In a second memory, Vaughan shares about the opening of our site and how we shifted our focus towards a family preservation and strengthening approach.
Audio Transcript: The move down to our new site in Lower Crossroads in 2004/2005 was a very significant event. Not only did it help us to have our own space that was purpose built for us, but also it helped us to think more carefully about family. And about what children needed from family. Our Child Youth Care Centre began to provide more family-style care and also, we started to put more effort into our reunification. By 2008, most of our children in the Muizenberg home had been reunified, and by 2015, most of the children in Crossroads had been either reunified with family or placed into foster care. This allowed us to start experimenting and working with the family preservation approach. How do we support families in crisis? How do we keep families together that have been through difficult times and are vulnerable? And really to focus on family preservation as a key approach alongside our education and HIV clinic approaches.
