Here are some prime examples of why you don't drive on ice without being sure that it is safe. Keep in mind that ice thickness can vary greatly over the surface of a lake. By safe people!

Z STRODE Legally they have to pull the vehicle out. There are HUGE fines that would be laid against someone if they were caught leaving a vehicle sunken in a lake.....likely even jail time. Some may say that it isn't that big of a risk....but it is huge. If your vehicle sinks, you will be caught eventually.

I’m an adventure seeker. I love taking risks and challenges, especially driving on frozen lakes. I push my luck when driving on thin ice. I get thrills and chills when I hear the ice cracking under my vehicle. Then it gets more exciting when my vehicle goes through the ice and slowly fills with cold water and finally sinks below the ice. To avoid mayhem like me get Allstate.

the biggest problem with the group trying to pull out the blue ford, is not the running start, or the slack, it's actually the fact that they are using ROPE along with the chain and it's the ROPE that keeps snapping. As far as I'[m concerning these people where making a show of helping when they where really trying to make the guys truck sink.

I have never been around icy lakes but even though I have no experience with it,common sense tells me that it is not a good idea to drive a perfectly good vehicle out on ice of unknown thickness. And spinning the tires will only produce friction thus melting the ice and making it more slick and reducing traction.

I have drove on the ice several times. These people are just dumb. None of those conditions were remotely close to being safe. The closest questionable one was the blue truck and you can clearly see a visible underwater current thinning the ice. There is such a thing called safe ice. People choose not to be safe. Driving heavy equipment through running water through a river!? Driving on the lake at all with open water everywhere?! Just madness.

Sometimes people make a healthy living on safe ice. Why are there so many yellow bellies anymore. And sometimes life is the roll of the dice. A lot of southner's ancestors would be ashamed of what has become of their bloodline. We used to raise sheep and goats up in some of the highest the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. There where some brutal winters back then and took a chance of dying every winter. Kids these days.

When a pickup truck is trying to pull anything out of being stuck the farmers tractor rule should be used. Turn trucks around hooking the tow line to the back frame hitch while facing the vehicle you are pulling. Puts all the pull weight on the back axles of the pulling truck. Tractors pull front end up hooking to back of tractor turning tractor backwards keeps front down on tractors with pulling weight on rear tractor tires. SEMPER FIDELIS

The chain should have been lower...around the axel. The other alternative was to put a heavy 8 foot pole upright under the chain on an angle facing the truck and close to the ball hitch. That way when you pull you slowly lift the truck up out of the hole. The way they were trying was breaking the chain because the truck had to break thick ice going backwards before it would come out....impossible task.

Just one thing here.......I've worked for a few different companies doing the same types of jobs and they had their own ways of doing things. Whenever someone tells me that something is right because it is how they did it at work......I start to question their intelligence. Sometimes there isn't always a 'correct' way. Many times it is the person that doesn't follow what the norm is that saves many lives by using quick instincts. Not that many of these vehicles were saved by any quick instincts.....

A guy I know has a jeep he uses for ice fishing. It's not street legal, only for the ice. The only thing different about it is about 75 ft of rope tied to the bumper with a buoy on it so when it goes through the ice he can find it again in the spring. He's retrieve it twice now. Takes about an hour to get it running again. Of course he's completely insane but then that helps.

That’s not entirely true, there are quite a few insurance providers that do cover vehicles that fall through ice, also, several states will allow the owner to make its own arrangements to retrieve the vehicle in a timely matter, some states will give the owner a few days or so before stepping in and retrieving it for them this slapping them with the bill, the only fines the owner might receive is if there’s any pollutants leaking from the vehicle.
