The Masked Man is genuinely the scariest Pokémon villain in this whole franchise. He kidnapped a bunch of children to be his soldiers, took over Team Rocket, dropped an ice meteor on Gold and Silver and put them out of commission for two volumes, put the whole Pokémon League into an all-out war to occupy the Gym Leaders, and fucking *caught* Ho-Oh and Lugia and made them his slaves. Kusaka was in his bag.

The GSC chapter is the highest the Pokémon series has ever risen in terms of storytelling. There’s almost no true filler, every event had value in the end, whether it was practical like the Mount Silver hot spring water, or thematical like the song Boy and His Lapras. The fact that all the characters established in the previous chapters also contributed really made it feel like the culmination of a grand adventure. And at the heart of it all was Gold, my favorite character in the franchise. In spite of his many flaws, he rose to the occasion, proving to the world that even reckless, hot headed goofballs like him can be a true hero!

This is hands down my favourite arc. This is how you do a sequel, take all the plot threads from previous arcs and tie them up neatly (and in a way that makes it seem like it was the plan from the very start). So much respect is given to the OG cast, none of them are passive, and whilst there is an element of them passing the torch it never feels like they are nerfed to make the new cast seem better. It truly is a continuation of the previous story, and a conclusion to everything up until this point, and acts as the template for all arcs going forwards (in how they conclude). And that’s without me going into how well they implement all the little details from the game, from Red using the team he uses in the games atop mt. Silver, The radio and poke gears being used all the time, The creation of the Johto Elite 4, the roaming beast trio, and the ending with Oak oversleeping using the exact dialogue from the start of the game. And let’s not forget how they turned probably the wimpiest gym leader into one of the scariest villains of all time, complete with a tragic back story that always brings a tear to my eye.

I really like how Silver's development is shown by how he fights using Frustration at the beginning and Return at the end, it's sounds like a small detail but it's actually pretty cool. It really got me like "man, they knew what they were doing"

Gym leader tournament arc was so hype when I read this my first time. Definitely sad it’s one of the last times I recall a tournament arc in the manga that brings back so many gym leaders

Gold The Hatcher/Breeder Anti-Hero. He's a bit temperamental, tends to do things for fun, and usually causes trouble (intentionally or otherwise) wherever he goes; but is a nice guy way, way underneath. That's what makes his character so fun for me this moment The final battle of the GSC arc also counts. Gold flies into the time stream riding on Raikou to stop Pryce. Then he tells Silver and Crystal to go back without him and he dives down towards the spot where Pryce is. Pryce asks how anyone could comprehend the pain he did when he held La Glace's egg in his hands after La Pris and La Prus died. Gold says he can, because he's the hatcher, then proceeds to unleash SUPER RISING THUNDER! (an attack powered by the moves of everyone else's Pokémon and channeled into his billiard cue like a lightning rod) and destroys the GS Ball that Celebi is stuck in. Note that he did this with a Pichu that's barely been born. That kid is BADASS.

Truly, that’s Gold’s best moment by far. He admits that while he jumps to conclusions and fights for himself, he figures it can’t hurt to help others along the way. What an amazing character!

Man, Pokemon Adventures was such a big part of my childhood, and these videos are a great way for me to revisit the story and characters, especially since I don't have time to reread the entire manga myself/don't have access to some volumes. This was always one of my favorite chapters. I like how they gave us a brand new group of enjoyable characters, but also managed to incorporate many familiar faces from the first 7 volumes. I can't wait for the RS video because that one is easily my favorite Pokémon Adventures chapter!

Great job once again! Dang, this video was almost 2 hours long already. Can't imagine how much longer the Ruby and Sapphire arc will be in comparison. This Gen 2 arc was really neat way to culminate the story up until that point and connecting all the dex holders at this time together. While i know people really like Silver for his backstory with the Masked Man (and some other stuff that will be revealed in future arcs), and Crystal was an interesting trainer to follow as well, I feel like Gold really does shine both in this arc and later on in HGSS. It's true that he can be a pretty selfish individual and often only helps if he gets some kind of benefit in return, but he never does anything out of malicious intent like the Masked Man. Even in his more selfish moments, Gold wouldn't leave people behind once he has what he wants. He genuinely is a great person, which makes the fact that people pass him over for important tasks pretty sad. I know this is explored a bit more in HGSS, but we do still see that in this arc as well. He wants others to see that is capable of pulling off incredible feats, and that he can be trusted with important missions, which is why he seeks validation from people like Professor Oak. So it is really nice to see Gold's simultaneous selfish and selfless tendencies contrast with the Masked Man at the end of this arc. He would do whatever he can to protect his friends and partners. Also, out of all the villains in Pokemon Special up until now (and future arcs, let's be honest), the Masked Man is probably the most reprehensible and evil in this series, even though his motivation for all of his actions ended up being the most simple. He manipulated the people around him, closed himself off from his genuine friends, kidnapped children and put them under his tutelage in a twisted version of a family, abused many people and Pokemon that he "cared" for, forced innocent Pokemon into committing acts that are against their nature, and put two regions under a great panic in his attempt to control time. And for what? Two Pokemon??? Just because he felt sad that he lost his Lapras' parents??? Instead of just raising the Lapras himself and helping it move on from its pain as well??? Did he really think he would be absolved of his actions just because he'd be able to have power over time??? My goodness, he really did delude himself into doing such horrific things just to get rid of his grief and his guilt, instead of listening to his friends who were worried for him and did whatever they could to alleviate his cold heart. Honestly, he really does deserve his fate of being lost to time..... ....is what I would say....but I'm going to save that for later.... >:c

While I believe the Yellow arc introduced the idea of taking the games story and adapting it to something unique, the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc cements Pokemon Adventures as a different way of portraying the games story and characters, and it definitely is higher up in terms of arcs for me. Great work on this video, it took ages to make but it was worth it.

For real, this arc is truly a masterpiece for taking all the standard elements and turning them into something both completely different yet still maintaining the spirit of the original. From this point forward the originality suffers as the games themselves get more plot focused. None of the subsequent arcs are bad, You just feel like this is the last time the writer had a truly free rein to do what he wanted.

@@intergalactic92 yes, I can understand that sentiment, the following arcs do follow a closer adaptation of the games, but the GSC arc really had a totally unique spin on it and I believe it was because as you said, the plot of the games was simpler earlier on. The return of Team Rocket is handled completely differently, and it has the main antagonist be (like Yellow's E4) a character who is good in the games. Even the character arc of someone like Silver is totally different to the games.

While all the other arcs are amazing, this one has some moments that are extremely good such as everyone fighting using legendaries, everyone sending their Pokémon out to help, and the cool connections between gameplay and story such as the trading or Kurt's PokéBalls. The character dynamics are at their best here as well since you get to see not only both sets of protags interact, but also gym leaders and elite four members. There's even a cute little tease between Janine and Falkner, likely a reference to the fact that you can see them going on a date at the department store every week on the same day. (Heck, the manga even manages to pair up Bill and Daisy fairly well.) I just wish that they actually did stuff with Red and Yellow since that plotpoint and everything else is practically dropped after this arc. (The FireRed/LeafGreen, HeartGold/SoulSilver, and Emerald arcs give us a bit more interactions between protags, but not much and then Diamond/Pearl is basically a reboot.)
