Latin America is facing the largest refugee crisis in its history as hundreds of thousands of people flee Venezuela to escape severe economic hardship.
Once one of the region's wealthiest countries, Venezuela has been hit hard by a drop in oil prices from 2014 onwards, with the economic situation worsening under the fiscal mismanagement of President Nicolas Maduro.
Since Maduro took power following the death of the country's long-time leader, Hugo Chavez, in 2013, the Venezuelan bolivar has lost some 99.99 percent of its value against the US dollar on the black market. Few Venezuelans have access to official exchange rates, which have been controlled since 2003.
The president blames the crisis on an "economic war" against the socialist country by opponents, including the United States but for many of the country's 31.5 million people, the exact reason things went wrong is no longer important.
The imploding economy has led to shortages of basic items such as food and medicine and, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), some 1.6 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2015.
For those who remain, daily life is a struggle and hopes of a better life in Colombia, Brazil or elsewhere are never far from their minds.
Three Venezuelans share their hopes, dreams and fears for the future with Al Jazeera:
Olga Betancourt, 43, hairdresser
"The situation in the country has become so difficult. No matter how hard you work, the money is never enough to buy anything, including materials and tools to work with because they are extremely expensive.
"About a year and five months ago is when life began to become unbearable here ... I can't buy food, my mother needs special treatment for high blood pressure but she can't get it because it's too expensive. Her entire pension goes to pay for her medication.
"I will leave in two months if I can sell what I need to sell. It's not because I want to emigrate from my country, I want to move forward with my profession and help my mother with her treatment and food. It hurts me to leave my mother here all by herself because my brother went to Peru two months ago.
"I want to be able to work and have the means to survive and help my family. Some people say it's the government's fault, but we are also the ones to blame. We chose this president knowing that this could happen.
"Chavez was one thing, but Nicolas Maduro is a different story. I voted for him, but I regret it now. I've never seen a government as chaotic as the one we have today. It's destroyed Venezuelans, our children, the elderly, the hospitals, everything.
"Everything that is happening here is terrible. This sinks deeper and deeper every day and we're abandoned. I can't survive."
Antonio Jose Primero, 29, videogamer
"I feel trapped because I don't have the freedom to travel to other countries like Venezuelans used to. Also, I have an illness that is very difficult to treat. I have haemophilia but I don't have any information about if I would need medical insurance abroad - I don't know what treatment there would be for an immigrant.
"There is a shortage of the medicine I need, so I'm now getting it through humanitarian aid. It's no longer produced by a factory to buy, you can only sometimes get it through humanitarian aid. The dose I'm getting now isn't enough.
"I can't live a regular day-to-day life, I have to be very careful. I avoid going out because I'm scared of running out of medicine. This disease attacks your joints and produces internal bleeding. With the correct dose of medicine you can prevent the bleeding, but when we don't have it we become practically immobilised. We can spend days in pain, unable to sleep.
"I am walking with crutches because I have so much pain in my legs. Had I gotten the correct dose, I'd be in perfect shape right now. With the right treatment, you're a normal person, like someone who isn't sick. It's like having a shield. When you don't have the medicine, the body deteriorates terribly. You even run the risk of bleeding to death.
"I'd be happy if Venezuela went back to what it was before. I'd be happy if this crisis ends. It's impossible to live here now. You are really unhappy here. There are no opportunities, there is no future".

I'm Venezuelan, I left my country in 2004. In that year it was a "socialist paradise". Many people like that woman in the interview called us trash traitor because we didn't like Hugo Chávez way of ruling. I was humiliated by people like her because I was anti-revolution. People like her voted for Chávez once, twice, many times. Everybody knew Chávez was anti-democratic and was destroying the economy. But nobody cared about it, because he bought their awareness with petrodollars. Not mine, I had to leave my country when all they celebrated when Chavez stole prosperous and wealthy people, they were his partners in crime, not his victims.

@Michael Maya The rise in GDP was just due to oil and government spending, not investment and private consumption. That's why when the oil prices fell, so did the GDP. Extreme poverty was still at 30% despite Chavez social programs and high oil prices. Now, it is 90% Interestingly, crime skyrocketed during Chavez years and high oil prices

Friends of ours in southern Chile brought from Venezuela almost an entire family to help them with their family business. They paid for the family - a mother with a daughter and young baby, and later the husband, to stay in Santiago and their internal transportation to get south. They gave them jobs and food and a place to live. Late last year they let them all go because they were stealing money from the business. Almost the whole time there they complained about how bad their lives were. Many people are leaving because they knew neighboring countries were going to tighten border restrictions. Many have stayed and do not want to leave.

Rahim Before Chavez, the economy was doing just fine, under Capitalism. Then, Chavez got elected and started arresting his opponents and driving money out of the country. When Chavez's gov't confiscated businesses and property, it made other business leave. Chavez then gave those confiscated business to his corrupt cronies, who drove them into the ground. Keep in mind, Chavez was trained to drive a tank, and Maduro drove a bus; they know nothing about running an economy.

I used to be a regular middle class venezuelan myself. My family caught up very early that Chavez was crazy lol... My family has been speaking agaisnt the chavismo since 2001... But we never thought it will get THIS bad... Many of my family members have died in the past couple of years whether it is because of crime, or bad infrastructure or lack of medication. These sort of conflicts to me used to be things that you will read about in National Geographic! Like in a north Korea article or a USSR documentary... This is crazy that we find ourselves in our situation. Me and my close family was able to scape, but many of my cousins, uncles, friends are still in venezuela. And you never know who is gonna die next, I don't visit often, with that crime is very dangerous.. I am very aware that every time I visit venezuela I could die, special since when you live abroad people think you're rich and you become a target for kidnapping. And many times they kidnap people and they kill them, even if they pay... The police in venezuela doesn't work, so criminals don't care because they know they can get away with it the police doesn't do anything and is corrupt, specially if they know you don't like the goverment. Sometimes the chavistas themselves get paid to harrass the opposing civilians

Not if the US can help it. They don't allow socialism to happen near the US bc then Americans might get "ideas". Thus ANY country in South America that doesn't allow the US to pillage their natural resources the CIA will arm, fund, and train their opposition just like we're doing in Syria, Afghanistan and like we did with Iran, and Iraq. as US secrets have come to light namely that the US would rather have a dictator in place then a democracy and they are absolutely terrified of socialist governments and do everything possible to make them fail so that Americans don't get any "ideas" about the gov taking care of the ppl OR holding corporations accountable. Thus we destroy democracies way more frequently then create them and we've been trying for the last 20 YEARS to control Venezula.

Many have tried, but in order to start having crops you need seeds, proper pesticides, soil correction... and knowledge on how to do it, otherwise any investment could be lost on the first year. Farming is no longer as simple as it once was, or as widely commonly known. Very few succeed, and those who do end up having the little they managed to cultivate stolen.

TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR...NOT MERE HUMANS...AND REPENT! "In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and rescued me. The Lord is for me, so I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me. I will look in triumph at those who hate me. It is better to trust the Lord than to put confidence in people. It is better to trust the Lord than to put confidence in princes...The Lord has punished me severely but he has not handed me over to death...Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever." (Psalm 118:5-9, 18, 29 NLT) "For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child....No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening - it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way." (Hebrews 12:6, 11 NLT) So sincerely "...Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38) He will teach you, comfort and protect you, and help you follow in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ, even in the face of death, so you may receive the crown of life. Your destiny is to become like Jesus Christ (a true child of God). God’s purpose is to make those He chose like His Son, Jesus, so you can live with Him forever in the Kingdom of God, bringing Him eternal glory and happiness (Romans 8:29).

It's the only thing the guy can do from home, since me most simple of injuries could end up killing him. He stays at home, looks at his computer and says "How can I make a living from this, having incomplete formal education?". I actually sighed in relief he had some sort of income.

Dudd, Uruguay has like a 3 million population and is a small country. If all the Bolivians living in Argentina would suddenly decide to settle in Uruguay your population will double. I mean, Uruguay couldnt even make room for the Bolivians living in Argentina.
