Hi Michael, I really enjoyed sampling the Indian records you picked up, especially The Jasmine Isle. Thanks for expanding our musical horizons.

Hi Michael! Just got back from a trip to Germany and so nice to relax a bit and watch your new vid. The Dørge album sounded really lovely.(Never heard of despite Denmark and Sweden are neighbours.)Must also check out the Ives symph. And tonight I'm gonna see Einstürzende Neubauten. All the best //🎶😎👌

I noticed an album cover bird theme. Thank you for the inspiration for me to pick up a copy of Gamelan Music Of Bali today.

Great! Happy listening. Well spotted on the bird theme!

I was blown away when I first heard gamelan music. Partly because I was also stoned. Yes, it is the imprecision in the tuning, and also in the rhythm that makes it so interesting..
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
In San Diego in the '70s we had a classical radio station that got pretty adventurous, and that's where I first heard gamelan music. I'm pretty sure it was not from the Nonesuch albums, but the Exotic Sounds of Bali LP on Odyssey. Thanks for watching!

Whirled music..good pun /I like that Himalayan tune you played/my wife is from Bangladesh/ part of the country is near the Foot of the Himalayan Mountains I've been listening to some World music myself.. From Zanzibar...group called Ikhwani Safaa Musical club.. Good stuff...
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Hi Isa! I forgot to make my joke about "whirled music" being because the records whirl around on the turntable. That's cool about the music from Zanzibar. I am unfamiliar with that and should check it out. Thanks for watching!

Michael, you must be reading my mind with this video as l've been considering doing a feature on the Explorer series, and l just played that Dorge record recently. l only have one lves lp, violin and piano sonatas that is on the Nonesuch label. Excellent discussion on the music as usual... take it easy
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Hi Sherv! You should definitely do a feature on the Nonesuch Explorer series, I would really enjoy seeing that. Thanks for watching!
@michaelvalentini4869Ай бұрын
Sherv, Dorge played in Tchicai's big band in the late 1960's, I don't know if he was just part of John's touring live band or played on the released records, live or studio. Those Ives violin sonatas are amazing, it took me several listens to understand their magic. Actually what really opened my ears to them was a recording from 1998, by Curt Thompson, violin and Rodney Waters, their interpretation is much more ''vibrant'' than any other earlier version. Naxos, the ''budget'' label has a series of Ives on cd. AAAAhh, the new Hendrix box set!

Cannot go wrong when Dorge and Tchicai get together.

I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with Dørge and it was Tchicai’s presence that caught my eye. Thanks for watching!

I have often been referred to as a scared water buffalo amongst many other things. I noticed that the background albums magically changed. I always enjoy seeing what you have chosen to display. The Explorer series introduced me to a lot of music from around the world. This weekend is the Bar B Q and Blues Fest here in New Orleans.....and it's free!! I'll be getting the blues😂

Hi David! Well spotted on the background albums! I decided to have a little extra fun with them this week. Love me some blues--enjoy the fest, and thanks for watching!

Michael, I have many Charles Ives albums, but seem to be lacking in symphonies. Thank you for showing this particular one. - Chris
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Hi Chris! The Ives 4th Symphony is a real beast. I just picked up a copy of the 1st today. Thinking I might do a special video on Ives in the future. Thanks for watching!
@michaelvalentini4869Ай бұрын
Michael, for this video I didn't need Sherv's asssistance. I figured out, all by myself, that the album covers on your shelf represent a dedication to Charlie Parker. Thank you for playing a snippet from the ''Kashmir'' collection. I could never find that one in shops. At one time, I owned 68% of the Explorer Series on vinyl and now have several on the cd format. I saw the Pierre Dorge New Jungle Orchestra perform live inside a small recital room at Brown University. The large band filled that tiny space with exactly the same sound that you so eloquently described! It was the first and only time that I witnessed the live playing of Harry Beckett, John Tchicai and Johnny Dyani ( he died less than a year later). Zappa caused me to jump into the wonderful world of Charles Ives. Carla Bley wrote many tunes directly influenced by Ives, the most obvious is ''Spangled Banner Minor And Other Patriotic Songs''.
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Hi Michael! Good "birdwatching." That Pierre Dørge concert sounds awesome. John Tchicai just showed up in my Facebook memories today, as it is the anniversary of the date I heard about his death. (He had actually died on the 8th.) Excellent observation about Carla Bley--she does have a lot in common with Ives! Thanks for watching!

I started grabbing some of the nonesuch explorer series about 5 years ago, they’re the definition of cheap heat. By your description the Dorge seems interesting too, but the samples didn’t immediately grab me. Great stuff overall.
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Cheap heat is right! Great stuff, and even when they were new they were budget priced. Thanks for watching!

Liked the Nonesuch world music albums you picked up - particularly the Kashmir one -never see any such albums in our record fairs here. The Pierre Dørge album sounds pretty good - not an artist I've ever come across. Cheers Pete PS like the avian album covers in the background.

I almost made a remark that the Kashmir LP sounded nothing like Led Zeppelin, but I must have thought better of it. Well spotted on the bird theme. Thanks for watching!

Nice trio of nonesuch lp's..i am almost done with what i need in the series i think i have 70 or so..they are a great gateway into the world of ethnographic music as they had major label distribution(warner bros) so they are often easy to find and cheap..i used pick them up all the time years ago in the dollar bins and also remember them from my school library as a kid way way back..lol. Being a musician yourself i like the way you describe the music in technical terms without being to academic about it. I had a few dorge lp's at one time but not that one.. I think that one might still be on my wl in fact..lol.. Nice pick ups..much love chris
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Hi Chris! All of these Explorer LPs were from the 49¢ bin--the Ives too. Cheap heat! I picked up the Dørge in San Francisco a little while back. Thanks for watching!

Your discussion of music is second to none Michael. I must say the vocals on the Himalayan music was a little rough on my ears. The Danish album sounded pretty good to me. I have not heard of Charles Ives, is that Burls dad? Nice introduction to his music
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Hi Steve! Charles Ives was a real character, a great American eccentric. Maybe someday I could do a video about him. His music was too wild and experimental to get very many performances in his lifetime, so he made his living as an insurance man, and was actually extremely successful in that field. Thanks for watching!

Don't undersell your Scandinavian pronunciations! I think a Dane would understand easily. A Norwegian certainly did. You have trained me to pay attention to Nonesuch Records in the used bins, and continue to do so. Unfortunately not the most common here. Take care, Richard
@michaelpdawsonАй бұрын
Thanks Richard! There is plenty of cheap heat out there on the Nonesuch label. I see tons of early music releases (medieval/renaissance/baroque) in the local bargain bins.
