Back in the day (early 2010s) as a former cashier watching over the slot machines to make sure minors don't rush there to play was always a pain in the ass and sometime on my arm, when some would try to physically stop me from shutting the machine. It was good to get rid of it.

Veikkaus also hires underage folks to specifically test different establishments that they're actually monitoring that minors don't gamble. For a small business, having a Veikkaus machine is a double edged sword and potentially more pain than it's worth.

The 2017 fusing of RAY, Toto and Veikkaus was chaotic. My father told me that many of his colleagues and him had been given two choices. Either get your salary for a year without work, after that you dont work with veikkaus, or leave at the company on the spot. My father also told that due to the ceo of veikkaus giving fake numbers and wanting to discontinue the monopoly, he needed to work to fix the problems in his new job, over 700 hours. Simply said veikkaus has been and still is a dumster fire inside.

To be fair, the membership requirement has shown quite effective at least our shop. We used to have 3 slot machines, but after that one of them was taken away since they didn't "sell" that well any more and recently there have been talks about giving the rest of them back to veikkaus also since they still don't sell that good. Also I would predict that since scratchers will need that same membership card around half way next year that they will not be sold nearly as much since those are usually more impulse buy for many customers.

For us the number of machines dropped from 6 to 4. Our shop is less than 400 square meters in size. It's funny..they say that they won't put more of these machines to places where there's more tendency for addiction. Our customers are really geared towards addictions and shop of this size usually have only one or two machines. They've introduced restrictions to the availability of these games: These machines work from 9 am to 9 pm. Because of this many of our customers have moved from slot machines to scratchers that can be sold at any times and they are spending a lot more money. Interesting to see the results of this membership card requirement!

This was also the case in Norway, until the slot machine ban in 2007. Those machines were everywhere, and pretty much every grocery store, gas station, kiosk or public area had at least one machine. Unlike Finland, where the machines are owned by the national lottery, in Norway, the machines were placed by the various national charity actors, like Red Cross. This was eventually cracked down on, and Norsk Tipping (the Norwegian equivalent of Veikkaus) got a monopoly on national gambling, where the limits are much stricter on how much money a person can spend every day.

This was a really important & interesting topic, I see that you have credited Veikkauskratia (a book) in the sources, I would also highly recommend to check it out, that was really eye-opening for me. I feel like the situation with Veikkaus is pretty much a plus-miinus-nolla (all positives and negatives equal to zero), literally Veikkaus is the one funding the companies which are supposed to help people with a gambling addiction. Finland is one of the only countries with gambling culture rooted so deeply into everyday life and I don't think we should be playing with people's money and health in the 21st century anymore. A really good video overall, thank you!

Veikkaus has operative leadership like any other company. But they also have a board of directors, and many of the board members are current or ex parliament members. The board positions are given as rewards to politicians, because they pay very well. Starting from 500€ for every short board meeting. This is just one of the reasons why my answer is "LOL" every time when someone asks if Veikkaus monopoly will be discontinued in Finland.

Once they removed the last mechanical slot machines, my gambling took a nose dive. Couldn't stand the big screen with endless animations and pointless "free rounds". After they started demanding identification to play, it stopped altogether. EDIT: Back in the day at around 13-15 years old, I often dropped a few coins on some Mansikka. Can't remember any situation where anyone would've came to stop me, as an under aged. I learned slot machines from my uncle at under 10 years old and we sometimes went to play together when on a summer break.

What keeps him going is the addiction and it's scary how it works: Right after he says how much he's spent, he proudly exclaimed "but I've won like 3000€ in total". I'm underage so I can't use the slot machines (until in August in 2023), but I have technically played a bit. With my dad. He doesn't play the slot machines often at all, only if he has some loose change he doesn't need. But back when I was a bit younger, my dad would play the game itself and I would watch and then he'd sometimes let me press a button. And usually we didn't win much, so it often went into buying little treats like ice creams for us or something.

I'm Australian (which is the country with the biggest gambling numbers in that graph you mentioned!) and from my perspective, the slot machines in supermarkets seemed like kind of a good idea to reduce gambling. Because in Australia they're only in clubs and the clubs do all kinds of tricks to make sure that addicts don't leave (free drinks, artificial light so they don't know what time it is, no clocks etc.) Whereas if you're just standing up in an s-market you're pretty constantly reminded that time is passing and you aren't exactly cloistered away from the everyday world, nor is it very comfortable to stay there for ages. And you probably also feel very pathetic. So I feel like it'd disincentivise gambling, but I don't have stats on that.

Regarding Finnish people do not invest much, I think that is mainly taxation issue. In many other countries there is a system of tax-free investment, whether it is by keeping shares long enough or by year amount of profits. Not in Finland, you are taxed all the time and by significant 30-34%. I was very interested to start investing when I moved here but if you consider risk, fees and taxes, the return is only interesting when you have a lot of money. I think this should be changed to encourage people to invest and save more.
@luukas2660
@luukas2660 Жыл бұрын
You only pay taxes on profits and you can actually deduct losses from income taxation. Also you're not constantly taxed, only when you liquidate your investment.
@bassmanjura
@bassmanjura Жыл бұрын
@@luukas2660 of course it is from the profit ''only'' and the loss deduction is great, but for example in Slovakia, if you liquidate your investment (shares, bonds etc) after at least 1 year of owning it, you don't pay taxes on the profit, because you are not considered as broker. Also, if you own a house more than 5 years and you sell it with profit, it is tax free. In Germany, I think there is a certain threshold till your profits are tax free. Here in Finland, you can own the shares for 20 years or house for 20 years and it does not make any difference, hence people are not motivated enough to take the risk and bother with investing. That is not a good strategy by Finnish government, you want people to invest and save and not be utterly dependent on government

Close but not quite. You get taxed when you sell the assets, and only if the sale generates i think it was 1000€ in a year so if you stay under that there's no tax Also you will get lower tax rate on investments if you hold them x ammount of time. Sure it's not as forgiving than the others, but its not unreasonable

I don't know how this compares to other countries and companies, but it's not that long ago when there were no age restrictions here at all. I happened to turn 15 at the time they changed the age of gambling to 15 as well (about the year 2005). Can't remind if it was sports betting, slot machines or both. Anyways shop clerks and kiosk owners etc were required to verify the age of potentially underaged players...something they were not willing, qualified or interested to do. Nowadays Veikkaus is stricter via their player and age authentication (age of being able to gamble being 18) also encouraging people to gamble online. Interesting topic anyways

As a Finnish man I hate how they changed the slot machines to require a Veikkaus app profile or some shit. And you will have to login every time you want to play. This pisses me off because I only used to gamble for one reason. It goes like this. I buy something with cash, and I have these annoying 20 and 50 cent coins now. I never use these coins because it's awkward to pay with little coins and count them while other people wait in the line and the cashier looks at you judging how slow you can take them out of your wallet. So I would put the change coins into the slot machine. Worst case scenario, I lose them all, got like a minute of fun and excitement, and I don't have to carry them around. Best case scenario, I win sometimes and get to cash out in whole one or two Euro coins. These I can use to pay for like weekend beer, lunch, or parking. Plus I feel like a winner if I do win. But now all that convenience is ruined. I'd have to set up some VeikkausTM account and connect my credit card to the account. And every time I go to play I would have to use my bank ID to verify my login etc. Turns a quick dumping of 70 cents into a whole operation.

Why would Veikkaus be allowed in naboring countries your allied with? Veikkaus would be no different to unibet or betson in Norway and Sweden as we have our own "Veikkaus" to combat foreign gaming companies.

Gambling collaterals aren't limited only for ludopath people Constant doses of dopamine implies that braincells can't produce enough by themselves without the repeated reinforcement in a routine Or in other words, people would tend to feeling more disaffected about the stimulous in the environment... ergo, would be a potential risk for depressed people

"Nousevissa pelivideoissa." Niin no, pelaamistahan se on uhkapelaaminenkin. Euron tappio ei tunnu missään, kympin tappio harmittaa. Miten joku onnistuu pelaamaan 500€ "rajan" yhden päivän aikana on jo aikamoinen mysteeri. Saati sitten miksi "raja" on ylipäätään laitettu noin korkealle. Something something valaat ja muut.

I think that without slot machines finns would spend more money online and therefore more money pouring out to foreign casinos. But i still dont support the addictive features of slot machines. I think that the foreign casinos are really the bad ones. Veikkaus atleast redistributes the profts back to good causes.

personally don't use veikkaus that much other than putting couple euros to eurojackpot when it's over 50million lol never gonna win but 6euros every couple weeks is not that much so doesn't bother me. and at least when i have been in the shops recently, have not seen that many poeple use the slot machines, but obviously someone uses them because they are still there but i think less than like 8years ago, after school i saw bunch of old dudes and couple teenagers always using them
