I have to side with elegoo on separating out the heater. My printer sits in a fairly well-regulated room, temperature wise, and I've got nothing to gain from adding a heater to my printer. I'd imagine roughly half of resin printer users are in a similar boat, whether due to their setup or locale. It just makes sense to separate out that functionality, rather than incorporating the cost into every single printer sold. Elegoo's been the primary force driving down costs in hobbyist resin printing since the Mars 1, and I'd have to imagine a lot of careful cuts and consideration went into being able to put the 4 Ultra out at $400.

That's a fair point... but I have a couple of Australia buddies who have no issues printing in the day, but find falling temperatures a night a big problem. However, I appreciate not everywhere is the same - and I'm a little biased on this particular subject 🤣😂🤣

The lack of a heater is no deal breaker for me. I do all my printing in an unheated garage, so I put my printers in insulated grow boxes with a ceramic heater inside. I was able to print all winter long with temperatures sometimes in the 20s F with no problems. A quick trip to the local hardware will take care of the lack of a handle on the flip lid. I plan on adding a Saturn 4 Ultra to my "factory".

Weirdly the M5sPro is the same resolution (if you look at the pixel size) but has less Z height, so this is actually looking like a good proposition. I've long been a fan of the Anycubic RERF functionality, so to see something similar *finally* showing up on a Elegoo machine is glorious.
@vogman
@vogman 7 ай бұрын
The 12 and 14K issue is a weird one. The 14K improves resolution on the X, maintains it on the Y, I think. The difference on paper isn't worth worry about. However... look at the photos. I've done two 14K printers now. Compare the prints to the 12K's. Maybe it's me, but I swear the 14K's are smoother and just as detailed... the voxel lines are harder to see. That's why I take the photos, so folks can judge for themselves 😁😁😁 And the RERF thing... brilliant idea. Every printer should have one... that works 😁

It does seem to me that the tilt release is more about making the print less likely to fail due to sticking rather than it being all about speed. But Prusa's SL1S SPEED printer featured tilting and the marketing was HEAVILY about how much faster it was. I feel this is more of a marketing focusing on the wrong aspect rather than it being outright silly. I would love to see a comparison on if the tilting mechanism means I don't have to have as many supports on a floating model, because the forces exerted on the model are not as extreme. This would be huge.

For what it's worth - The drip tray is there to keep you from spilling resin down in to the gap required for the tilt mechanism to work... So not a waste of time or money compared to what would happen if resin spilled inside the machine. I agree it could be better made though I'm sure someone will create a model to be printed from more resilient materials.
@vogman
@vogman 3 ай бұрын
I get that, I really do. I kind of think of it as a safety net for Elegoo. As is, "There's a problem... what if the resin gets into the mechanism?" and the answer was, "Oh, just cover everything up with a cheap bit of plastic." That worries me. I think maybe a little more thought was necessary rather than relying on something that clearly won't last all that long. This is a wonderfully innovative design and I think it could be the start of something exciting. But for me it feels like they've designed a teleportation device and they're housing it under a bit of old tarp 😁

The speed issues are odd Vog. I find when I slice the exact same file on a modified Saturn profile and the Saturn 4 Ultra profile, it just about halves the time. And the makes since because the Ultra 4 completes a cycle in 5.5 seconds opposed to approximately 10 seconds on the original Saturn. To make 150mm/hour I'd have to use a massive layer height, but still the tilt is giving significant saving in time. Also saves me from tuning and cleaning the fails from tuning stuff like retraction speeds.

I happened to be looking for a reasonably priced resin printer when the Saturn 4 was launched so I more or less ordered one on a whim. It will replace my past-end-of-life Form 2, and it was funny to see Formlabs launch the Form 4 literally 2 days later, which is now an MSLA machine that still costs 10x as much. Anyway I will see how I go and whether I need a heater, but good to know the basic print quality should be pretty good, even if one of the first things you need to print is a handle to glue on the stupid hood.

I had a Formlabs Form 1+. It was similar in that it utilized a tilt feature on the resin tray to “peel” the print from the bedplate. Over time, I noticed the constant peel to one side would throw off the bedplate leveling. In addition, sometimes, the tilt wasn’t “deep” enough to execute the peel. Meaning, the bedplate would twist and deflect over the entire resin tray tilt cycle. It would never actually peel and release. This would always result in failed prints. Do you anticipate these issues with the Saturn 4 Ultra?

Good video But The maximum declared speed is always theoretical and for layers of a certain thickness. At best 0.10mm but some brands (including Elegoo) I assume imply 0.20/0.25mm layer to declare the maximum speed Only Anycubic explicitly declares the layer (which is 0.10mm) and says 10.5cm/hour (or 2.91s/layer with exposure 1.5-1.9 I suppose) for the M5s Pro and up to 17cm/hour (at 2.12s/layer with high-speed resin and with exposure unknown) for the M7 Pro I don't know if these speeds are truly achievable So you certainly can't use layer 0.05mm to measure the max printing speed in cm/hour In any case, I see that Lychee Slicer 6 for the Saturn 4 Ultra profile provides me with print estimates (I don't have the printer, I just did the simulations) of 9.03cm/hour using layers 0.1mm (at 3.99s/layer with exposure 2.0s) and 4.62cm /hour using 0.05mm (at 3.89s/layer with exposure 2.0s) Is this estimate too optimistic or will it be more or less correct?

Interestingly, they took some features from the original Prusa SL1. That was my first mSLA printer and it had a tilt mechanism, no lifting. It also came with a slop trey that was gross to use 😅. Shame about the heater here, I thought I found my next printer!

Will you be making the top contenders for this kind of printers, aka this printer, Phrozen Revo, Anycubic Photon Mono M5S/PRO, GKTwo, etc? Sounds like they all use the same screen, just differing in the features.

Most of these printers use the same tech, though Elegoo stuck wit the 12K here where the others went 14. I guess the real issue is how well then put this tech to use. My MYPIN TA4-SNR controller died, shows as power off/on but it never cuts the power to the SSR. It's always switched on. Having trouble finding a new TA4-SNR. :( Not been watching much lately and have an original Elegoo Mars. What would you put your own money on at the current moment in time? Speed not important a bigger platform is a must though. Thanks for all your work..

I'm fine with the thing coming without a heating function. Anyone who cares about their health should always have a ventilated enclosure for their resin printer(s), and these are easily heated using cheaper and better options than one of those heater units. Every printer on the market which has an in-built heater is also very expensive, though (and this one would have been too), and to me personally, it's not worth the money. You can get an app-controled thermostat plug and some kind of heating system (heater lamps, ceramic heater etc) for the same money, and you can set and monitor temps from the coach. Also, the vat tipping mechanism has some very solid fundamental principles behind it, so people will figure out to get the most out of it. I'm convinced it's going to be the most important speed innovation of this generation.

5.5s a layer is faster than what I usually get out of my Saturn 3, which is 7.5s. So if the layer time is actually 5.5s that will save a bunch of time. Obviously not 150mm an hour though.
@cenciende9401
@cenciende9401 7 ай бұрын
There's no reason it can't be 5.5s considering exposure is about 2. Should have shown the math in the review which makes 150mm/hr basically impossible unless doing .15 layer heights or something crazy at which point might as well use FDM, silly marketing

Was looking forward to this review, thank you! I ordered myself one as I think it's a better fit than the GK2 for the price, since I'm also in California where a heater really isn't necessary for me. The rest of it seems so similar, I think I like the GK2s plate design more, but I want that tilting vat... And camera if it works lol. Edit: Is this noticeably faster than your gk2 or other 8-14k printers because of the tilt function?

Is the vat actually innovative, given that the Form 1 and 1+ had a tilting vat years ago, as did the Prusa SL1 and Prusa SL1S. Now maybe Elegoo have done a better job than Formlabs, who I believe didn't have a tilting vat in their subsequent models, but I think we need to see how it pans out with this model. I honestly struggle to see where there's any innovation with this model personally. Like many of us, I'd like a heated vat so we don't need to use brew belts, automatic filling, level sensor, vat temperature monitoring with a contactless low res thermal camera or other sensors, replacing the -shitu- chitu firmware for something decent and thus a better print experience (Bambu show how much better it can be having custom firmware over what others are doing), and a slicer that can leverage said better firmware. Providing something like Fujifilm Prescale might be useful too for validating actual bed levelling (as opposed to Z height), but Prescale is super expensive. Heygears seems sort of like the Bambu of SLA, with a somewhat integrated system that's an improvement in the experience, but I don't think we're seeing anything particularly exciting anywhere. Wondering if Bambu are looking to take a lead in this space too; certainly hope so!

Vog man, there is a chance you expirience with the 4 cones being off might not be the printer... The cones v1 is only supposed to be used in the middle of the fep, and printed alone, as printing elsewhere can affect how the cones behave due to uneven fep pull forces. The cones V2 and now V3 avaliable on the table flip foundry discord have walls around the cones so this shouldn't be an issue. The cones v3 also has a dimensional accuracy test which I worked on, it's in beta on the discord server as that is being refined.
@vogman
@vogman 7 ай бұрын
In fairness I did other tests than the cones... I just thought the cones were easier to demonstrate 😁

The tilt release is the most exciting thing ever for me as a Dice Maker because the huge pull forces make the dice elongate in this kinda non-linear way where the closer to the build plate you get, the more elongated it is along the Z axis (so you can't just squish it in the slicer to compensate), this elongation then has to be corrected by sanding the dice while applying force at an angle, very carefully, and even with hundreds of dice made, it's still hard and I can't get them perfect, only prints with a Form 3 come out without this warping, thanks to the tilt release. But seeing the mechanism Elegoo is using, it worries me that the pushing up against the print before pulling down might actually make it worse in a different way. It also worries me that the Tilt Release is marketed exclusively as a fast printing thing, it might just really not help with dimensional accuracy at all. Also It makes me worry that the whole mechanism might wear out and develop some wiggle room, bringing the alignment of the screen with the collimating lenses into play, and causing a loss of detail. This wasn't a worry in the Form printers because of the lack of a screen, obviously.
@vogman

I have the same concerns about the tilt mechanism. Usually anything that moves a lots, wears a lot. But it's way too early to say anything about this yet. It's a great feature and I applaud Elegoo for it 😁

I've owned machines with similar mechanisms. They're fine when they work but moving parts introduce another possible point of failure. The machines I have eventually had issues returning the platform back to zero/home consistently. In both cases this mechanism was the first thing to fail. Personally I'm not a fan, but maybe elegoo has a more reliable solution.

i recently got he saturn 3 utlta and was supper bummed I didnt expect a new version a month and a half later. honestly even though it has some really nice quality of life improvements like the newer hopefully better poor spouts and flip up lid I am happy with the 3 ultra now. i feelthey missed the mark not having any sort of heater weather It was chamber or vat and I didnt see a spot to run a power cable to have a addon heater. I'm sad to see they didnt go a deeper vat and a skirt for build plate like the gk two that way you dont get resin ontop of he build plate. im curious about the tilt to release if it will distort the print making ti tsightly taller up front vs back. im sure it will help reduce the suction forces though
