The only scene of Velvet Buzzsaw I truly enjoyed was that one scene where the public thought the dead body was just a part of the art piece and the children were playing in the blood. That scene really stuck with me. The rest was pretty disappointing imo.

I think the real problem with Velvet Buzzsaw is that all the best parts of the movie were spoiled in the trailer. The main reason I watched the movie was because the trailer was so damn good. The "art coming to life" concept was done well but they could have gone to much further places with it. Overall, I thought the movie was dishonest and disappointing.

Something I dug about Velvet Buzzsaw that I wish it went into more was when Jake's character was going over the events in the artist's life and investigating his past. I wish it did that more, delved into the lore of who this artist was, and maybe why his paintings are cursed now.

To me, the film feels like it's trying to be a satire of the art world with horror/mystery elements. If the trailers and the film itself did focus on the why of the killer art and the story behind Ventral Dees that Gyllenhaal investigates throughout most of the film, it might, MIGHT, have been received better criticism. It could have been more of a psychological horror in tune with say, Jacobs Ladder, than what came out. It's got solid ideas, but the killer art and Gyllenhaal's investigation do feel like two different plots merged together. And honestly, I did enjoy it. Not gonna say it's anywhere near Top 10, but it was semi-enjoyable. All in all, 6, 7/10, mostly for The investigation plot. Also, you do bring up great points and your reviews feel more comfortable, relatable and humorous than other reviews, even when I don't agree with them. Also also, all your awesome movie recommendations for really awesome movies! Even for the ones I've seen, thank you for reminding me of some amazing works of cinema.

When it came out I remember being fairly enjoyed by it like it was just a slightly above average movie that kept me mostly entertained but lacked potential, but then I completely forgot about it until I was scrolling through the Dead Meat podcast episodes and saw it and was reminded oh yeah that movie! There's very few parts I can remember but I'm pretty sure I liked it even though it had potential to be way better.

I always appreciate when main characters aren't automatically written as heterosexual. But if the character's not well written (not necessarily having to be a good or likeable character) then that representation just rings hollow.

i love hearing you two talk about this movie lol. it’s not a great one, but i liked it hehe. about the ending with the tattoo, while rhodora was sitting outside, the movers were taking ALL the art from her house because she realized that it was the art killing everyone. then while she was meditating, the tattoo came to life and killed her as like a “fuck you, you can’t get rid of all the art.” i just think it was supposed to like scare the audience cuz you think she’s finally coming to her senses and recognizing the problem, but then it’s like no matter what, art is everywhere. it also made me look at my tattoos and wonder how they’d kill me lol

First thing I want to add is that James and Chelsea should check out Blindspotting. It isn't horror but Daveed Diggs is the lead and it is a phenomenal indie movie that addresses racial politics and gentrification. I don't know if the blood in the painting is just for spookiness or if they were trying to reference the history of Mummy Brown paint. It was a popular paint color through the centuries, starting during the European Egypt-is-so-cool phase of history. During that time, paint companies acquired actual mummies, ground them up, and added the corpses to the paint (seriously). The color is gorgeous, but rather gruesome when you think about it. Many artists were not aware their paint contained corpses. Mummy Brown only just stopped being produced in, like, 1964 or so, when the company ran out of mummy bodies. The history of it is really weird and interesting. But I might be giving this movie too much credit.
