Most of the great music of the 80's was dismissed as fake mainly because of MTV. TFF was the best of the 80's. The Seeds Of Love is a masterpiece from start to end, even the songs left off the original LP are great. Happy Ending is great too. I just wish they would get some new stuff to us, we need it in 2020. Roland and Curt are so honest and cool. They both show, Curt rather reluctantly, how discomfiting to be a public artist in these Times. The interviewers eventually were pretty good in their own right but I wish they'd probed a bit more about why it is that Orzabal and Smith have been so consistently decent and Humanistic in their choices, their craft and lyrical content. For example, when the artists said repeatedly that certain tracks were especially "hard" for them to make, I mean, "hard" how? Why hard? Did they mean technically hard? Artistically? Emotionally? Roland at one point states that they worked not to repeat themselves. That alone must be a very hard goal to achieve, and achieve it of course they did do. Brilliantly. It makes me very happy to see those two instinctive gents settle into middle age. They don't seem to construe how elegantly each of them has pulled off that feat. We all benefit from that, obviously. Just wanted to say so. It's due them. Their last album really was pristine and very affecting also. I like that they both state that we may or may not have heard the last from them, that it's just up them. That's as it should be, surely. Personally I'd be so proud to have done any possible fraction of what they have done, jointly and severally. The interviewers should have recognized this a mite more as a golden opportunity to stare Art in the face and to enquire how artmaking actually happens. Instead they took about ten questions just to put Roland and Curt at relative ease, when this effect could have been achieved immediately, with a single discerning question. Pick the question. It doesn't much matter which one, so long as it's not hack.

It's such a shame Roland in the younger years was not comfortable as a celeb. But when their band was formed they made massive hits that people loved. If I was Roland I would look back by watching a Tears for Fears song like Everybody wants to rule to the world and just see how lucky he was back then.

Everybody’s a critic, should be the name of this record. Some 80s artists love to hate on themselves, when they were amazingly instrumental in inspiring the best in music from that time forward. The fact that videos were made mainstream in the 80s make people cringe. I hate my pics from that time too, and now kids are looking at you and taking fashion from your look from that time. Appreciate yourselves. You made music when people used their limbic systems much more drastically. You made your audience feel something not by just your music but videos and shows. Your are the beginning of the end of what it means to be truly human. You sit in a priceless space.
@michellebritton-leonard39754 жыл бұрын
I think that last comment re: Curt not being able to sing is unfair. He certainly could sing when they were making albums in the 80s and whilst his voice was never anywhere near as powerful as Roland’s, he had an interesting, melancholic voice that added a lot to TFF songs. Especially when singing with Roland, their voices mesh incredibly well. These days he has lost the power he did have and as singers get older their voices do age with them and they tend to have more “bad” vocal days than they used to, especially when they’re touring. I’ve heard some sketchy performances from him and I’ve heard some great ones. I would say the same of Roland, there’s occasions where his vocals have been sketchy and almost cringeworthy, but that’s just what happens when you’ve used your voice to make your living for so long. It starts to degrade. I certainly don’t think Roland is underrated in fact I see more criticism of Curt and admiration of Roland within the TFF fandom than anything else. The same may not be true outside the fandom but I would argue the same is true of any band. It is usually the frontman who will get the praise and attention whilst the other band members, some of whom may have contributed a great deal to the writing of songs, are largely ignored. Whilst I don’t think there is anyone here that would disagree that Roland is the songwriter, driving force, and the better singer, he clearly missed his partner in crime (saying in previous interviews Curt is his muse and he always wrote for him and his voice, even when they weren’t talking) They have an incredible musical chemistry that works for them both and they feel working together brings about something special, otherwise why would they continue to record music and tour when it is clear that their relationship is still complicated and something that they have to work hard to maintain. Pitting one against the other is pointless when they have decided they want to be together and no-one (not even Curt) would disagree that Roland has the superior talent.

Exactly. If you listen to Curt's solo stuff, it's extremely good and he's a strong creative engine, which hasn't always been recognised - he should have been allowed to contribute more. Looks like the record company tried to push Curt out and for a time Roland went with it. Yes Roland has a deep booming voice and good sardonic lyrics, a massive talent, but it is mistaken and too simplistic to say 'Roland is the musical genius'.
@jezzyby475 жыл бұрын
I think Ro was a bit jealous of Curt because Curt was the voice of all the hits, but i think Ro was the main man and wrote most of those hits, so he felt put out by Curt being the 'star' and him not so much. So he did Elemental to prove that he was the main man, and it worked, it's such a brilliant album, but he was very abusive lyrically to Curt on that album, so i agree he should have just apologised about that. He had proved his point, but it has caused upset between them both which still carries on even today. Roland is the real talent in TFF, but Curt is the voice, and they need to realise that but also recognise that it is part of what makes them unique.

Allowing Curt to leave the band in 91...that was a career ending move for these two.

Love them have since i was 13 . Had a night of looking at interviews with them and i’m struck that Roland comes across somewhat negative a lot. Curt seems so much more upbeat. Don’t know what happened between them but it’s a shame,it’s still evident there’s an awkwardness within they’re relationship. After looking at they’re career tonight Curt was as big an influence in the band for me than Roland i always thought it the other way for years ...

They talk down about there past records that made them. i still think there great now. They cheer me up. I understand there emotions are now differant and feel they have the need to go forwood with that, But the old stuff where hits. Doesent mean there new music will be. I also like videos so i can watch them over again. But they dont. Keep singing the hits lads. There is a need for good music.

I don't think they were underrated at all. But the U.S. media in the 90s thought that most bands of the eighties especially the ones with one hit or even two hit wonders, were a joke. Plus, whether you want to accept it or not, it's the U.S. music world that drives pop music. I don't hear anyone saying I need a big music hit in the. ... UK, Italy, Australia... fill in the blank. Doesn't mean it's right, but just how it is. I love eighties music since I grew up listening to it on the radio.

I’m looking for another interview from this time. They discuss the making of Happy Ending more and there are some acoustic versions. Anyone?

The most interesting era of TFF in my opinion. You can tell it was a bit of a growing pains/awkward phase for the band to mature into their late era. Great album though, great songs, and glad they made one more big album statement.

If TFF plan to return, they may focus a lot more on their UK audiences and what their plan of standing within the music world is actually going to be all about. ELAHE was a fantastic album, but the bands lack of effort toward their fans ruined it, and I think they knew that damn rightly and just couldn't be bothered to do anything about it. Come on guys, this is the working hour!

If they released a new record that comprised the best elements of the first 2 albums and got some decent marketing and planning behind them, they could be absolutely huge again. It's time to ditch the sixties melodic vibe and go back to their roots and looking at the covers they've uploaded to utube, I'm guessing this could be the way the new music is heading.
