Nice video. As a retired Medic/Firefighter, I couldn’t agree more. A medical kit is one of the first things any overlander should have on hand. I’ve got a small Trauma Bag in the Jeep at all times.

Hi Sean - thanks for your comments! Any items you'd recommend for a kit?

Crazy Empty Nest Well, I’ve got a seatbelt cutter, and a spring loaded punch that’s designed to break an automotive window very easily, if a victim is trapped in a vehicle. (and depending on someone’s level of training) I also carry a set of Esophageal Airways, and a folding wire splint in my bag. Sadly, I happen on to highway accidents now and then. They’ve come in handy. Especially the splint. It’s easy to bend into any shape that’s needed. As you know, the only thing worse than coming up on an accident, is not having the gear and the knowledge to help.

@@rael6_4wd - Great recommendations! We've got a punch inside the Jeep but not in the med kit. We forgot a splint in our video, we usually have a SAM splint in our kit too.

Nice video, fan of keeping a hemorrhage-control kit at arms length when driving. One thing I would suggest is to ditch the superglue - in the back country, you do not want to semi-permanently seal a wound (suture, chemically, etc.) because if you weren't able to completely seal the wound, then you've trapped infection in a sealed wound. Better is to use steri-strips (or learn how to use tape to act like steri-strips) along with transparent film dressings to go over. That way you can still clean and assess, you still have visibility on the wound so you see signs of infection and the film dressing is a moist "second skin" that helps keep it clean and sterile.

Hi Jonathan - thanks for this great tip. Honestly, we've never had to use the super glue and I'm glad you mention trapped infection. Great point on the steri-strips! What do you think of a surgical stapler? We have one but don't put it in our overlanding kit?
@jonathanbrock2478

@@CrazyEmptyNest First, awesome response, love you guys already, subbed. To be succinct but you do you - I would personally never carry a surgical stapler for the same reason that I wouldn't carry superglue of any type - one is a mechanical sealant, the other chemical but the end result is that over the course of 24-96 hours your ability to monitor and intervene in case of infection is severely limited without inflicting additional injury (re: cutting). Can think of no reason to not use the steri-strips + transparent film dressing (the unsung hero of the story). You mentioned a NOLS WFR class, I'd say that the NOLS Wilderness First Aid course is an excellent introduction to wound management in the backcountry and is usually only a weekend of time. The basic point to me is that if someone wants to put superglue on a cut or whatnot in the frontcounty, I couldn't care less - if it really becomes bad then theoretically EMS and a hospital is a phone call away. However in the back country a truly serious wound requires regular (not really constant) checkup and cleansing as needed. A good initial cleansing and steri-strips (or tape if you know how) plus a transparent film dressing gives you the ability to check all of the boxes without adding additional complications or doing something that can't be undone if you need to reclean.

@@jonathanbrock2478 - wow, such great advice! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom! We'll be grabbing some steri-strips + transparent film dressing for the kit. Any other items you'd add?
@jonathanbrock2478

@@CrazyEmptyNest If you're going to carry steri-strips, you may want to also grab some Benzoin Tincture - it helps anchor them. It seemed like you had a good mix of medicines, I don't remember if you are carrying Imodium or some other anti-diarrhea medicine but that can be crucial as diarrhea can lead to dehydration and in the back country that can kill. I personally toss a few things in my med kit even if I have them somewhere else just to be able to grab one bag and go. Items like this include a headlamp and some chemlights, trauma shears, and more gloves. I'm sure you have items in your kits that can likewise be duplicated. I also ensure that I care 2-3 triangle bandages, which are so versatile and inexpensive (around $5ish for 12) that I toss them in by habit at this point. Same with 2 SAM splints (or the like - I have SAM and some made by Dynarex) (I tend to prefer to get them flat-folded instead of rolled as they store better for me). They weigh a few ounces so a thru-hiker or ultralighter may not want to carry them, but I see no reason why they shouldn't be in a vehicle kit or if you're already carrying more than 25 or 30 lbs between two people for a couple of days. Yes, you can improvise splints, just like you can improvise tourniquets but it is not ideal in either case. I'm also a fan of self adhesive "sports tape" that basically grips itself. Likewise some simple ACE bandages, give me some 4x4 gauze pads and an ACE bandage or sports tape and I have a makeshift pressure bandage. The big tradeoff to all of this is on the minus column - cost, weight, bulk. On the plus is coverage. You need to decide what makes sense for you in your situation or situations - my vehicle kit is not the same as my day hiking kit which is not the same as my 2 night camping kit - and the latter two differ if I"m alone or with other people.
