Vault construction technique.

Thank you Mahesh ji for nice video. Just wondering if I can learn basics of this technology. I have made my house with mud and stone and I wanted very much to include vaults, but I had no idea. Now I am planning to built a house in my village with vaults. Is there any way I can learn it?

1. Is it cheaper than using modern mat like cement , steel ? 2. what is the labour cost per sq foot for residential building ? 3. What is used as mortar for constructing the walls ? cement or lime? 4. With what you replace the lintel ? arch? 5. You do only roof or entire building? Does labour cost per sq foot include the wall making or only roof?

1. Ideally it should be cheaper, but due to challanges in procurement of material and skilled labour- cost goes higher. I am seeing continous reduction in cost since I started practicing on AVD. I hope to see it cheaper that RCC with involvement of more number of technocrats. With hybrid solution it can be managed near RCC cost- as of today also. 2. Depends! If we follow ancient methods goes for pure compression structure with Natural hydraulic lime- it may be 1000 to 1200 Rs/sqft. With hybrid solution it can be 500 Rs/sqtf. 3. Natural hydraulic lime. Do not use pure/ fat lime. 4. Yes Lintel replaced with arches.

Wall thickness 350mm. I will confirm brick size used for this vault (which is smaller than regular brick), but we have constructed vault with regular bricks as well... it works well.

Preferably load should be transferred using wall and buttress only (gravity design). But if due to space constraint, buttress or gravity design possibility does not exist then the springer beam required to resist the horizontal thrust.

Hydraulic lime + Surkhi + Sand without any biological additives. Cement mortar is typically not sticky and hence can't be used for construction without centering support.

In residential projects we have designed span upto 9m. But larger span are also feasible.

@@omsanthiomshakthi9793 9 m is vault spanning direction, another direction can be as long as you need (like upto 100m).
