After hosting several years of large Thanksgiving family gatherings which were almost totally vegan, limiting and instructing people about what foods were welcome, this year we asked people to bring whatever they wanted. We didn’t want to continue to hear people complaining about “missing” their favorite foods any more, and we wanted the focus to be on being together, laughing and crying over stories and connecting. It was worth it to us to have the focus be on our Gratitude Circle during dinner, which was heartfelt and deep sharing from oldest to youngest, rather than what the food was. All 20 people present said it was our best Thanksgiving. There were numerous dishes that were totally vegan anyway, so everyone ate their fill. We are happy to maintain our vegan lifestyle the other 364 days. Thanks for a thoughtful conversation about this so that each person can find out where they are, at least for today!

Yes, always such a tricky balance, and I totally get how limiting and instructing people as to dishes that are welcome might not go over so well. Glad you had such a joyful holiday!

Someone pretty smart turned me on to M. Scott Peck, The road less traveled. He had some good thoughts on making decisions for others and when to do it.

Maybe, Jonathan Haite could write another book coddling the American pet. Lol. I tried to raise my dogs as independent as possible. I was able to successfully leave the dog door open for 5 days while I was gone. They were 13 at the time, a doubt it would have went as well when they were younger.

Interesting discussion. I entered the plant based world after listening to Dr. John McDougall’s TED talk about five years ago. I also watched “Forks Over Knives”. I’ve come a long way. I wanted to improve my health. I don’t, however, qualify to be called vegan though I haven’t eaten animal flesh in years. The discussion on pets resonated with me because I have a bored, 6 year old Shepherd mix. He has a doggie run out back. He had the run of the backyard for years but it got too muddy after he made permanent paths in the grass. We get rain and snow in our area. He doesn’t get walked much. I’ve been warned that he could get away from me. He hasn’t been neutered. What’s your view on neutering?

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, the neutering issue is tricky. Obviously, neutering a male dog is not what the dog would want! Some other dog parents would likely be upset if your pup got their female dog pregnant, but given that most female dogs are spayed, that may not be a real risk. And you've clearly managed this long, so it seems to be working out fine is my take...

I have tried several vegan foods (wet foods, not kibble) for my dog. He will eat anything, so he doesn't turn up his nose at it, but no matter how carefully and slowly I introduce the new food he can't digest it properly, so I have bitten the bullet and resigned myself to feeding him canned food with rabbit or fish, which are about the only things that don't give him the runs;-((

Oh, that's tough! For my step-dog, Daisy, we make her food from a recipe I found which is essentially about 6 sweet potatoes, 3 yellow squash, 2 cans chickpeas with liquid, a chopped up carrot, a spoonful of peanut butter, and about 1/2 cup water, all cooked in the Instant Pot (or boiled on stove) and then mashed up. You can add nutritional yeast as a seasoning. Daisy loves it, and almost all of the dogs I dog-sit do as well. Might be worth a try for your pup!
