The Mainline Electric Unit (MEMU) are electric multiple unit trains that serve short and medium distance routes in India as compared to normal EMU trains (local trains) that connect urban and suburban areas. In the 1990 Indian railway built MEMU that had 10 feet 8 inch wide coach. The service started on Asansole-adra section on 15 July 1995 and Kharagpur-Tata section on 22 July 1995. The first 20 coach MEMU run between Surat to Virar in 2017. In 2018 Integral Coach Factory (ICF) launched new MEMU capable to operate at 110-130 km/h.
But now ICF has launched new three-phase Modern MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit). This three-phase MEMU train consists of eight coaches. The maximum speed of this new MEMU is 110 kmph. This train is energy-efficient and has superior braking performance.
The train has stainless steel flip-free floor, bench-type cushioned seats, double-leaf sliding doors and LED lighting. It has aerodynamically shaped stainless steel front end to reduced air resistance. It also has CCTV surveillance system and GPS based passenger information system. Its Ergonomic Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) drive desk provides better view and easy operation.
