Great videos Clint! I’m really enjoying the Aussie perspective on the build as it’s been a long term dream of mine since meeting Duane at Oshkosh 25 years ago. Keep them going as they are greatly enjoyed and appreciated. Cheers.

Don’t worry about spending time making things fit. That’s where the majority of the build takes place for all of us

Thanks. Trying to speed through it without getting it perfect. The only problem is not knowing what's acceptable and whats not.

Great job, love the details. I bought my velocity, didn’t build it. Love seeing what all went into getting it together.

There's only 3 or 4 velocitys in Australia, 1 or 2 fully complete so buying is a little tough, unless it was an import.

@@AusVelocity There not all that common in the US either see them at Oshkosh and sun and fun but I never see one at my airport. I don't know why they are slick airplanes can't wait to see the performance of the Honda Turbo engine.
@AusVelocity2 жыл бұрын
@@Mike-01234 I think the main benefit will be the turbo. Most velocity SE's have a 180Hp naturally aspirated. The naturally aspirated io-360 would be producing around 126 HP max at 8000ft. The turbo honda should sustain 180 HP or a bit less at cruise rpm.
@electricaviationchannelvid78632 жыл бұрын
@@AusVelocity So why not supercharge it? Turbo is obsolete...lots of heat problem...hard to regulate...you can do electric supercharger...
@AusVelocity2 жыл бұрын
@@electricaviationchannelvid7863 I know old style supercharging isn't suitable, I've seen some people playing around with electric supercharges but I know stuff all about them. While I like to sail close to the wind with doing new things, I also have to convince my airworthy inspectors that were not doing anything too new or risky. I'm not entirely sure he'll let me fly over populated areas with the Viking engine let alone with a modified version of it. I'm going to have stay with the Viking system until we are well and truly out of the flight testing woods. Thanks for the suggestion though, If you have any more suggestions, I'm keen to discuss anything.

Did all the epoxy/adhesives/glass fiber come with the kit? Did you have the option of sourcing these materials locally?
@AusVelocity2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pierre, The kit did come with all the glass, epoxy and adhesives that the instructions required. It comes with 3 different types of glass weave, 2 different epoxies and a few different types of adhesives. I wouldn't recommend using something that they didn't supply. Before I bought the kit, I asked the factory about this and they just said it comes with everything needed to build the kit. (except engine, avionics, electrics, upholstery and prop). Something that the kit didn't come with was peel ply. The instructions haven't called for it yet but I'm betting it's very useful later on. I'm about to source some this week, not too expensive I expect. Thanks for the Question.
@sayithigher2 жыл бұрын
@@AusVelocity OK thanks for the info. I use peelply very often. Not too expensive where I live. (about 3.50 USD per sq. meter)

I've built 2 planes and the Velocity XL will be the next one. I really like the detail you are providing on the build. Did you ask Velocity about the trailing edge? It that "normal" Thanks!
@AusVelocity2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yes called velocity and talked to Duane about it. He said it's no big deal and it happens sometimes and that I'll need to find a way to prop up or weight down the wing while the trailing edge is held level. Once the whole wing is glassed top and bottom then it becomes very rigid and is extremely hard to correct.
@Alumni604210 ай бұрын
The foam straightness of the trailing edge from the factory is not important. It can be corrected using a micro slurry and your triaxel. Just extended the layup a quarter inch. Then sand using a long block and making it perfectly straight. And if it's not perfect you can always use a little filler on top. And I mean little; you don't want your ailerons to be heavy.

@@AusVelocity that's not too bad considering you are building a plane
@RahulPatel-r4r2 ай бұрын
To my understanding Burt Rutan put twist into the wing intentionally. Please be careful you might not want to remove it.
@AusVelocity2 ай бұрын
You're probably right about that. It's usually for the initial stall location on the wing but since the wing is not designed to ever stall, it's probably not for that reason. The best I can do is just follow the guidance of the factory and the manual. The manual wants both wings straight so I'll run with that. I'm about half way through the canard wing, that looks nice and straight and I'll make a video on that soon, time permitting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Now I see why they charge $19250 for fast build wings laying fiberglass isn't easy getting it just right by someone who never done it before is a bit risky I wonder what they charge if you mess it up and have to get entire new foam core start over. It's not impossible almost worth practicing on some other foam cores first. I'm surprised they use a wood spar why not carbon fiber spar like the Extra 300.
@AusVelocity2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The spar is fibreglass, looks wood but it's not. The spar is made with foam in the middle as well. The fast build option is just to save time, some people value their time more than the company's time to build it. First time builders will go very slow compared to the factory with experience and jigs ready to go speed up the process. I get the whole risk thing, the glassing isn't the hard bit, it's probably cutting the foam and getting it ready for glass is the hard bit. Foam and filler is easy to sand but time consuming to get it looking good.
@dbhyslop2 жыл бұрын
Some people will do a week or two of builders assist at the factory before having the kit shipped. I think it’s cheaper than the fast build wings, but you basically get to do them in the factory jigs with a factory technician.
@AusVelocity2 жыл бұрын
@@dbhyslop If you could make it to the factory I'd highly recommend it. That way you can get answers for the million stupid questions that the new builder will have. That, and they can show you the basics and check your work until you're confident to go it alone. While I have asked the factory for some help on the important stuff, I've enjoyed studying the problems and thinking up creative ways of solving them. I consider it part of my training as a builder. A lot slower this way but I feel like I'm getting better at problem solving (and reinventing wheels). Saying that, the instructions give you a literal step by step guide to building the whole plane, the challenge is transferring those words to actions that end with the desired results.

Please come up with a less annoying transition between subjects. I have no idea what those cartoon characters are, but they are barely tolerable. Don't assume your audience is of your generation or demographic. Otherwise, interesting story. I am dreaming at this stage, of a Velocity Twin. I am pretty sure I will have to either buy one finished or pay someone to build mine as I am 71 and don't want to spend a couple years in the shop when I would rather be flying.
@AusVelocity2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. I'll try something else next time. Velocities do come up for sale every now and then but you'll have to be quick, the v-twin is very hard to find unless you build it at the factory. Hope you find something.
