The Netflix show on this is really quite good. In one of the episodes, a childhood friend of Emmanuela indicates that Emmanuela had come to her and confided in her that "someone very close to the Pope" had "bothered" her in the gardens inside the Vatican, meaning had either molested her or made some sort of sexual advances toward her and it disturbed and terrified her and she was afraid to tell anyone because she knew no one would believe her. In all likelihood this is what happened: most likely, someone like she described had noticed her and took an interest. Emmanuela was a beautiful little girl, quite enticing to a perverted man that had such tendencies. Usually, this is typically how something like this happens: the perpetrator targets the person and plans something in advance, an approach. After all, he has to try to figure out a scenario where he's not likely to be caught and he has the optimum privacy and cover to attempt his deeds. It probably was one of the priests (like was suggested) and he probably figured out the times when Emanuela would go to the garden and he waited for the right opportunity to encounter the young girl. Who knows what he did to her? It doesn't matter. He preyed upon her and then, when he realized that it would get out the scandal would be too horrific, and so they very likely made arrangements with the mafia, who had dealings with the Vatican in those times and probably until today, and they arranged to have her killed and in all likelihood dumped her body somewhere. In the Netflix special they talk about a number of different theories that were investigated and have been perpetuated but in all likelihood this was a simple matter of a man molesting a young girl, a man in a high position that could bring shame and Scandal upon his position and to the church, and so he used his influence and position to get rid of her and to this day they remain silent on the matter. Most of the people that could have been involved or were directly guilty are either so old they're about to die or they already have. The various theories are all smokescreens or diversions from the real truth.

Yes, this was one of the many reasons in the beginning to stop believing and turn away. My Nana was hurt by the nuns they called her a bastard and hit her hands until she was bleeding a lot. No he must not feel guilty. Either a creep got her, then it was unfortunate that she would talk and meet with strangers. There is no helicopter parenting and endless taxi services in Europe but the kids and teenagers are told to not go with strangers. On the other hand if the mob observed her or even had a car with a licence plate by the Vatican - she would have needed 24/7 security. Her brother chaperoning her from time to time would not have kept her safe. Unfortunately, this documentary highlights every reason I (and many others) have for a complete lack of trust I have in the Catholic Church. I know there are good people out there but as a whole, the church is fundamentally flawed. The secrecy, the lies and the backhandedness must stop if people are ever to trust the church again.
