ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

These lectures are Swamiji’s response to Michael James who isolates Sri Ramana’s teaching. Swamiji is showing the greatness of Sri Ramana through its rootedness in Vedanta which makes the bloom of Sri Ramana something beautiful and worthy of our attention.

Bhagavan Shri Ramana Maharshi's explanation of 'Manonasha' : Maharshi: They say that mind is two-fold; there is the higher pure mind as well as the lower impure mind. The impure mind cannot know but the pure knows. It does not mean that the pure mind measures the immeasurable Self, the Brahman. It means the Self makes itself felt in the pure mind so that even when you are in the midst of thoughts you feel the Presence, you realize the truth that you are one with the deeper Self and the thought-waves are there only on the surface. Q.: The destruction of the mind or of the ego you speak of is then not an absolute destruction? Maharshi: Yes. The mind gets clear of impurities and becomes pure enough to reflect the truth, the real Self.

@38:20 - It indeed literally means 'annihilation' of the mind. But the mind here would be thoughts, not the faculties of the mind like memory, imagination, recall ability etc. There would be pin drop silence in the mind, such that one perceives Reality directly without the mind filtering it, without the mind talking around it. For example - when one is really engrossed in something, say a game or music, they are totally involved and all attention is being paid to the object, and no thought arises but only the object is experienced - that would be destruction of mind. However, in this case, the mind or thoughts return but when a yogin has reached a certain advanced stage, they can exist without thoughts. Even when they are engaged with the world, they don't really think, they perceive. They have a very intuitive way of functioning, the mind functions more intuitively than via the mechanisms of thought and logic. The term annihilation/destruction of mind in fact aptly conveys the meaning of what happens in those states and stages to yogins. But it is very difficult for someone to intellectually understand without a direct experience.

Rupert offers many guided experiences of "post-enlightenment sadana." As does his teacher, Francis Lucille. And his teacher, Jean Klein. They all acknowledge that we can have insight, yet the momentum of habits will persist (like a fan that keeps spinning after it is turned off). Rupert Spira is, indeed, masterful at illuminating the direct path. As with all masters throughout the ages, he acknowledges that it's possible but rare to instantly assimilate the Truth of the Self. Like all masters before him (and Swamiji here), he says that most of us require practice, repetition, and support (guru, Sanga) to establish and experience say, chit, ananda
