes African even. So that's where you could have Asian features if your mother is Cubano.

Macular degeneration is age-related (old age) loss of vision. It is quite common in Western Europe, especially in blonde, blue-eyed individuals. Onset can be delayed and severity limited by dietary measures, and if you do get it, there are treatment possibilities and by the time you get it, there will most likely be even better treatment possibilities.

Brittany. Download your dna details from ancestry or 23 and me (either one) and upload them to familytreedna for analysis. There is a small cost to do so. I suspect that your dna will show that your jewish ancestry is in fact Sephardic jewish (jews from spain or portugal). If you can then find your Sephardic ancestor you can apply for Spanish or Portuguese citizenship depending on where3 your ancestor came from. This offer is being made to Sephardic descendents because of recognition that the Inquisition deprived many Sephardic families of their citizenship.

Your Cuban ancestry is probably reflected in the Iberian Peninsula percentages and also, maybe those Iberian ancestors could've been Sephardic Jewish... I don't know, just guessing!

The reason why it’s different is because they were able to look further into it on 23 and me and then ancestry. That’s why it affected the rest of the bigger regions.

I recently did mine through 23andMe and was also quite surprised. I’ve since uploaded my raw data to a few other sites (for free) and the results make a little more sense. Most surprising, it’s very possible my mother’s father, who I searched for for decades and finally found, may not be her father after all. He’s Lebanese and I’m still trying to figure out exactly how that would register on these tests. (Any insights are appreciated!) The health section pointed out something life changing, however, and I have 88% less Neanderthal than the other 23andMe clients.

I did both tests as well, just for fun!!! I knew where I cam from directly (Northern Ireland/ Derry) Because I was born there and so were my parents, G-prs, and GG-gps But you never know further back, turns out I am over 80% Irish, and little British and then Scandinavian (Finland they believe) which made sense since I am a ginger with blue eyes. As I said in my trace regions there were slight differences but nothing significant. Just go through results carefully and you might notice when you add up the percentages, they are more similar than you think. The bit of African you had showing up I thought was super cool!!! Most of these that you watch a caucasian person comes back as 100% European like I did, but the fact that you were only 97% was cool. Having a touch of something else is so brilliant!!! :) 🌍

I'm a clinical psychologist very familiar with statistical research. Okay, the problem with these DNA tests is they are promoted as ways to reveal information beyond their capacity to provide it. These DNA tests are based on statistical probability of you matching a particular DNA profile from a particular region of the world. The problem is that for most regions of the world there are not enough people in the data base to develop a good comparison. The biggest DNA data bases are from North America and Western Europe. But outside of that the data bases are relatively small. That's why a black person who clearly has African DNA will do one of these tests and the results will not pickup on that DNA at all and will say they are European, because the European data bases are so large. (There's actually a hilarious video of a young black woman in a near state of shock because her test results say she is basically white, when clearly she is not.) So, take your results with a grain of salt, so to speak especially when the percentages get very low.

So technically no one is ethnically Caribbean/Mexican/etc. The populations in those regions are primarily comprised of Native American, East Asian (read: pre-migration Native American), East Indian, European-especially Spanish/Portuguese, and African. Additionally, people from Argentina can expect to have German ancestry, and Brazilians have a higher likelihood of having more direct East Asian ancestry like Japanese or Chinese.

Nicole Robinson I agree to an extent. I think they’re definitely the sort of “true” Caribbean, Americans since they inhabited the areas first. Genetically, the ones from parts of North America and the arctic are thought to be due to a more recent migration which may be why they can look more East Asian while others seem more closely related to Pacific Islanders/Polynesians I think within science, like with ancestry East Asian and Native American are still bunched together because there still is that similarity I think

Yeah I'm less than half Southern Italian (fraction Northern) and people guess that I'm Persian sometimes. Southern Italians are dark and Middle Eastern-esque almost always. I've seen a lot of Italian faces, and she doesn't look like us at all.
