My current headcanon is that the Fall of Shady Sands coincides with the Brotherhood of Steel raid that destroyed the NCR's gold reserves and crashed the currency. There may have been enough collateral damage from that raid that they moved the capital to another city.

The Brotherhood and the survivors of Shady Sands used a lot of Catholic traditions in their rituals. During the Shady Sands ceremony, the group "cover themselves" with the ashes of Shady Sands and smear the ash on the forehead as Catholics would do for Ash Wednesday. Then they would drink the symbolic blood like in Mass where wine is drank. In Fallout's version it looked like red colored syrup. Then there is Lee Moldaver their Flame Mother (Messiah) who will bring salvation to the NCR and the waste. Now that Moldaver is dead after the battle of the Griffith Observatory would turn her into a martyr and we may see NCR soldiers march into battle for the Republic and in the name of their Messiah (like Constantine the Great who unified the empire and in the name of the one true God). FYI the Observatory and the large park it sits on have a very colorful past

My reading of the overseer’s cutting Lucy’s bonds was not sexual, although I now can understand why it may be interpreted that way. This could be biased due to my being a white male, but my read was that the scene was showcasing how physically weak the overseer is, and that despite his position of power he would not be well adapted in different environments. And, although clearly having undergone some type of explanation, he is not a Super Mutant. In fact, Birdie’s apparent frustration with how long the overseer took led me to question how much power the overseer actually had as opposed to being more of a symbolic figurehead.

Something that always bothered me about the chalkboard controversy is the simple answer is the person in the Vault got the date wrong. Why should we expect people to have the date right after a nuclear war? So let's say the show just made a mistake. The show is more faithful and respectful to everything about Fallout than Bethesda has ever been. It was like portions of the fanbase were just determined the show couldn't be as good as it was.

36:40 They absolutely give Lucy incredibly strong motivation and emotional incentives to mistrust them by withholding information. For people who take in outsiders regularly they have extremely low emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity around outsiders and other vaults. Their keeping Lucy hanging on very, very sensitive questions essentially forces her to mistrust them. There is literally no reason for them to not explain to anyone what's on lvl12. That place should be framed as a solemn place of rememberance and proactively explained as inactive, but technically delicate, so you should not go there on your own. Framing horrifying places and times for outsiders is an incredibly important part for any society that has a culture of rememberance regarding past traumatic events. Just suppressing such stuff only makes you look guilty. Similarly, tossing outsiders into a religious ritual without so much as explaining what is going to happen or why is very likely to overwhelm them. Anyone who has a ritual that includes undressing, the symbolical ingestion of blood and ashes really ought to ensure everyone is on bord with this beforehand. Again, they have absolutely had the correct structures in place that should have explained all of that. And they only condescended, ignored questions, failed to clarify things that might look weird etc. They basically engineered suspicion against themselves. It's a miracle people don't run screaming from that place all the time. It reeks of trap.
@manofwarb
@manofwarb 4 ай бұрын
To clarify: The ban on exploring level 12 wasn't due to the dwellers wanting to hide the experiment, rather the existence of that level is a sore sensitive topic for the original dwellers - one that they'd rather not talk about, since it dredges up past traumas for them. From their perspective, Lucy's questioning them about level 12 time and again is similar to a guest visiting your house for the first time, inquiring as to why they can't be shown the bedroom where a terminally ill family member is sleeping! Sure, the guest's curiosity and paranoia would be sated if they explain the situation, but the onus shouldn't be on you to share sensitive hurtful matters with a new acquaintance. If someone in Vault 33 said, "Lucy, please don't go into the left auxiliary bedroom; it's a private matter" She'd have listened and respected their privacy. But because it's Vault 4, the vault full of human aquatic hybrids, they don't rate this decency?

Cultural relativism - such a great topic as Fallout plays with this notion over and over in the games. The TV show really brings it to the 4-front with Vault 4. What do any of us really consider good or bad (moral relativism) we haven't been taught to believe? Most of the time that teaching comes from the social group we grew up in - and guess what - they all have different ideas!? The episode really laid on the creepy vibe with Vault 4 and I was ready to believe that Lucy and Max were about to become Gulper-fodder on Level 12, it turns out though that they were really nice people just trying to get things off their chests (like clothes) and smear some intoxicants and burnt offerings over themselves...all pretty innocent! Communism will be a great topic and I'm really keen to see your take on it. The perspective seen as held by many Americans (maybe it's just the propaganda - there's a topic, propaganda) is that they fear and hate Communism in equal measure. The Cold War really created this to a degree not seen elsewhere in the world. So have at it! I'll be there to chime in with an overly long comment. :) Good to see the NAS is up and running, love me some technology - glad you've got what you need.

The Vault 4 episode was my favorite one!! It was a really powerful message about having the ability to correct the wrongs we see. Also, I loved seeing a different side of Maximus when he was in a "safe" environment. It was adorable to watch him discover and enjoy things. I never thought that there was a reason for intercutting the communist meetings with the Vault 4 scenes other than just plainly driving the plot. Makes a lot of sense to compare them both here. On a personal note... ngl you got me emotional in the end there. I think I have "judgment burnout" with trying to keep myself safe online and irl. You're right that the natural response is not to trust someone but I always WANT to trust if that makes sense, and that's so tricky to balance. It ALWAYS makes me feel like a gigantic a-hole. You saying that it's part of the human experience to judge was somewhat freeing for me. I'm going to keep that in mind for a long time. Thanks as always, Lindsay. It's always worth my time to watch your work.

The welcome sign to Shady Sands said the first capital of the NCR. They would not put "First" unless it was still a fully functional city. So something happened to Shady Sandy pre-2277 that caused the capital to be moved somewhere else but it was still there. Yes I think the blackboard was a mistake. Someone drew an arrow where it was not suppose to be or someone forgot to put the date when it was nuked.

In vault 4, power is given, not taken. A lesson maximus has spent some time reflecting on. My current headcannon is that 2277 was when brahmin barons came into power in the NCR, turning the country towards expansion Caviar tastes like the ocean. Maximus had oysters which have a very mild seafood flavor, but are more valued for their mucassy texture and supposed value as an aphrodisiac. Tuna does not taste especially like oysters imo, but both cans are common and I invite you to try them

I think becasue it kind of reversed the whole creepy cult that's not actually evil and are surprisingly nice, but just problems with cultural relativism and all that. I have no idea when any of these are supposed to take place at all. I just like the two lead characters and the ghoul. the main two being sweethearts of people and the Ghoul...he's just comes off as cynical but kind of cool and I see some good in him as a part of that lone cynical gunman type that maybe has a little bit of something in there.

Thus anything we don't like in the series can be disregarded as "it's not canon".

Communism is very different from Soviet or Chinese communism. In fact the idealistic nature of communism calls for the state to "wither away" because people won't need them once they get used to sharing resources. Except that we're selfish s%$#ts and it just doesn't work. Sure real communism is more altruistic but it's impossible to implement (at least with humans). I was taught all this in college in the 80s but when people hear the word now, they are thinking mostly of the Soviet Union. If a former game show host got elected US president and turned it into a dictatorship and called it democracy, at some point in the future, that might be what people thought of when they heard "DEMOCRACY". And that is hard for a word like communism to get around. People say the same thing about TOS Star Trek's Federation (that it is too altruistic to really exist) which is why the current rights holders have thoroughly tried to destroy the very idea that the Federation is a working system.

Hello. Since my own channel somehow evolved over time into me describing the esoteric meaning behind media, I think I can explain some of the symbolism behind the Vault 4 ritual. I don't have access to streaming media so I am going off the images and your description of the ritual rather than the scene itself, but there's enough information for me to explain at least some of the symbolic language used by the ritual. If there's more information that you think would bring greater clarity to the description, please let me know. First, as you likely already know, communal rituals are designed to provide a feeling of membership within a group by reinforcing the symbolism core to the ideological core of the group. This is true for both the Vault 4 and communist book club scenes. Each ritual's setting, script, symbolic tools, and lecture is centered around the core beliefs of the group or in the case of the Vault 4 ritual, subgroup as the ritual is described to apply primarily to the outsiders who weren't added to Vault's population recently enough to be considered truly native. The Vault 4 ritual is recreation of an animistic fertility ritual. Animism is the earliest and longest held form of spiritual belief that centers on the belief of the abstract lifeforce and spiritual nature of the world without personifying that belief into concrete symbols such as gods or detailed mythological narrative. The use of this more generalized form of worship was likely a deliberate choice to avoid contradicting any prior beliefs held by recent citizens of the Vault. The centering of the ritual around the concept of fertility is important that even with the Vault's technological assets, food production is critical in the apocalyptic environment of the Wasteland. Despite the technological environments they live in, the Vault dwellers exist with a tight tribal structure that by necessity must be self-sufficient. By reinforcing that food production requires a communal effort that isn't always clean or sterile but is necessary, the ritual and attached systems of belief mentally and emotionally prepare the celebrants for those tasks. I would hazard a guess first generation former wastelanders of that society are primarily focused in the general labor and security positions in the Vault due to less technical skill requirements of those roles and the ritual reinforces the importance of those roles within the Vault 4 society. Now the symbols. Two of the most basic symbols in animastic rituals are fire and blood as the symbolic representatives of lifeforce. Blood of course the simplest and easiest to understand symbol of biological lifeforce. It is literally the medium that sustains life and retains this symbolical connection to lifeforce to this day. Just look at the symbolism it retains in vampiric fiction and esoteric practices. "The blood is the life". The sharing of a chalice of blood or fluid such as milk, ergot laced fermented wheat infusions or grape juice, is symbolic of joining the celebrants into a shared link of life force, to be symbolic blood siblings. Fire is the symbol of humanity's first manifestation of mastery over their environment and the power generated by fire is the core of human civilization. From fashioning fire-hardened ends on the end of sticks to form better spears, to the heat-based nuclear reactions fueling nuclear power - including fusion - the generation of combustion is the core of human temporal power. While this is best embodied in ritual in large open fires one could dance around, candles serve as a more indoor friendly substitute. In addition, each person individually bringing a candle to then lay on a communal altar together also reinforces the communal link. The light within one individual added to the tribe to provide greater collective illumination. Linking the blood and fire represents the fusion of immaterial spiritual (blood) and material mastery of humanity (fire) merging together to provide the power the tribe need to survive. While it's being used for fertility ritual here, the symbolism is easily converted into battle rituals to prepare the tribe for conflict. As for the other symbols, the fruits and vegetable on the altar are representative of the fruits of the earth. The fertility of the earth is nurtured by blood - or more accurately decaying biological material - and the fires of the sun. This symbolism reinforces the fruits of the tribe's labors being manifested. Both literally as the fruits of the fields, and metaphorically the greater rewards communal as opposed to individual efforts can provide them all. Breasts of course represent maternal fertility as their primary purpose is to provide milk for infants. This is why breasts are so prominent on the sacred images of feminine fertility deities. More than that, including the nature of Bernie's speech, I can't comment on as I don't have any more information. I do hope the information I provided was helpful for you. While making an episode based on ritual would be interesting, I don't have access to the primary source material and my own production schedule is pretty full. As an aside, I also researched Teal Swan and came to similar conclusion you did: "mostly harmless". I don't think Bernie is a direct homage to Ms. Swan but both she and the character draw off the same archetype for their persona.

Caviar, in my experience, mostly just tastes salty, a bit saline, and it's the kind of thing you eat more for the texture (sort of slippery, if you've had roe it is this but larger) than the taste. The first and last time I ate caviar, I was twelve or so meeting my brother-in-law's parents, who are former soviet citizens. I tried a little bit on bread, and decided I was very fond of it, so I put a whole heap of it on. I was less fond of it. Caviar is best enjoyed in small quantities.

The Courier did inadvertently wipe out an entire community with a nuke and I haven't seen anyone say Lonesome Road wasn't canon. The chalkboard situation is most likely some communication error as well as a double check, make sure everything works, issue. I think it's essentially what you said but layered on top of this weird ego thing BGS seems to have over FO:NV (and now Fallout London). They don't bad mouth NV but they have been very quiet about it. I get the feeling of just ignoring it because they don't want to do the self examination that comparison would require. SOOO my guess is that BGS probably only provided lore documents from Fallout 3, 4, and 76. Which is fine. I got over the lore inconsistencies by just moving Fallout into the comic book category of my brain. World 1 is FO 1, 2, NV World 2 is the Interplay Desperation Games World 3 is FO 3, 4, 76, and Show

No, exploring the forbidden level is the fact that they were mousetrapped into the vault AND almost everyone in Fallout has some horrible secret you need to know. Go look up Andale from Fallout 3. Really you NEED to know about those dark secrets. I'd venture to say that there IS no peaceful settlement without a horrible secret in all of Fallout 3, 4, and NV. There are messy settlements (Megaton for instance) with apparent problems, but all the ones that really seem like they "have it together" are all monsters.

My best shot at explaining 2277, albeit as a complete head canon. If you want to get ideological about it, you could make up an excuse for "The fall of shady sands" given that this is a heavily pro-moldaver faction in vault 4, and president Kimball is running for relection for his second term in New Vegas. Soldiers in NV wouldn't take about it, because he's just their president and they don't have the ideological inclinations. But Moldaverites would *hate* Kimball. He's in hoc to the Brahmin Barons and is simply repeating the mistakes of the old USA, alongside expansionist policies in pursuit of resources and genocides against groups like the Khans. He's a corporatist through and through. The temptation not to merely blame an outside threat for the destruction of shady sands, but to ascribe it to an internal moral failing which they brought on themselves, is both a human response ("please let it be something we've done. Nothing is scarier than history happening to me and me being a victim of it rather than an agent".), and a cults wet dream in terms of control over adherents. The "Fall of shady sands" could be read as the election of President Kimball and the resurgence of the ideology which Moldaver has spent the first season criticizing, especially if there's a reframing of the NCR in ideological terms to divorce it from the Kimball era and the brahmin barons. The NCR "Fell" when it elected someone who was "Against our (Revisionist) values, and that society was destroyed in nuclear fire shortly after, just like the last time those values held sway and led to constant rapacious expansionism, capitalism, and war". This also has the benefit of reframing the pre-Kimball NCR in ideological terms which suit the Moldaverites and utilizing its successes as proof of their ideology working, before claiming the collapse of that society was due to its moral corruption from within. Again, golden material for a cult to utilize control and weaponize guilt of the survivors. If you want to dig into it, the "Fall" could be extremely religious in connotation in the same way as it is in Judeo-Christian mythology. More charitably, the same framing can be used for legitimately believed reasons. While the nuking of Shady Sands was down to one asshole with a grudge, it's also possible that the mentality he represents is something Moldaver and those in the know genuinely believe was mirrored in Kimball and is the inevitable endpoint of that ideology, and they want to stamp it out, even if that means telling a lie to people that "You went seeking war and profit, and this was your reward for that sin".

So many say "when has socialism ever worked?" The military. And within many if not most corporations. The Soviet Union and China were arguably a horizontally and vertically integrated corporate structure integrated with the government and the military-industrial complex. That's why Russia could tun over formerly state-owned corporations to oligarchs, and China could do IPOs with theirs.

I wouldn't say that Communism is the reason why a few Russians became oligarchs and a few government run corpps in China had IPOs - rather it was because the corrupt guys in the Party could game the system, and no one even wanted to hold them accountable due to the influence they'd accrued. That is the problem with any form of single party rule, be it a right wing military or a left wing party - that organization's higher ranks eventually becomes a self serving aristocracy.

This Video inspires me to speak up about that Short hair your avatar has. (please be patient and understanding with me, I would never intentionally attack another's way of life, I just want to be heard): It repulses me, to an extreme. Like worms under the skin. I am repulsed by all things masculine. Masculinity is male, And the world is so much worse for their presence. These Are More feelings then facts.. Tho... well anyways, What i mean to say is I don't ever see a future in were I could change on this stance, even tho I'm otherwise such a accommodating and open minded person. Everyone can have their faults, But when a man Has some... its (more often the not) far worse, far more ugly then a woman's faults. Its not you or your way of life that bothers me, But the idea that you would associate with men, put value on masculine things. Needless to say I have ALOT of trauma that colors my opinions, I know this, But even with my open, wise and aged mind I cannot feel any different. If I cant... What hope is there for others. I am likely in the upper 20% in my ability to understand and perceive my surroundings effectively, with coping skills that has to be in the top 30%... It is why I say that a persons childhood is such a vital part of the puzzle. It is what makes us who we are, We cannot run from it, We can only try and shape it, But its base form will always be predetermined. Society NEEDS to be better, So cases like me don't happen. For the sake of brevity I had to be egotistical, I hope you understand. Thank you for your time. I hope this helps in someway.

This comment is… well I just don’t think my proper response can be put in words. But I guess, thank you for providing support for my recent statement that I’m far more triggered by people misunderstanding me than just not liking me or what I have to say. You don’t appear to have misunderstood me but your honesty and directness was a bit… excessive? 😂 Not triggering, but still… wow. I applaud your self awareness but telling a traumatized genderqueer person you find their masculinity repulsive… I mean just don’t expect other people to take something like that as well as I just did. 😂

@@lindsaysfallout As I mentioned, Would never otherwise make such a statement, I know that my thoughts come from a unhealthy toxic place. Your video generally talks about a deep understanding that can only come from communication. I love that! You had alot of great things to say, Ive since watched your Maximus Video and realy enjoyed that one too. It is NOT My intention at all to delegitimize you! Infact we seem similar in alot of ways. I am just on the opposite side of that spectrum. My existence however is alot less legitimate then yours. I.. left out an otherwise crucial bit of my backstory... I am a cis male... This is a fact that deeply disturbes me. I REALY don't like mentioning it online as this is my safespace, A place to live and be whatever I want to be. So i use a Voice changer, and inbody a modicum of the woman I desire to be(Mainly through Video games). What keeps me in this unhealthy space(instead of transitioning) is ultimately my extreme Vanity, Just in the ideal that i can never meet. I want to be truly lusted after, to be used and abused by men just wanting me for my looks, To birth a child, To breast feed that child, To be a true mother. Ive dealt with these feelings for over 20 years now, I understand that this a caused me to fester out of control. At the end of the day, I much as i want to be a good healthy person, I have this ingrained need to fit in, likely beaten into me by my life in the extremely abusive US child healthcare system...atleast that's how it used to be, hopefully it is better now. All this is to say that I deeply understand wanting to be something you weren't born as, And hole hardly support people in transition. It is better to be alive and suffering then dead and forgotten. It is not a path that will save me, so I do my only alternative... But this road is a very lonely one, were i am often ostracized from every community, understandably so as I don't have what it takes to be trans, but also obviously cant fit in with the norms. I live a paradoxical existence, Were I want nothing but to fit in, But don't fit into anywhere. This is the end of my self indulgent rambling. My hope is that one day, My suffering will be better understood and heard by the world at large. I also hope that this better conveys that I in no way meant you any disrespect.

If you are going to teach someone Communism, and I do look forward to your attempt, may I recommend starting at the Linguistic Stage. In this case you are going to need to explain the meaning of the word community and the purpose of the suffix -ism, and go from there. This is due to the number of people whom have heard the word as an insult far too often to realize it has a real meaning behind it. Systems that promote the growth of Common People.

It figures that your low view count correlates with actually having something good to say. Your Video isn't very marketable, It isn't engagement bait... Its quality, so there for it goes in the youtube toilet. I get so disgusted with how capitalism is currently being ran. Exploitation is the name of the game.

Aww I appreciate that. I’m not totally convinced I’m anti algorithm yet, sometimes these things just take time or some event triggers thing. For example my season 6 big mouth video had like 2k views until season 7 came out… now it’s at like 100,000. It would track if this channel blew up on season 2.

The reason not to have a date on the chalk-board is a horrible one: Setting up an Unreliable Narrator. For you are correct, any in-character being would have dated it as the rest.... Thus we have to conclude it was a Narration choice that makes it unreliable. Personally, I think it was something even a little worse: They are leaving open the door to re-writing the whole of Las Vegas. It feels like there is distaste between Bethesda and anyone who came prior to them.

Anything claiming Bethesda is out to destroy anything New Vegas related is a conspiracy theory based in absolutely nothing besides people's hate boners for Bethesda and New Vegas fans being annoying. I love New Vegas and don't really like Bethesda as a company either before you call me a fanboy, I just like making sure there's actual proof of shit like that before declaring it
