The deathclaws were mutated in a vault, actually. They are insanely mutated Jackson’s Chameleons.

@@haleyspapa the lore said they were made by the is military to replace combat dogs and that they were comprised of many reptiles with the Jackson chameleon being the primary source then after the bombs fell the radiation caused them to grow larger it wasn't until the master from fo1 used Fev on them that they became the death claws we see throughout the fo1,fo2,fo3 and I believe the death claw in fo4 is a naturally occurring version given the extreme differences between east coast and west coast death claws

After a decade long war for resources waged between China and the United States, American forces were making significant headway into China when the Chinese launched several nuclear strikes against American cities on October 23, 2077. America responded in kind, and the nuclear fallout enveloped the world. A company called Vault-Tec built shelters to survive the nuclear armageddon that had been theorized about for years before the bombs dropped. Most of these vaults had... sinister agendas that only the Vault-Tec higher ups knew about. Mist games, and indeed the show, are their own self contained stories taking places centuries after Earth became a nuclear wasteland. We've only seen what's happened in the American wastelands; personally, I hope we get a setting in Europe or Asia at some point.

Fun fact. "Normal" Deathclaws have the intelligence of a chimp and can set traps. Bethesda also seems to be leaving the possibility of intelligent deathclaws open- Avalon's statement they all died out has been decanonized, and one appears in Shelter.
