Edit: Hi all! I’ve noticed recently this video has been gaining some traction. Please keep in mind that this is one of the earlier videos on my channel, and is nearly 2 years old now, so my wardrobe has changed a lot! When I filmed this I had basically just started sewing. Now I’ve been sewing for over 2 years. I’m planning to film an updated wardrobe tour in spring or summer so that way you can all see how things have evolved. Thank you so much everyone for watching! Do you enjoy seeing "lifestyle" historical content like this? P.S. Captions are now up as well!

I wear historical clothes [1900- 1930 mens]. Here is my tip - to begin with wear them after dark. Once you have worn an outfit a couple of times at night you will feel much more comfortable wearing it in the day - I promise. Adn it IS true what people say - that 99% of all the comments are very positive. It genuinely makes other peoples day to see you!

I believe your the only historical costumer Im subscribed to that actually shows their wardrobe. Its super nice and its ideal since from what I read, most people had maybe two or (if lucky) three outfits and cool to see what you wear. Im still just working on my very first outfit but this gives inspiration for other outfits 😄

Thanks for sharing your wardrobe! I've been wearing 12-14th century inspired clothing for many years now, every day. I'm not into fashion, but prefer comfort and function and these early styles are, well, me! Last winter I wore a cotton flannel chemise under wool dresses, even when it was well below zero and was never cold. Our ancestors knew what they were doing! Keep up the good work!!

Totally agree. I often get asked if I’m cold in my skirts. Nope, I’d venture to say I’m far warmer. I’m happy for modern advancements, but we really shouldn’t discount our ancestors. Sometimes they really knew better. 🥂

How do you deal with going inside places? I like to wear 1930’s and 1940’s styles a lot and when I wear one to church I practically burn up in winter and freeze in summer. When you dress for the weather and then go in a climates controlled building its hard!
@VBirchwood
@VBirchwood 2 жыл бұрын
@@Diniecita Yeah it can be tricky! I say wear layers. So have a blouse, and then perhaps a waistcoat and a jacket too. With 30s and 40s they wore a lot of knits, so having one handy helps. Also choosing the right materials that’ll be temperature controlled. I find having your base layer be made of linen extremely helpful and then having natural fibres on top as they breathe much better.
@ragnkja
@ragnkja 2 жыл бұрын
@@Diniecita That’s a challenge our ancestors didn’t face to the same extent that we do (because the temperature difference between inside and outside tended to be smaller), so we’ll have to find our own solutions to it. Layering seems like the easiest one to me.

I have no idea how I ended up here, but here we are. I was watching videos about motorcycle racing, guns and listening to some classic rock and hip hop. Next thing I know you popped up on my recommended videos and, well, you looked cute as hell in your vintage dress so I decided to see what you were doing. I watched a few of your videos since last night; finding time to sew, benefits of wearing historical clothing, sticker phobias, and now this one. Again, I have no idea why I am hooked all of a sudden on historical fashions (though I do love history) but I really enjoy listening to you talk about something you are so passionate about. Gotta love that. As far as your wardrobe is concerned - now that I have watched a few of your videos I am now somewhat of an expert on vintage styles so here's my two cents. 4:53 is very cute and I love how it fits you. It looks comfortable and very springy - the season, not the bouncy thing. 8:12 is very stylish and the white collar really looks nice in contrast to the rest of the outfit. However, my favorite is 7:46. I think it's because it immediately reminded me of Olive Oatman. If you go to her Wikipedia site, you will see a photograph of her in a dress very similar to what you are wearing. If you've never heard of her, she has an incredible story of survival under some very difficult circumstances. Her face was tattooed by her kidnappers and in the photo of her wearing that similar dress, you can clearly see the marks they left on her. I think that's one of the reasons her story stands out for me - the contrast of a beautiful woman in her sophisticated and fashionable dress, still marked by a time in her life that was brutally cruel. I remembered her photo not because of the dress she was wearing, but because her strength made it and her life worth remembering. Your enthusiasm, grace, class and sense of style apparently keeps me coming back for more. In other words, I'm not here for the vintage fashions. I'm here because you bring fashion to life.

Thank you so much Katie! At the moment I'm an MA student, but before I worked remotely, and will resume that type of work once my degree is done. I'm definitely in a position of privilege when it comes to being able to have the freedom to wear historical clothing every day, and it's unfortunate that employers potentially would look down upon others for dressing more archaic. It's ironic too because this style of dress used to be what was socially acceptable and now it is the opposite lol.

It certainly depends on the industry. In the service industry for instance, which is what I worked most of my teens and early 20s, anything out of the ordinary (even coloured hair) would not be allowed. Also in many office and corporate jobs, anything deemed “distracting” is often not allowed.

@@VBirchwood - You said you were doing an MA - so I was kinda thinking more of a professional setting. And re "many office and corporate jobs, anything deemed “distracting” is often not allowed" - it entirely depends if the company wants individuals with talent and creativity or just robots fulfilling a task. My point is, there are companies that would immediately White you if you turned up to an interview in a historical outfit cos they are looking for that type of person, someone who "thinks outside the box" and all the other cliches... I think there would be many companies where it would be welcomed. I have certainly worked for several.

I totally get that historical fashion has its benefits over modern stuff. For example no plastic and oilbased fabrics only natural fabrics. Easier to repair and if the shape of the own body doesn't matches with the clothes it is easier to alter them to the own needs. But I'm not at all into fashion for me clothes serve different purpuses, they keep me warm, they have bags to carry small things, they protect me from cuts and scratches if I work or go through thorns in the woods and they prevent that anyone is offended because I'm naked. Purpuses that they don't have to fullfil in my eyes is to look good. A hat for example has its purpuse it shields my head and eyes from the sun. On rainy days they keep my hair try. If I'm in an enviroment where the risk is given that anything falls into my hair or neck a hat will prevent that, but all this doesn't need a feather attached to the hat. Same with any kind of jacket it needs as much buttons as it needs to keep it closed and maybe on each sleeve one to keep the sleeve thight but no extra row of buttons just for the looks. But these are all critics that also are for modern fashion there is too much that has form over function but I would prefer function and nothing extra.

Regarding the "mish-mash." Both men and women of the middle and lower classes, would have gone on using "vintage" garments that survived, along with some "modern" (to them) items. So, in that sense, the combination would be historically accurate.

Hi Victoria, I absolutely LOVE that you have the I-don't-care-what-others-think attitude and love of historical clothing so much that you wear historical clothing every day!! What do you do for work? Does your boss, or whoever you answer to at work, encourage this for you? I'm retired from my main profession and now can pursue my passion, sewing, as much as I am able given my other commitments (family, caring for grandchildren, etc.) I make many things as gifts for my family and I also make all my own all natural, organic skin care products, and also some for my family and friends who like to use this type of products for themselves. I made for myself a 1575 dress and all undergarments that go with it. I am now taken with the 1875 Victorian garb so am in the process of making several (numerous??) dresses for this time period. You have helped me have the courage to wear them out for everyday errands, which is the only time I get out, as my husband is disabled (heart, not mobility) and doesn't go out of the house much. But this is a season in my life and maybe at some future point I'll be able to wear them more. For now I'll continue to sew!! Your videos are GREAT!! I'm a loyal subscriber! Thank you for putting them out! Also could you point me in the direction of some reliable websites that sell antique jewelry, parasols, clothing, etc.? Thanks!

That’s so lovely to hear that you’ve fallen in love with historical fashion too and are sewing it also! For antiques, I would recommend eBay. @@VBirchwood Thank you for the words of encouragement! I have adored period clothing for more years than I’d like to count… and yet always been hesitant to stand out so much in public, being a naturally reserved type. I love that you have the courage and the confidence to wear what feels true to you, regardless of what others think. It shows resilience of spirit. With neither the budget nor the sewing skills, I have no idea how embark upon this journey… and seeing you living it very much makes me want to try! One question… Is there any possibility of creating a capsule wardrobe in period style? With diverging eras/styles I imagine it to be quite difficult… and also because for most fashions spanning 1660s-1900ish, the outfits were made as a complete ensemble, with bodices and skirts (and overskirts) made to match from head-to-toe. Mixing and matching wasn’t a thing back then!!! Any advice on how to get started would be most appreciated 💝🙏😇

@@lilaeia Thank you for your kind words! One thing you can do, especially if your finances are tight, is to thrift historically inspired items that mimic aspects of history but are secondhand or even contemporary designs. I'll have a video coming out in two Thursdays from now (the 29th) that gives tips about this, so hopefully that will help. Re: the capsule wardrobe, I have pondered upon this before so it's funny you bring it, and I do think it's possible but you may have to stick to specific periods in history to keep it easy on yourself. While it is true that historically people wore a lot of matching sets, this is really only the case for the upperclasses and the working classes had a lot of simple mix-matched garments. I think this might be because some of it would've been passed down to multiple children. I'm not completely sure, but I feel like this could be a potential theory. I would recommend for a capsule 18th century wardrobe to choose simple wool or linen bodices and petticoats in colours you enjoy, neutral tones are nice to have because they can easily be matched with other garments. For 19th century, you could choose a variety of shirtwaists and pleated petticoats in different colours and made from materials like wool and linen/cotton as these different materials and textures pair well together. In general, just try to aim for some sort of bodice/shirtwaist and petticoat. For 18th century caracos are nice, and similar related bodices, and just a basic fitted bodice or a shirtwaist is ideal for 19th century. Most of all, try to keep it simple and get durable materials that you'll actually be comfortable in, because then you'll actually want to wear your wardrobe more often 😊Also, go with a sleeve length you like, and don't force yourself to wear a sleeve length that you're not comfortable in. For example, I really don't like 3/4 sleeves much like is seen a lot in the 18th century, but plenty of people were also wearing full length sleeves then, so I make all my 18th century garments pretty much with full length sleeves haha.

Comments on Beedle the Bardcore sent me here. Hello. :) I am an absolute luddite (in a bad way) when it comes to fashion, although I'd like to think I have a certain "unique" style/aesthetic of my own which pays little attention to current trends and is just a mishmash of Stuff I Feel Comfortable In Or Just Like Okay... hey, whatever helps you sleep at night... :) All of that said... this is absolutely amazing. The clothing, the visual quality and production values, your down-to-earth presentation style (with good editing!), and your sheer commitment to expressing yourself through a style that you obviously love... all of it is hugely impressive and very watchable. I had no idea that people wore "antique" clothing daily, and I kind of wish that I myself could commit to any such interest with as much enthusiasm and passion as you display here. Subscribed, cheers from Sydney Australia. PS. Will definitely be sharing this channel with several people who I just know are going to absolutely love it! :)

Welcome to the channel! Happy to have you here. Thanks so much for your kind comment. I think at the end of the day, we all should just wear what brings us joy, regardless of what is on-trend, etc. I'm glad that you express that you follow this as well, by wearing whatever it is that you enjoy. I'm not sure how many people wear full-on historical clothing daily, though I do know of at least a handful around the internet (and I'm sure more must exist outside of the internet), but historybounding or historically-inspired clothing has become madly popular in the past year or two, and people are finding incredibly clever ways to incorporate historical elements into their contemporary wardrobes, which I think is beautiful. I greatly appreciate you taking a look at this video and for your kind words about it, it means a lot to me, and finally thank you for the subscribe 😊

@@VBirchwood Always thought of it as just a part-time cosplay thing, which I suppose is how many people treat it... until now maybe? Perhaps this is a field of interest that is being swelled by people pursuing new interests during Covid-19 quarantine? In any case, I look forward to seeing some of your antique jewellery collection too... again, I have no academic knowledge of such things, but I can always appreciate the fine craftsmanship of a bygone age. Thanks for the welcome, keep making your stuff, it's awesome! :)

@@sixstringedthing I definitely do think some people may have gotten into historical costuming/historybounding because of cosplay. Also, I think reenactment events are commonly a way that someone might get into historical fashion. I've personally never been drawn to cosplay, though I can see why others are, as it does look like a lot of fun, especially if you really connect with a character. I've also never gone to any reenactment events. There are a number of reasons why I started wearing historical clothing a couple of years ago (I'm actually going to make a video explaining about this soon!) but one of the biggest was for sustainability reasons. I wanted to curate a wardrobe of quality clothing that I could mend/repair/alter and that would be made very slowly either by me, or by other independent dressmakers/crafters to try and reduce my footprint on this world as much as possible. Absolutely though, the pandemic has probably opened people up to new worlds and new interests, which is a strange positive to come out of this otherwise very difficult and tragic situation. Also, I think people are just spending a lot more time on platforms like KZbin, which helps to get "obscure" niche videos more exposure, just due to sheer demand. None of my own wearable wardrobe is antique (as I only collect antique clothes for study, as I just find them to be too risky to wear due to being difficult to clean and extremely delicate) but antique jewellry is an entirely different matter because of how sturdy it is. I'm happy to hear you'd be interested in seeing the jewellry collection, as this is definitely something I'd like to share in the future. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment :)

@@VBirchwood your motivations regarding sustainability are entirely admirable. :) I grew up at a time when environmental awareness and "reduce, reuse, recycle" was starting to really gain traction in the wider public consciousness (not just amongst the "hippies and weirdos") so I feel very strongly about simply taking the time and thought to make or repair or repurpose things in a manner that extends their usefulness and reduces their impact. We all need to do what we can, in whatever ways we can. Wish there were more people like yourself who felt the same way!

@@sixstringedthing Thank you sixstringedthing! I think there is a big movement now happening with more people realising the importance of taking care of our planet, though I think the difficulty is that a lot can be greenwashed, and so things that we might assume are sustainable/are told are sustainable, turn out not to be with more education and information. At the end of the day, I suppose we can all just do our best, and it's always going to be imperfect, but I think awareness and mindfulness in society is a big step in the right direction.

Thank you very much! I have a video called “I Have a Sticker Phobia...and Other Reasons Why I Wear Historical Fashion Everyday” where I go into depth about my reasons why, but essentially it comes down to being an artist and wanting to wear walking art, for sustainability and slow fashion reasons, and also because of said sticker phobia. Also I’m an ethnic minority (Tatar/Cossack) so my ancestors could have never dreamed to afford nice silks and such and I’ve worked hard to get here in my own life, so I like to pay homage to them and imagine that they’d be proud if they were alive today.

@@VBirchwood Oh I'm sure I'd found history of fashion much more entertaining than actual, modern, everyday practice of... well, fashion. That thing escapes me completely, and I decided a long time ago just to stop paying mind to it. Now that I saw your clothes there, I think that was the first time in a decade at least that I seriously considered what I wear. Heck, maybe historically inspired, "highly retro" clothing is something I should think about? @@tomaszwota1465 I’m glad that this video has made you reflect and ponder at least! That’s what I want to do with these videos, is help people improve their lives by expressing themselves authentically through the means of historical-inspired fashion. Which is very much how historical fashion has helped me as well. You should go for it! I really dislike commercial clothing stores as well, and that’s part of why I started dressing like this (I’m releasing a video explaining deeper the reasons why next week). Also you can find a lot of historically inspired items at a charity shop or thrift store if you just know what to look for. I have an older video where I give some advice, though it pertains to women’s fashion mainly. But an easy way to go is just by choosing wool and linen, and wearing loose long sleeve shirts that are more flowy and baloony, and basic wool trousers. There are lots of little things really that can make an ensemble feel more archaic. I hope though that you find a style that works for you! And don’t be afraid to experiment and see how what you wear really makes you feel.

Have you considered starting with historybounding or implementing little historical elements to begin with? Growing a historical wardrobe honestly takes a lot of time. For secondhand clothes, most of my 2-3 piece historical sets were around $120.00 or less, and capelettes were around $25.00 or less. @VBirchwood
@VBirchwood 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I didn’t make this one but I know how to! It’s just pleated with knife pleats on separate panels (I think there’s 5 in total around the skirt) and the key is that the waistband has very stiff interfacing in it, which helps to hold a lot of the weight up and provide support. It isn’t too overly heavy as a corset under and petticoat help to support the weight a lot. With regards to historical fashion without corsetry, I don’t have a ton of experience but I’d say opt for more casual loungewear and workwear, like simple shirtwaists and skirts, even sports wear like 1890s shirtwaists and cycling bloomers, and then things like Victorian wrappers or even 18th century informal gowns which look kind of like fancy bath robes but are very wearable.
