Mike, the quality of your restoration work , video taking and narration is second to none. I love taking the time to watch all your 911 videos, and learning new things that I can apply to my 1974 911 2.7 MFI Carrera. Thanks a million.

Mike - you should pick up some Rodico putty. It is indispensable for watchmakers. Can be used to clean the crystal, hands and dials of finger prints, oils, dust etc. before sealing them up. Would work perfectly when doing gauges too and it's only a few bucks.

Wow, this is really really good! I have a 356B and the odometer stopped working (speedo needle is fine). I may go ahead and give it a try myself. Reading on some forums and FAQs, it seems most likely the pot metal gear has come loose from the shaft. Folks have said using a some pliers to slightly deform the center hole in the gear so that it "grips" the shaft better is a decent fix. To do this, can I squeeze that center of the gear without removing everything from the shaft? Folks also said don't remove the needle if I'm only fixing the odometer, but it's not clear how I would access everything without taking off the needle and face plate?

Hello Atypical thank you Its possible to perform some of the work yourself..however some of the components inside really require the correct tools and knowledge of how it all works. The video here is just a basic refresh and lube rather than repair. It's worth a try to have a look inside. If it looks beyond the small tooling require Its best to send it in to a professional to be safe. Good Luck!

Still waiting on the clock but when we put it together perhaps I can secure the bezel on that one.. Just pressing the lip over with a blunt screwdriver a little bit at a time. The Speedo shops would using a special tool to do this Im sure

hi, great video. can anyone show a video of the initial taking off of the gauge bezel ?
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Gerard I don't have any video removing the bezel but it is done with a very small screw driver. There are some vids on KZbin showing opening a Porsche gauge. Just carefully prying the edge up like a can opener. Good Luck!

strangely, youtube did not prompt this vid in the recommended section. i am not missing on any vids by Mike from the very beginning, but this algorithms of recommendation in youtube drives me nuts... as for the vid -as usually very detailed.

@MikesRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
Hello k0zyr..Thanks for the feedback. Yes KZbin has not been much help with the channel over the years. Most of the views and growth has been from Google search and sharing.. The Algorithm could care less about what we are doing here. However if I was turning a small bolt into a small knife or restoring a cigarette lighter the numbers would defy explanation.. Thanks for noticing and thanks again for the feedback!

Hello Mike all the dials were stolen from my 911 and so I bought the only other set I could find with the correct year. The tachometer in the new set does not work at all and apparently they receive a square wave from the cable connected to the coil. We have tested this wire and there is a voltage there although without an oscilloscope we cannot see exactly what. I suspect that the gauge is faulty and wonder if there is anything that I can try to repair the gauge before sending it off?? Many thanks
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations Жыл бұрын
Hello David, The tachometer is a very complicated and sensitive gauge to sort out. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have it sent out and tested. If it is functioning properly then the problem is else where. It's also difficult to install and remove for trouble shooting. For me if I had any doubts of the gauges history I would send it in and have it verified before installing permanently into the dash. We only have so much we are able to do as DIY..without proper tooling and test equipment its best left up to the professionals. Good Luck!

They look beautiful ❤️. Any thoughts on how to calibrate? Any obvious adjustments present inside?
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom Calibration on the speedo would most likely be done at the gear set inside the transmission.. they change tooth count depending on size of tires.. Tach would need top go in for professional calibration ..North Hollywood speedometer. That one is beyond my expertise!

Hello heiligerm, The clock has been tested and is rolled but the others are not at this time.. I will test drive the car when finished and if I need to access a gauge for a problem a will be able to do so. If I roll them before knowing how they will perform they will not survive another reopening and close Cheers!

Do you have any idea where I can find a 356 VDO tach/speedo/fuel gauge front bezel in 110mm vs the standard 100mm? I have a replica gauge with a square bezel vs triangle, and I’d like to to look correct. Unfortunately mine is 110mm wide and can’t find one that size.

Hello Fotopro Have you tried Hollywood speedometer or Palo Alto speedometer repair? I know they are able to source things that are not available to the open market place. Im not sure what they have but they would be your best shot Its work a try! Good Luck

Stellar video as always. I am continually amazed that your videos don’t have thousands more views. They are incredibly informative as well as being almost meditative to watch. I’m going to try to get one of the jalopnik staff to post a link! Did you have any internal conflict about whether or not to zero out the odometer or leave it as is?
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Giulia Thank you and I appreciate your feedback..KZbin's Algorithm not much support for the channel Any influence you might have that could help support what we do here is always appreciated! Yes I did have some small conflict on resetting the odometer.. but its so close to rolling over anyways A 0 reading seamed more appropriate for the restoration

Hi Mike, do you know where to buy gauge bulbs to a 912 (1966). Are led bulbs warm light available?
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Fredrik Yes they would be 2w bulbs and can be purchased through many of the main suppliers. I got new ones from Stoddard and they work great! Some of the 2w bulbs have a small flange on them (Hella) and will stop them from sliding into the larger plastic sockets . The bulbs sold by Stoddard have no flange..so works in all cases. It is not recommend to use any LED bulbs in these gauges as the LED burns too hot and the shields will not provide enough protection from the extreme heat.
@Eldfast
@Eldfast 4 жыл бұрын
@@MikesRestorations Thank you Mike. Then I go for old style bulbs. While it is a bit tricky to reach the bulbs I considered the everlasting LED. Another question after seeing your video on turn back lights. I lacked the part on how to polish the plastic correctly.

Great work Mike! What is the red warning light in the TEMP gauge? Is that alternator?
@MikesRestorations

Hello David Yes the round red on the large combo gauge should be alternator.. I misread my notes on the gauge installation video and called it out on the fuel gauge but the red on the fuel gauge will light up at 1.6 gallons low fuel

Thanks Mike. You noted in reply to my comment on the last video that my speaker grill pattern is different from yours. It is interesting that my gauge spec is different too. My chassis is a 912 ('74 911 engine), so would have thought it would be more spartan than a 911 (both 1967) but I have higher spec than yours for some reason. Here is a bad photo: www.dropbox.com/s/e7yuf7vc9jscik8/2020-05-08%2019.31.18.jpg?dl=0 The fuel gauge is off frame on the left.
