At 3:20 wouldn't the Pr(A U B') exclude y also, since B still occurs in y? Which would give x = .9? When you do it that way you get a negative value for y+z which logically doesn't make sense, but I don't see why y would be included by the second expression.

it's because y is still part of event A. It says the union of A and B complement, so it should contain all elements that are in A even if some of them are not part of B'. Hope this helps :)

@@shielanicolecruz3683 That makes sense thank you. So, if it was the intersection of A and B' it would just be x itself. Right?

P(A U B') - P(A U B)' = P(A U B') - P(A' U B') = .9-(1-.7) = .9-.3 = .6

Excellent Lesson

WOW this is way more complicated than just subtracting the complement of P(A U B) from P (A U B') | that is : P(A U B') - P(A U B)' = P(A U B') - P(A' U B') = .9-(1-.7) = .9-.3 = .6

A question: would it not be easier to think of it in the following way? If A union B is 7, then the complement is 3. We also know that A union NOT in B is 9. Therefore, we know that out of the 10 objects, 9 are not in B. But we already know that 3 are NEITHER in A or B, so that means that 6 are in A but not in B. That leaves us with 1 for B, and A intersect B as an empty set.
