Then, Maharaja Ranjit came to light and led the Sikh Kingdoms to form 1 United Kingdom that became a empire within the decade. The only difference is that back then it was a fight against Afghan and Mughal rule, now it's a fight against the Indian government. Guru Nanak once said that the Hindus have lost their way, today it is the Indians that has lost their way. This forming of a independent Sikh government is part of Guru Gobind Singhs hukam, Miri Piri, which is Spiritual Authority and Temporaral Authority (Governments, Laws, etc).
