Great tip, I would use some of that citrus degreaser from Home Depot that comes in a 1 gallon bottle that's meant to be mixed down 4 to 1 because it's not as expensive as premixed 409. That's what I use all around my shop to clean my tools and other things and it works really well.

I would think you could use a more aggressive solvents than 409, like Acetone or Lacquer Thinner. It might take the paint off but that is only there to prevent corrosion of the disc (and if the paint is mostly worn off anyway...). You can even go so far as to strip & repaint your blades, but you'd have to tape/mask every carbide tooth to do that. Also, as long as the material of the scrub brush is softer than the carbide teeth (e.g. brass vs. carbide ... brass looses) you shouldn't have to worry about scrubbing them more aggressively aggressively. Worst case you can make your own carbide sharpener (must be a video or two out there for that too)

Great video. I hadn’t thought about cleaning my blades but I’ve got several that need it. Thank you. One thing you mentioned was Simple Green. It’s an excellent degreaser, but folks need to be careful leaving blades in the solution for too long, as Simple Green will cause carbide leaching and, if the blades aren’t carbide-tipped, will corrode most non-plated steels, potentially leading to putting, cracking, and all hell literally breaking loose. I can’t vouch for 409, but it appears to be a little milder corrosion-wise than Simple Green. Just a thought from some personal experience. Again, great video! I’m glad I held onto my older blades so that I can give them a shot at a second life.

I'm building a base cabinet and had to make a 4ft cut using a circular saw I bought because the blade is on the left a Porter Cable 423mag circular saw. I wanted the blade to be on the left because if you're right handed its easier to track and follow your cut line. The Porter Cable 423mag may throw saw dust in my face but cutting wood is soooo smooth and effortless and I can stay on the line easily. So watching you cutting that plywood looked as if you were painfully putting in some elbow grease effort which made me think bout all the smoothy cuts I made today prior to watching your vid. I'll look out for the crap in my blades and the burned wood. I didn't get any of that today but thanks for the alert!

Quick and dirty option is to just flip the blade backwards and run it into the end grain for one or two passes. It'll knock the gunk off the tip of the carbide and off the cutting corner of it. It won't be as pretty for as long as a good cleaning but it'll get you to the end of the day

@802Garage
@802Garage 4 жыл бұрын
@@AEON. I'll be honest parts of what you are saying don't make sense. WD-40 doesn't soak into metal, you can clean it off pretty easily. It can soak into wood though. Of course it's not an abrasive. It's a liquid. It breaks down the adhesive material of many types and makes it easier to scrape or scrub off. You clean up when you are done. Not like I've done it a thousand times or anything.
@802Garage
@802Garage 4 жыл бұрын
@@AEON. I don't think you understand what is meant by that term. Yes, metal is porous, and to an extent it will get into the pores, but generally very surface level. A quick spray with any kind of cleaner be it brake clean or alcohol will get it off of metal. By penetrating oil it means it can seep into cracks and threads, such as through rust which is very porous, and work it's way down a bolt which has a nut on it for example.
@BADALICE
@BADALICE 4 жыл бұрын
Glad I read the comments first, I was going to mention WD-40. If you know how well it works on removing sticky labels, then you know how well it dissolves adhesives. It keeps the blade from rusting as well. I might as well mention windex, which I keep right next to the WD-40, the best all around cleaner for just about everything. I'd put it up against 409 any time.
@BADALICE
@BADALICE 4 жыл бұрын
@@AEON. WD-40 will make short work of adhesive. Wipe down the blade, then blow off the blade with compressed air. then wipe it down again. It only takes a little windex, a tooth brush, and compressed air to return the blade to normal. 409 belongs in the bathroom.

Silicon on the blade would make it cut easier and last longer between cleanings. Now a word of advise if you notice you blade seems to be cutting out of true change the collar behind the blade. What a difference. I never noticed it as much on the skillsaw but the Dewalt chop and slide saws 12" very sensitive to the collar wear and it does wear. If you ever spin a blade for whatever reason look at the cut it can instantly kill that collar. Believe me it makes a difference. I loved my Dewalt saws and always went with the 12"

This video gives a great advise, and actually it might work in the case you have to spent time going to the store to buy the blade, it always takes time going to the store, that's why im prepared, I have extra blades in my trailer. I use paint thinner for cleaning. But honestly, if a blade is burning, to the point of a wavy cut. It means that blade is so hot, it's flexing. Which also means you're gonna lose tooth set. What creates the kerf. Without a decent kerf it's gonna heat up again. And for u know it, burning. But ur right about cleaning pitch off your carbide tips. But you should do it before it starts burning.

The side circular wear in the paint suggests the blade has dished, probably due to overheating. If the deformation is wider than the tooth offset then the blade will bind in the kerf and heat even more.

First of all: when cutting wood, even laminated, the residue mostly wood resin mixed with small amounts of wood. Resin containing formaldehyde sounds unlikely, though not impossible. Nothing to worry about. A steel wire brush is a bit overkill. Some saw blades come with a coating preventing residue build up. You don't want to scrape that off. Start with a toothbrush. The carbide inserts can easily be cleaned with a wooden toothpick. You could also use a brass brush (sometimes used to clean spark plugs, same size as a toothbrush) if the build up is really bad.

First of all, while you can use a carbide tipped blade to cut material that has those unusual glues and adhesives, it is not advised to do so. There are many ways to achieve a goal, some much better than what you did using the carbide tipped blade. yes there are certain types of adhesives that will gum up a blade quickly. When yo discover that your work done with a blade has gummed it up, switch to one of the alternative methods. I'm a 66 year old carpenter, furnituremaker, and cabinetmaker, that has been into this business since the age of 12. I know a lot about using the blades you are talking about, and learned long ago how to make my blades last a very long time. Not just circular and table saw blades, but also jigsaw, and bandsaw blades. In my business, I kept about fifteen blades for my tablesaw, each for specified purposes, and the same for my circular, and compound miter saw. when I made cuts through laminate glue and other adhesives that could gum up the blades, I would always use a blade that was made for the purpose. Another thing I never do is use water based solutions like 409 to clean my blades. all it takes is a small amount of that liquid being missed when you dry the blade, and the steel in the blade will start to rust. I use 3 in One machine oil, let the blade soak in it over a day or two, and then I use a nonabrasive cleaning pad to wipe the blade clean. I use mineral spirits to rinse the oil away and usually the blade needs not be wiped much. Mineral spirits will, under normal circumstances, evaporate before you can reinstall it on your power tool. If you are coming up with all of this, concerning the blade and tool manufacturers and retailors, you obviously don't talk to them. Rather, you expect them to volunteer the info you say they won't tell you. Well they have their businesses to run, and not much time for volunteering info you are not actively seeking. imagine doing that for every customer or buyer. They would never get their own jobs done. You act as though they don't want you to know, but the truth is that you are responsible for finding that info for yourself! How can you do that? Speak with experienced workers in your field of work, ask relevant questions, and hear what they say! I'm from a long line of people in this business, but even so, I did not ask my experienced family members about what they knew. I asked my teachers and my coworkers, all of whom are experienced. Never expect someone to give you info you have not asked for.

But...Look Very closely at your blade after first-second use and what do see ?? Paint missing- smeared/slightly melted in the cut depth ?? This is the first and worst compounds that build up on the carbide cutters !! One of the First things a craftsman of years past would do to condition the blades for years of use is REMOVE the logo PAINT !! on both sides of the blade to the depth of your deepest cut you'll ever use.

I do not brush in reverse unless I am using a brass brush. If I am using steel I will brush from the centre out.

If you push the saw real slow while cutting it builds up heat in the wood 😮 and when the blade gets hot it will cause the blade to wobble creating a wavy cut 😮

WD40 and carb cleaner as well as oven cleaners all will work to clean the gunk just depending on what it is your cleaning off.

Simple Green is pretty much the best you can get for cleaning up pitch, goo, and adhesive from your blades

You can get lots of miles cutting hardwoods, but construction lumber will gum up your blade quick. I learned a long time ago to save up, buy the best and only cry once. Yes a Forrest blade is $150 for a 10" tablesaw, but there is enough carbide on the teeth to resharpen 6+ times. Meanwhile, cleaning them is the rule to keep the teeth working well. Good call sir. The commercial blade cleaners are great and fast, but 409 and simple green will do the trick with a little more time to sit and work on the teeth. VERY IMPORTANT: If your house has a water softener, the salt in the water will EAT your blade: using bottled water to rinse is a VERY GOOD IDEA.
