For a long time, Andryukha had accumulated many unfulfilled desires and he decided to go personally to Santa Claus in Veliky Ustyug, Vologda region.
The city is located on the left bank of the Sukhona River, just above its confluence with the Yug River, where the Northern Dvina River, famous in the North, originates. As a city, Ustyug was first mentioned in chronicles in 1207, and its ancestor is considered to be the city of Gleden, which was devastated by the raids of bad people.
Located at the crossroads of two important trade routes (to the White Sea and to Siberia), the city attracted Russian and foreign merchants.
The merchant class flourished here. The Prokopyevskaya fair, in honor of St. Procopius of Ustyug, was popular. It is held in the summer and to this day. With the development of trade, crafts also developed in the city. Especially artistic crafts and icon painting. For example, there is an enterprise “Northern Chern”, where to this day they preserve and develop the ancient Russian jewelry art of silver niello.
A great contribution to the development of this craft was made by Evstafy Pavlovich Shilnikovsky (1890 -1980), the head of the artel and then the Northern Chern factory, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, honorary resident of Veliky Ustyug.
Blackening on silver has been known since the times of Kievan Rus. Black, a special alloy that looks like a dark gray stone, is ground into powder, moistened and applied in an even layer to the surface with an engraved design. The product is calcined over a fire and the niello, melting, fills all the recesses. And it turns out beautiful.
Veliky Ustyug was one of the spiritual centers of Rus', and then Russia. The number of temples and churches per capita is simply amazing. What a beauty! Holy places! I remember the words of A.S. Pushkin ""Here is the Russian spirit, here it smells of Russia...".
I would like to mention Saint Procopius of Ustyug, revered in Ustyug. He foresaw the fall of a huge meteorite on the city within a week, sitting on a stone, he prayed to save the city from this disaster, warned people and averted trouble from the city - the meteorite fell 20 km from Ustyug. People still find its wreckage. A church on the banks of the Sukhona, where his relics and the stone on which he prayed, and a fair are located, are named in honor of the saint.
Having visited the Strelka (the confluence of the Sukhona and Yug rivers) - an epic place, Andryukha went through fields and meadows to the Trinity-Gledensky Monastery.
This is all that remains of the city of Gleden, once founded by Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest in 1178, which was burned and devastated as a result of internecine princely wars. The name of the city comes from the word look, since it was located on a high hill on the Yug River and had a good view around it.
Having purchased an entrance ticket and an optional audio guide (I recommend), we go to the inner chambers of the Trinity Cathedral to listen to the history and contemplate the beauty of the five-tiered iconostasis, which was made by local craftsmen.
After the monastery we go to a font nearby, where locals take the illuminated water and immerse themselves in it. Eh, water - ice, invigorates!)
And here is one of the attractions of Ustyug - the rinsing beds. Here women wash and rinse clothes. That’s right, movement is life!) Otherwise we’re used to washing machines!))))
On the river you can see an interesting phenomenon - dachas on the water - this is romanticism!)
Peter the Great visited Veliky Ustyug 3 times on his way to Arkhangelsk.
Semyon Dezhnev, Russian traveler and explorer, sailor and explorer of Northern and Eastern Siberia, Yakut ataman and fur trader. He was the first navigator to navigate the Strait, which separated Asia from North America and Chukotka from Alaska in 1648, 80 years before Vitus Bereng.
The city sacredly honors the memory of the Great Patriotic War. 11 thousand Ustyun residents did not return from the war, 11 became heroes of the Soviet Union, 2 were full holders of the Order of Glory. Participants in the war can be found on the Internet on the pages of the Immortal Regiment.
Despite the small size of the city, there are places to go to study and receive secondary vocational education.
(Multidisciplinary college, medical college, river school, teacher training college).
Where do people work? - you ask.
This is a dairy, bakery, railway, brewery, distillery, medicine, etc.
Much attention is paid to sports in Ustyug. There is the Moroz Arena, where hockey players and figure skaters train. Swimming pool where swimming and water aerobics are practiced. Football, volleyball, handball, fitness, gyms, etc.
Guys playing Russian folk instruments perform on the embankment - it's great!
There is also a monument to Madame Broshkina, a native of the city!)
