. Variable air volume system or VAV system is most commonly used in modern buildings HVAC system. In the VAV System volume of the supplied is varied to meet the thermal load demands while the temperature of the supplied air is kept constant. While the CAV system is opposite where air volume is constant while the temperature is varied as per the demand. VAV system allows individual temperature control for different zones supplied by the same AHU. VAV system is also energy efficient compared to the CAV system. In a VAV system, a VAV box or VAV terminal unit is installed in each zone/room above the ceiling. This VAV box controls the amount of airflow supplied to the zone based on the zone thermal load. A thermostat or wall module senses the zone temperature and in turn controls the VAV damper. A VAV controller(DDC controller) with a built-in motorized actuator is directly mounted on the damper which controls the damper opening and closing.
There are two types of VAV boxes:
Pressure dependent VAV and Pressure independent VAV. We discussed the difference between pressure-dependent VAV and pressure independent VAV in this video.

Hi sir, please correct me if I was mistaken. The only difference between P independent & P dependent system was the control response of the damper. In P independent, the temperature of the another zone was based on inlet air flow rate rate, not on thermostat feedback whilst in P dependent system, tempt of another zone is only based on thermostat feedback.
@TechSystems
@TechSystems 3 жыл бұрын
Hi yes you are right in P independent system we monitor the airflow to the room and maintain it between minimum and maximum setpoint (based on the required room temp). So system pressure changes doesn't effect the airflow to the room. While in P dependent system airflow to the room is effected by change in system pressure. Hope you get the answer.

Are the AHU and VAVs working together in conjunction based on the BAS sequencing?
@TechSystems
@TechSystems 3 жыл бұрын
Yes VAVs are usually controlled by unitary controllers or thermostat based on the zone tempeture setpoint. With opening and closing of VAV damper air pressure changes in the supply duct. This change in pressure is sensed and AHU Fan VFD Speed is modulated accordingly. Hope I answered your query.

Hi sir , I have many spaces so I will have many vav boxes, the question is in the return duct . Does I return air from every space? Another one, if one of 3 spaces is working ,so the return air will come back from work and not work spaces, in this case dose I install motorized damper at each space on return duct to I endure the return air will come back from working space only ?
@TechSystems
@TechSystems 2 жыл бұрын
It depends what type of application you have, if it is an office or hall then taking return air from the unoccupied space will not be an issue, the space pressure will become slightly with respect to corridor. But if the space is isolation room, operation room or laboratory where accurate pressure control is required then return air motorized damper shall be provided to control and maintain the pressure setpoint.

I want to know what is role of a VSD-driven fan in both PDVAV system and PIVAV system? Will the fan decrease its speed before or after the damper in the other room react with the cooling load demand reduces in one of the room?
@TechSystems
@TechSystems Жыл бұрын
Hi Leo, When cooling demand decreases in the occupied areas, VAV dampers move towards close position accordingly, resulting in an increase of static pressure in the supply air duct. This increase is detected by the controller through a pressure transmitter installed in the duct. As a result the controller reduces the speed of the fan VFD to keep the pressure at the setpoint.
@lkhplus
@lkhplus Жыл бұрын
@@TechSystems So it would be the fan react before the damper in the room(s) other than the occupied room which trigger the increase in the system static pressure? In other words, should the sequence be: 1. Damper in, say, room 1, moves towards close position 2. Increase in system static pressure detected 3. Fan speed decreases And should the reaction of the dampers servicing the room(s) other than room 1, be placed in the sequence between 1 and 2, or 2 and 3, or else, as said in the video?

Hi sir, I could not find the much difference in pressure Independent and pressure depend VAVs, both are working as per temperature set point then how its related to pressure? Let me knwo the answer. And your videos are very good and watching all your videos.
@TechSystems
@TechSystems 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, Both are working based on the temperature setpoint. In Pressure independent VAV air flow is measured and air flow is maintained in the room (between minimum and maximum limit) as per the temperature requirement. If there is any change in Duct pressure, air flow through VAV changes which is detected by controller and it immediately takes action to bring the flow to setpoint value. Meaning airflow to the room is independent of the change in duct pressure. While in Pressure dependent system, change in duct pressure effects the airflow to the room and no action to maintain this flow. Damper is only controlled based on the temperature setpoint. Hope you get the answer.

A static pressure sensor is installed at the end or 2/3 length of the supply duct to control speed of the AHU supply fan in both types of VAVs.

Hi Zeeshan in this video I explained both type of VAVs and their components. A VAV is usually controlled by a VAV controller (which has a built in damper actuator) to control the damper. A wall module or thermostat is also connected to the VAV controller which provides room temperature and setpoint value. Pressure independent VAV System have additional air flow sensor to provide air flow value.

@TechSystems
@TechSystems 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, In pressure independent VAV a flow station is used to measure the flow through the VAV. If there is any change in duct static pressure, flow through the VAV box changes which is detected by the controller and controller immediately takes the action to maintain the flow setpoint(desired flow) through the VAV box. As immediately corrective action is taken and VAV flow came back to the desired value that's why this system is independent to the duct pressure. Hope I answered your question.

What is difference between FCUs and VAVs? Why we use FCUs in buildings when we can use Vavs?
@TechSystems
@TechSystems 3 жыл бұрын
FCU is complete standalone unit containing the fan, cooling coil and/or heating coil which is controlled using a thermostat. You can think of FCU similar to the split or window AC being used in residential building. While VAV box is distribution unit to control air flow in zones as per cooling requirement, air is conditioned inside an AHU behind the VAV boxes.
@TechSystems
@TechSystems 3 жыл бұрын
To use VAVs we need an AHU which is connected to the VAVs through ducts which has more initial and maintenance cost. While an FCU can be directly installed in the area being served which costs less. So FCUs are usually used for small zone like offices.
