Thank you for sharing your philosophy, it's refreshing to hear the justification for your design and rationale for how your spec your bikes in an industry full of marketing. Thanks for educating us and providing the details for why you do what you do.

Some cool news on battery tech -- Amprius has a battery using silicon nano-wires and anodes. The point is that it can charge to 80% in 6 minutes, and the energy density is 500Wh/kg, 1300Wh/liter. This is double or better of what Teslas use. It's only a 5V chemistry, but 10 smaller cells in series (easier to do because of better conductivity of the nanowires) would be, as they say, a game-changer. :)

Wow! This looks amazing and as always, Jones bikes are in a league of their own. Having this bike and choice of components described by you is very nice and shows that you have put so much importance into this build. Honesty, you where ahead of your time with the 29 mid plus and now even further ahead with all the details you put into this build. Thanks, I’ll be sure to consider a Jones for my next purchase

Oh! Man! Look at these beauties! I got my Jones used late last spring. It's a Plus LWB in medium. It feels a bit large for me, but I drive it comfortably just the same. Wouldn't part with it for the world! My other two Surly bikes (a Pugsley and a Karate Monkey) just collect dust these days. Trying to sell them and get more money for my next Jones! But, hey, where's the Truss Fork in this video? Mine has the Truss Fork. Love it. Jones is the best bike I have ever owned. Nothing else comes close.

Fantastic information. Now I totally get the through axel advantage. The tier information was also …..not what I would have assumed. Kind of counterintuitive! But I get it. I once test rode a bike with a Jones Loop bar. It was really unforgettable. At 66 I think will go for the Jones Bike… because the experience in the design will keep me rolling for as long as I possibly can with osteoarthritis and a fully torn rotator cuff that could not be fixed.

I was intrigued until I saw the price and then my reaction was, $3000 for a bike that, with the exception of the drive train, has nothing but Jones branded components? And Box is really nothing to brag about, if at least it was Microshift Advent X. Maybe I'm being unrealistic, but I was thinking sub $2000 before I went to the Jones website and saw the actual price.

@Manetty6
@Manetty6 Жыл бұрын
Interesting to see how you spec the bike. I really like that you shared. However I feel like it has a some hipster driven marketing behind some elements and some poor choices in the name of durability. I know a lot of people is cold sweating about hidraulic brakes, but over the years they proven even more reliable than the always maintain hungry cable brakes. Shimano brakes are the most easy to work with and most durable option rise above every one on the market, because of mineral oil, manufacturing tolerances at cheap price and world wide spread so part are everywhere. Unbeatable by an other company. Durabilitywise Magura is great (bc of mineral oil), however their levers are not so great. The main body is made of plastic and around the main pivot there are so little material, that they have significant amount of chance to brake. Calipers are great, a ton of power. If you brake the lever, you can make it work with a Shimano one. Cable vs fluid. It's 2023, even on the remotes places you can find someone who is familiar with this "hightech". But moreover is well proven by the time fluid based brakes are realiable as hell. Those Alhonga brakes are really low end stuff. Cable operated disc brakes are the creation of the devil, should have died out years ago. A Shimano mt200 set would be the same price with a set and forget feature in mind. Avid BB7s are good but why bother with them when you can get Shimano mt200 cheaper. I get the points with the levers, but to set up like that is requires more skill from an average user that aligning the hidraulic calipers right after a YT tutorial. Compressionless housing is great, especially on the rear. Someone who is doing a lot of biking will spend more time adjusting mechanical brakes than hidraulic. I'd rather spec and rebrand same other chineese crank set with SRAM sprocket interface and 24mm Shimano compatible spindle. This way you can keep the easy and well spread "GXP" style mounting with a more durable bearing system. Smaller diameter spindle means more bearing at BSA. Sram bearing system can be a pain if have a not so perfect bottombracket on the frame. The hardend steel bearing race on soft aluminium is not a good combination. On the Simano style system, you have a steel axle, sitting on polimer bushings and than the larger bearings. If you have failiure at the crankset, you will loose the cheap part, the bb and not a pricy part the crankset (axle). 9 speed is really just taste of choice and price. You can buy 10 or 11 speed wide range stuff to please people who prefer closer range of the gears to maintain cadence. Chain is another interesting thing. What really does matter at durabilty, what kind material the used and with what surface treatment. (Ex. M9100, XTR chain will easly out perform M6100 chain by 6-8 times, same geometrical construction but way better materials on the top. This is extremely important on ebike application when the motor unit performs larger torq from 0 rpm than most of our cars.) At lower price you can't get any fancy stuff. Nickeling the outer plates are mainly against rust. Hardening the rollers, pins and make them slick gives the chain durablity. I wouldn't simplify this topic down just to bare outer plate thickness. In the future If you will need durability take a look arond the upcoming CUES from Shimano.

How would a Jones bicycle behave with skinny-er tires and lighter wheel in terms of front tire grip? There is far less weight on the front tire compared to traditional approach geometry with skinny tires, Jones uses wide and heavy tire+rim setup so even without the body weight on the front there is grip, how much front wheel grip would you loose with a traditional skinny-er tire and rim?

Since this bike has a slacker effective seat tube angle than normal and tall wheels, the seat tube needs to be bent to clear the tire and have room for a fender. This may help you see it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6m1mnlup9Jnh8kfeature=shared

I bought my Jones 29+ in ~2015 and had it built by Neil at Cyclemonkey with a Rohloff Speedhub. (Before I talked to Jeff about this). I also have a Jones 29+ built by Jeff with Shimano components. Both have the same rims (WTB Scrapers) and Maxxis Chronicles (when they were still made), With the only difference between the two back tires being the hub, the Rohloff is 3lbs heavier. As Jeff shows in one of his videos, the Roholff also requires more torque to turn the wheel. That being said, I have not swapped out the Rohloff for 12 speed because I like it. I have a Gebla Rohbox shifter with SRAM X0 shifters, so the left thumb shifts up, right thumb shifts down. I have a belt drive so I also had to install a chain stay splitter. The eccentric bottom bracket allows you to adjust the setup like a single speed.
