I was in Philly once headed to upstate NY and McDonald's near the Greyhound bus station was the closest restaurant, so I went there. Max’s for a sirloin cheesesteak- gotta get onions and wiz, ishkabibbles for a chicken cheesesteak, but to eat the true Philadelphia sandwich you gotta go to John’s roast pork and get a roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone, broccoli rabe, and don’t forget the long HOT. Or you go to old original nicks roast beef on S 20th street and get the roast beef and cheese, don’t forget the long hot pepper. And add a side of gravy fries.

Philly has good cheesesteaks all over. In Delco try Leo’s or Pizza Oddesey. In the city don’t sleep on Larry’s, Jim’s, Overbrook Pizza or Taste. You won’t be disappointed by any of these. Geno’s and Pat’s are merely just over priced tourist attractions.

As a tourist, I always preferred Genos. Sliced versus chopped. Chopped to me equals steak ums. Sharp provolone, fried onions and a few dots of that red hot sauce. Back in the 90s, was at Genos in line, saw a woman pick up her cheese steak and slather that hot sauce on it like ketchup. She took a bite, spit it out on the sidewalk and asked the counter person if they would replace it. They declined and she threw the rest away in the garbage.

Jim's puts on a great show and they are great. But I picked up a fare there once and he was so upset he stuck a 38 special to my head and made me drive him to New Jersey . . . out in the middle of nowhere to kill me . . . 20 minutes into the ride, him yelling and threatening me, I asked him to put the gun down cuz he was making me nervous.
