Building a Dream Bike on a Budget - Klein Quantum Purple Haze

A Klein Quantum "purple haze" updatet with Carbon Weels, the Shimano 105 R7000 Groupset and many new lightweight parts.
Costs:
Second Hand Bike complete 700.- Euros
Second Hand Wheelset 250.- Euros
All new Parts 1500.- Euros
Minus sold parts:
Shimano Groupset 115. Euros
Wheelset (Chris King) 650. Euros
Total= 1685.- Euros
I'm not a pro mechanic so some things are not perfectly executed, but you get the idea.

Two years ago I was able to find the same Klein with the same paint and 105 groupset that had been in storage since it was purchased. The lady only rode it twice. Her husband said the stiffness of the frame scarred her. The dropouts still had all the paint on them. Best $750.00 I ever spent.

I ride alone so it would be a very expensive thing for me to do just to have a cool build for no one to see 😂

Top tip: use a hairdryer to remove vinyl stickers! The heat softens the sticker and glue and makes it super easy to remove. Way easier than scraping them off!

exactly. I used a heat gun set it on low and blow at the stickers like 15 sec. and than took them off, easely

@@AngryApple we are talking about the sticker removal first, not the adhesive removal, thats usually best done best by a citrus glue remover or light solvent/isopropyl alcohol depending old how the glue is. I done this this on bikes and cars for decades

Hey Christopher, I am upgrading my Klein Q Pro Carbon and was going with HED Ardennes wheels (25mm outside width), how was the fit / clearance on your Quantum Pro?

@@matthewmiklos4381 I found it depends on the tires, specifically the front tire, you are running...Conti GP5000 is what I run now, on both the Hed Belgium Black and Lun Hyper R38, no clearance issues...ran a pair of Challenger tires and some rub on the front...the Hed Belgiums with CK R45 hubs and Cxray spokes have been a pretty bombproof wheelset

I watched this during my breakfast this morning just before my ride. A lovely way to start my day. Your build is unpretentious and sophisticated and you did a better job of putting it together than most bike shops I know. Love the bike, well chosen upgrades! Another thing you could upgrade is the fork. You can use a 34mm Headset, for Aheadset forks, that are used in BMX bikes. Than, you can buy a Carbon Fiber fork, and save more weight. I did this to my old bike, and it works well! I saved 800 grams changing spacers, stem, adapters, and the fork itself, when I switched to an Aheadset Carbon Fiber fork, it really worth it!

Nice build. My 2002 "Plum Crazy" Quantum is getting a new 105 R7000 (2 x 11) groupset, Whisky stem and Dimension flat top shallow drop bar this spring. It will look a lot like this one, but with different wheels and tubeless tires. Thanks for the preview. I added a Fizik Arione Classic saddle, Whisky carbon seatpost, and Enve titanium QR skewers last year. Used Bontrager RXL tubeless ready alloy wheels were added 2 years ago. I bought my Klein brand new in '02. It was one of the last made in Chehalis. I've never heard this color/paint called "Purple Haze" though. Edit: After further research, it appears that your bike is a 2000. The paint job is a bit different, where the "Purple Haze" looks green at an angle and the "Plum Crazy" is more of a copper color in one direction and deep blue at another angle. According to the 2000 Klein Tech Manual, the color of your bike is called "Blastberry", even though it's referred to as "Purple Haze" in many places on the internet.

Love it! Shimano 105 is the way to go. Anything beyond that is pointless performance wise, unless you want electronic shifting.

However, I don’t think anyone would be able to discern any actual difference in performance between any of these groupsets. If anyone has the cash and wants to opt for anything beyond 105, by all means do it. I just feel that money would be better spent elsewhere where it may be more noticeable, in wheels, for example.

I find the best way to get rid of stickers is to use hot water, melts the glue then you can just peel off.....works a treat!!!!

Looks amazing! I would have personally went with Supacaz Kush Galaxy -oil slick bar tape to tie into the frame paint. It would have went perfectly but looks fantastic. De-decaling the wheels really gave it a more upscale boutique look. I feel like logo'd wheels are just plain gaudy. I also would have went with a Zipp carbon cockpit (except for the stem) just to inch out some weight savings and add some comfort, but all good stuff, and the R7000 105 is exception value and aesthetic!

I really love the colour of the bike!!! i want to have one the this paint job of my bike too.. But in Berlin, 2 bikes i have fixed and repaired were stolen. So watching your video and dreaming at night would be enough~~ Besides building sth with second hand bike is really enjoyable. I am working on a 40€ old steel frame and hopefully i can turn it into a singlespeed, then after awhile upgrade to a 11 speed bike for work. (but chainline calculation is a problem). I had my 99 Klein attitude race stolen xmass after converting it to a 700c drop bar with disc in front 105 shifters 46/34 12-34 9spd 38 wide kenda tires fitting fine ready to stomp ...rock shock Judy...it was 26+ lbs but I did it super cheap ...madd as heck

@@Velofil I did 700 cause I found some cannondale touring bike wheels great shape and the kenda tires near new ...The same frame is on sale for 50$ at a bike shop that has used stuff ...200 for a mantra frame so I plan to rebuild it with more cash tho ...just all the sentimental rides and moments are gone ...the frame that was stolen was black and red ...on sale is blue ...i test rode a blue one and bought the black ...funny ...I might do 650b this time...definitely on the mantra ...so ya it was gonna be a monster too...and I'm 52 jacked up to do it again...the bike was fast on or off pavement just stopped going to trails and was brutal to hang with the evolution at that time 2k era...as gravel bike I think it would shock alot of folks how good that power transfer is on old aluminum kleins ...frickin bullets

Awesome build I think I will do something similar with Tiagra. 105 is now dead to me because it's electronic only. Honestly a near perfect build, only things I would change are subcompact cranks(I'm not that strong of a rider) and clinchers with at least 28mm maybe 32mm if the frame can handle it instead of tubular tyres.
