This was also the case in Norway, until the slot machine ban in 2007. Those machines were everywhere, and pretty much every grocery store, gas station, kiosk or public area had at least one machine. Unlike Finland, where the machines are owned by the national lottery, in Norway, the machines were placed by the various national charity actors, like Red Cross. This was eventually cracked down on, and Norsk Tipping (the Norwegian equivalent of Veikkaus) got a monopoly on national gambling, where the limits are much stricter on how much money a person can spend every day.

I'm Australian (which is the country with the biggest gambling numbers in that graph you mentioned!) and from my perspective, the slot machines in supermarkets seemed like kind of a good idea to reduce gambling. Because in Australia they're only in clubs and the clubs do all kinds of tricks to make sure that addicts don't leave (free drinks, artificial light so they don't know what time it is, no clocks etc.) Whereas if you're just standing up in an s-market you're pretty constantly reminded that time is passing and you aren't exactly cloistered away from the everyday world, nor is it very comfortable to stay there for ages. And you probably also feel very pathetic. So I feel like it'd disincentivise gambling, but I don't have stats on that.

Regarding Finnish people do not invest much, I think that is mainly taxation issue. In many other countries there is a system of tax-free investment, whether it is by keeping shares long enough or by year amount of profits. Not in Finland, you are taxed all the time and by significant 30-34%. I was very interested to start investing when I moved here but if you consider risk, fees and taxes, the return is only interesting when you have a lot of money. I think this should be changed to encourage people to invest and save more.
@luukas2660 Жыл бұрын
You only pay taxes on profits and you can actually deduct losses from income taxation. Also you're not constantly taxed, only when you liquidate your investment.
@bassmanjura Жыл бұрын
@@luukas2660 of course it is from the profit ''only'' and the loss deduction is great, but for example in Slovakia, if you liquidate your investment (shares, bonds etc) after at least 1 year of owning it, you don't pay taxes on the profit, because you are not considered as broker. Also, if you own a house more than 5 years and you sell it with profit, it is tax free. In Germany, I think there is a certain threshold till your profits are tax free. Here in Finland, you can own the shares for 20 years or house for 20 years and it does not make any difference, hence people are not motivated enough to take the risk and bother with investing. That is not a good strategy by Finnish government, you want people to invest and save and not be utterly dependent on government

Close but not quite. You get taxed when you sell the assets, and only if the sale generates i think it was 1000€ in a year so if you stay under that there's no tax Also you will get lower tax rate on investments if you hold them x ammount of time. Sure it's not as forgiving than the others, but its not unreasonable

I don't know how this compares to other countries and companies, but it's not that long ago when there were no age restrictions here at all. I happened to turn 15 at the time they changed the age of gambling to 15 as well (about the year 2005). Can't remind if it was sports betting, slot machines or both. Anyways shop clerks and kiosk owners etc were required to verify the age of potentially underaged players...something they were not willing, qualified or interested to do. As a Finnish man I hate how they changed the slot machines to require a Veikkaus app profile or some shit. And you will have to login every time you want to play. This pisses me off because I only used to gamble for one reason. It goes like this. I buy something with cash, and I have these annoying 20 and 50 cent coins now. I never use these coins because it's awkward to pay with little coins and count them while other people wait in the line and the cashier looks at you judging how slow you can take them out of your wallet. So I would put the change coins into the slot machine. Worst case scenario, I lose them all, got like a minute of fun and excitement, and I don't have to carry them around. Best case scenario, I win sometimes and get to cash out in whole one or two Euro coins. These I can use to pay for like weekend beer, lunch, or parking. Plus I feel like a winner if I do win. But now all that convenience is ruined. I'd have to set up some VeikkausTM account and connect my credit card to the account. And every time I go to play I would have to use my bank ID to verify my login etc. Turns a quick dumping of 70 cents into a whole operation.

I think that without slot machines finns would spend more money online and therefore more money pouring out to foreign casinos. But i still dont support the addictive features of slot machines. I think that the foreign casinos are really the bad ones. Veikkaus atleast redistributes the profts back to good causes.

The veikkaus card was just added to make sure that no one wins and everyone is playing with the 80-90% money return policy 😂

personally don't use veikkaus that much other than putting couple euros to eurojackpot when it's over 50million lol never gonna win but 6euros every couple weeks is not that much so doesn't bother me. and at least when i have been in the shops recently, have not seen that many poeple use the slot machines, but obviously someone uses them because they are still there but i think less than like 8years ago, after school i saw bunch of old dudes and couple teenagers always using them

Monopolies like this should be illegal.

@@redgrengrumbholdt2671 It is. There are no physical casinos other than Veikkaus.

@@yeahnoway111 Also there are physical casinos that hold other business casino brands as well. There just aren't any of them in supermarkets for example.
