Vikimg Food | Veal Skewers (Шашлик) | Barley Porridge
Spring is the time of year which offers us a great choice in collecting medicinal and nutritious plants. That is why we start our Viking cooking by gathering ingredients in the vicinity of our camp. If we are lucky and Freyja’s blessing is above us it will not cause us any problems. So we gather nettle (stinging nettle), young onion (scallion), young garlic (green garlic) and bear leek (ramsons). We start cooking with a nice piece of cured bacon which we fry and then add barley and pour water over it. Then we add all the green goods we have and let it cook slowly. In addition, we prepare veal skewers to make it easier to spend a still cold night.
If porridge is your thing, you’ll definitely want to watch this! • Little Goat | Buckwhea...
Enjoy - Njóta!

Is cooking over a more aggressive fire versus coals easier for these recipes? Thank you for the content!

A good fire is primarily constructed out of hot coals and few logs of burning wood. A bed of glowing coals is ideal for roasting veal skewers, while direct flame is more suitable for pan or cauldron. Placing meat directly over the open flame is a guaranteed way to burn it. Try to build a fire on one side of your fire pit and use the other side to move hot coals🔥

I have camped extensively all over the world, and prior to 2014, lived 20 years in Alaska. I did not know if the trick of the fkaming fire was more crucial to the dish being prepared. When I go to reenactments, if there is no fire danger warning which prohibits open flames, I am usually on my own and keep a small fire of coals to prepare meals. My johnny cakes (journey cakes) I cook on flat rocks. Normally most events have pre-established fire areas in the camp area. Then I use logs to bank it and as work surfaces and setting pans on when I pull them from the coals. When I was a kid, I cooked on spits and really did a terrible job on gane birds in the field..lol. Skol!

Did he eat a piece of raw bacon?

It is cured bacon that is preserved with salt and left to dried for whole year, so technically it is not raw.

Vikings never used onions , garlic , black pepper , or turmeric … Alot of weapons and war stuff they show in the viking web series actually belongs to the indo Persian era
