The Velotric Nomad 1 fat tire electric bike has gained significant popularity since its recent launch. In today's Velotric Nomad 1 ebike review I analyze the components of this e-bike, and comment on it's ride characteristics during a challenging ride up ascending 2000 ft elevation gain to the Hollywood sign, and push this electric bike to it's limits. Along the way I experience some misfortune that sets us back a few hours.
This is a good hill climbing ebike, and also has a fairly good top speed. The battery provides long range, but this video will qualify just how long of a range a fat tire ebike can actually do.
By the end of this video I hope you can decide if the Velotric ebike offers the style, convenience, and performance you're looking for in an electric bike.
✅ My #1 Favorite Big Ebikes w/ pedals:
This is like the "Trophy Truck" of ebikes, like a pick-up truck with a nitrous switch, huge and has ridiculous power, big 26" off road tires, and big plush suspension... you'll get more smiles per gallon instead of miles per gallon, don't watch this if you aren't preparred to drop $2k today:

You are a SUPERHERO for taking one for the team and testing this bike to the limits! This is the exact bike my girl is looking to get based on your other reviews, and I can't tell you how much I appreciated you giving this bike a significant workout (and so glad the bike shop could get the flat fixed). Bought the Wired Freedom for myself based on your reviews too, so I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate the detail and the thoroughness of the work that you're doing. THANK YOU!! 🙂

I have a Velotric Discover 1, the first gen one. I love it, and I'm considering buying the Nomad 1 so I can extend my bike commuting season into the late fall winter. Great review, but dude, stay off the sidewalks! Especially where there are so many pedestrians! Be safe! Driving in traffic sucks, but trying to walk with bikes whizzing by is scary!

When I got my Discover, the first thing I did was install Schwalbe marathon plus. Those tires are bulletproof. No punctures and 10k mile tread wear. I’ve run Schwalbe’s over 30 k miles without a flat.

Nice, I agree, I had those on a road bike and never got a flat for years. I wouldn’t recommend using them that long though haha, why I put new tires on the ride was soooo much better. Fresh rubber every now and then is a luxury and a treat, tires should not be overlooked

Great video! One of my biggest fears is breaking down or running out of battery far from home. I’m glad things worked out for you and you got back home with a little battery power to spare. Once I ran out of battery on my heavy Cyrusher fat tire bike and had to pedal about 4 miles home.

That was aweful. Glad it wasn't both tires, just one is bad enough. I’m afraid of this issue as well. I have a Vitilan I7 pro with 20 X 4-inch wheels. So I ordered a _”foldable bead”_ tire and tube kit in that size from Amazon. It fits in the rear bike rack bag along with tools and a portable tire inflator. Now I literally have a spare tire just in case. I’m not worried if the battery runs out. I have plenty of back-fat that my body can convert to ketones for energy.

With your experience, I would expect that you would carry a stick on tube patch $1.00, tire levers $3.00 and a small (6"*1" dia.) pump in your saddle bag$5.00. We do get flats with our bikes, yet I have ridden flay free from Vancouver, B.C. to LA, Ca. with Schwalbe Marathon puncture resistant tires. Nice video, riding on sidewalks? Yet I do remember asking for directions from the beach area to train station and the LA police officer was shocked I wanted to ride a bike in LA.

I use FlatOut Multi-Purpose Tire Sealant in my 20x4.0 e-bike tires. I wish I had done the same for all the 'acoustic' (non-electric 😄) bikes I have had in the past. It saves on having to carry tools, tube/patch kit, pump. And pumping up these huge tires with a small bike pump would be a workout on its own. No flat tires so far.

By the way, the bar indicators are never a indication of remaining charge or range. The discharge profile of batteries have an S-shape. Some display try to emulate this by approximation. Mostly unsuccessful. The best guestimate on charge is the output voltage when motor is not under load. When the voltage is at nominal, you have about one third left.

Sorry for commenting on an old video; I'm a new subscriber catching up! Tough break on the puncture, and yes that is a bad spot to be in. Hey Matt, From one West-coastie to another (from across the border in BC) I want to say that I really appreciate your objective and informative reviews. Your 1st review of the Velotric Nomad 1 really helped me land on "this is the bike for me". At 6' 2" with short-ish legs, I knew the more open cockpit would be a good fit for my abnormally tall upper body with freakishly long arms, lol. The challenge for me in BC is limited purchase options in Canada. The only available Nomad model is the original, on sale for $1600CAD - ($1162USD!!)... not the Plus, and certainly not the N2 which (when it is released next Spring - with its rear suspension, upgraded forks, torque sensor, beefy rear rack, Apple Find My, colour high-res display, etc) is easily going to add a $1500+ to the price I was able to get the OG for. However... your comparative reviews between the OG Velotric Nomad 1 and the newer Plus model helped me avoid the old "I've got to have the newest" dilema! As a former MB rider, who now tips the scales at 280lbs, I am very good with the snappier/torquier original power profile, with better hill climbing, albeit with some sacrifice of top end speed - plus I can always throw on an adjustable stem if necessary. What I am saying is the information you provide, and the consistency with which you present it, is real-world useful! Cheers and thank you! Arne

Consider getting a Multi-Meter to measure the voltage of the battery at 100% and other levels of charge. Charts are available that show what a X volt battery should read at different levels of discharge. This way you can confirm the claimed rating for the battery. Without disassembling the battery you can't know what cells are being used and, sadly, some of the Chinese brands are sub-spec. Considering that the battery is the single most expensive part of an eBike it should be the first item to examine when doing a product evaluation.

if you hear something strange, stop the bike and inspect tires. you may be able to save a tube when something sticks your tire. also, a patch kit would be a good idea, or slime in tubes and a pump if patching isnt your thing. that may not help too much for a metal rod but may slow it down enough to get a ways before needing to pump again. one could also carry spare tube and tools but thats already annoying on a regular ebike rear and likely worse on a fat tire.

Not sure if you would answer this but does the code work for the non step through model? and is there a way to get it to right hand throttle of some sort. Can you move that over to right side or maybe buy another one twist or thumb?
@TailHappyTV
@TailHappyTV Жыл бұрын
If you click the link below the video then enter the code it will work for any model. Yes you could swap the throttle to the other side with a different one. Hope this helps!

It was 10:45 at least that's what it reminded me of lol. I watched another one of your videos where you showed the Venice canals and Venice beach, so much of your area reminds me of GTA V

Sounds like the limitations of the bike distract your thoughts from just enjoying the ride a bit. Not having to constantly consider range must be a huge relief after this.

Is it possible to get a different style throttle for this bike. If so where or what is compatible looking to get a turn or twist style like a motorcycle throttle

What is the app with the map being used in the video around 2:00. I know to 99% of you it sounds like a stupid question, but I'm a 60 year old man getting back in to this fitness and exploration game. Anyone who can drop some advice on apps like this, it will be greatly appreciated.
