In this movie I'll show you how to use the Blob Brush Tool in Adobe Illustrator to create organic-looking artwork. We'll also use it to do detail shading and highlights using custom shading hues.

Been a fan since you emerged on the scene, we started about the same time and yes, I was a paste-up artist too! Do you use a mouse or a tablet to draw in Illustrator? Love your channel--thanks in advance.

Gary, welcome fellow Design-O-Saur! I use a Microsoft mouse. Never like Apples mouses. I do use Wacom, but only when digitally inking in Ai.

I really like your videos, you're so inspiring thank you for what you're doing but I wonder why you don't use the shape builder tool rather than the pathfinder options because I think the shape builder is a lot quicker.

I do use the shape-building tool on certain things because it is faster for those. But on many shape building tasks the pathfinder is easier still. I’ll do a movie soon showing what I use it on though.

Thanks for this, Von. It's great to see Adobe has improved the Blob brush. It didn't merge in CS6 and I gave up trying. For a functional "blob brush" I started using Flash- colors merged into one shape and there was great wacom support. There was back and forth, exporting as fxg for illustrator. The new blob brush looks excellent.

I’m pretty sure it did in CS6 but not by default you had to set the tool options to achieve that? I may be wrong though since last time I used CS6 was over a decade ago now. That was when the snapping bug started that the Ai team still hasn’t fixed.

@@PPLLUVProcess You're right, Von! Thanks again. "Merge with selected" is checked by default. Unchecking makes it function properly. Why? Guess the programmers never used it. Shame on me for not looking.

Hi Von - I’m very curious if there’s a reason you don’t use draw inside or create a clipping mask instead of trimming every shadow and highlight shape to match the base color shape. Is there a strategic/technical reason or is it just preference?

Mainly just my preference. I know what I want so building non-destructively isn’t a concern and it’s a cleaner file. I don’t like the term non-destructive though, it negatively implies something is being destroyed. Nothing wrong with draw-inside though if you prefer that though.
