So your statement is completely false, albeit it's true the British and other colonial powers did it in their own interest, albeit in a time where it was considered glorious (slavery was no longer on the table in the 1800s, as the British cancelled it and used their navy to enforce it worldwide like no other nation had ever done in history up till that point). I'd gladly have aliens come and colonize Earth if it meant a few individuals and groups were killed, but all wars and crime dropped like a stone, and over the next 150 years our economy, technology, health, life expectancy and political sophistications skyrocket. It's hard to accept these complexities when we've been taught in black and white, but the complete modernization of stone age and medieval societies to early modern isn't something that can be judged in a binary manner, and anachronistic binary standards at that. From a utilitarian and consequentialist perspective Western colonialism was generally massively useful for groups that didn't get wiped, due to the wide gap in cultural (ideological/institutional) and technological complexity. From a deontological perspective it would have been seen as good at the time (except for the betrayal of some of the coastal polities they had alliances with, dishonorable breaches of treaties was not allowed, unlike conquest and colonialism), from the PoV of the present it is wrong, but one must apply principles that are well formed by that era, lest you accuse the same stone age societies of warring and occasionally genociding each other before British arrival (acceptable actually given their stone age culture, but one does not see criticism of that due to the oikophobia prevalent in western societies). Another way to look at it is perhaps that the transference of technology and culture is extremely important. Could it have been done through trade? Generally that only works with medieval societies, for obvious diplomatic, logistical, political and economic reasons splintered stone age societies are not able to engage in comprehensive trade. Trading with just the coastal polities would've led to their forming large empires which would like Japan, likely take fascist inspiration to justify their existing and continued conquests rather than follow the liberalizing West (albeit fascism did also make inroads in Germany and Italy).
