Wow, so great to see where the Vega is going now! I had the joy to sail with her as a teenaged trainee a few years ago, and it truly was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. This ship has been the source of fond memories for so many! Glad to see that she'll be cared for lovingly

A fantastic new adition for SailCargo...And the great building of the ship...A copper bottom...all bronze bolts ..I have never seen this... This ship needs no docking I guess...Nothing can grow on this hull... Hope to be able to sail with this ship....And do not forget that it all begun with the Tres Hombres in 2009. Thanks everyone who works on a cleaner world....

Splendid!! Hopefully she’ll be able to operate with enough profit, after her own costs, to produce a surplus that will provide financial input to accelerate Ceba’s build. She’s a beautiful vessel, well done for bringing it all together. 😎👍🍻🇬🇧

I can’t see the big oil producing countries just turning of the tap, shipping will still need clean diesel, it is virtually smoke less , than the black bunker fuel , and with scrubbers,it is super clean.

Danielle & company, please don't listen to the naysayers or let them dampen your idealism. Everyone who has ever introduced something new or different has had them, from Columbus to Steve Jobs. And probably the guy who first fastened a handle onto a stone hammer! Bravo to all of you in this project!!

Make rum. Ship rum. The sloshing in charred wooden kegs in the hold of a sailing ship will have it mellowed nicely -- probably equal to a 10-year aged rum -- by the time it arrives. Sell it as "the real stuff, shipped by sail at sea in the old way." I think a lot of modern sailors and pirate reenactors would make a pretty good sized market for such a brand. I mean, who would have anything else aboard their sailboats? If you want an idea of how big that market would be, just drive around marinas and count the number of masts sticking up in the air.

Wow nice purchase. Absolutely love your efforts and ideas but this is the first thing your organisation has done that actually equates to you having an actual commercial venture in process. I say this because it's taking way to long to launch your ship Ceba, Ships do not make money by standing still and that includes the building time. Keep up the fantastic work and fair winds and following seas to the crew.

I'm so happy that the torch has been passed to Sail Cargo. You don't realize that there are sailing vessels in active service (other than Dhows in the Middle East). My hope is that you blog both vessels while under sail, entering port, tying up, loading/unloading and leaving a port. Adjusting sails under various weather conditions is a feature I look forward to watching. ........................ enjoy

I love what SailCargo is doing. Phil Bolger designed a sailing cargo ship that could be built on a beach Vanuatu with basic skills from steel. It was to be a 95-foot gaff rigged sharpie that could carry bulk cargo as well as inter-island passengers. The ship is featured in his book, "Boats With an Open Mind." The fore-and-aft unstayed gaff rig would require far fewer crew than a square-rigger and have better ability to sail to windward. I think it could even be scaled up with one or two more masts and modified to carry containers.

Beautiful vessel and surely has lots of life left in her. She's basically a new boat. Copper sheathing her haul will help the haul last for a very very long time. As long as you can protect the deck from fresh water that is the key to making a boat last. It's the fresh water that's the killer to most boats and the sea worms but this haul has got the copper sheathing which is fabulous for protection. That's a great purchase, good for you's guy's. You can tell its bitter sweet for the previous owner's to have to move on, as I said, you can tell.

Not how to get rich quick, but could be a sound investment if all goes well. An early 1980s attempt at using a coastal schooner to trade along the northeast US coast failed when the boat wrecked on rocks, a sailor I know blamed lack of local piloting knowledge. Much can go wrong shipping by sail. I wonder if many of the crew trained on tall ship training ships. More power to them.

Niche market. no real way to make real profit at real cost. They wont be shipping stuff across the Atlantic that would not cost more in wages/ food and maintaining for a crew then what they could carry.

@TwilightMysts2 жыл бұрын
While I am very intrigued, I question it's economic viability. This ship will have orders of magnitude more crew per unit of cargo, plus significantly longer transit times (a hit both because people wait longer for their cargo and you have to pay the crew for longer for each trip). I also suspect that loading/unloading will be much harder than on modern cargo ships. I do hope you can make it work. One of my dreams is a sailing catamaran that could function as a research vessel or a cargo carrier. But it would cost far too much for me to build out of pocket, and I doubt it would be profitable enough to get investors to pay for it. Also, bringing on investors means someone else owns my dream, which I really hate. But still, I wish you the best of luck!

The future is all about being Substantable, we need to rethink how we live. The days of Next day delivery is over, its destructive to our environment and overworking employees. We need to Slow Down in Life, enjoy the moment. We shouldn't have tons of bills, we should be able to work 2 maybe 3 months a year.
