Kindly help with the solutions for these questions: In a football academy of 80 players, 40 are midfielder, 30 are strikers and 35 are defenders. 10 of the players are good at exactly two of the positions, 5 players are goalkeepers and y players are good at all the three positions. Nice demonstration! I noticed that you used the universe to represent the entire sample space of the total population of students. However, is it possible to use three overlapping circles and place the 7 in the region of an unclassified ( area of no subjects taken) third circle where the three circles don't overlap. I'm new at this, so I just wanted to know is this possible. Thanks!

Ray Daniels If one of the circles are unclassified, then there shouldn't be a circle. So lets say there is 2 people that are not taking any of the subjects. They then go outside the circles, but still inside the universe (the box).

To Nima Mahmoud 7 were taking art. But 4 of those 7 were also taking maths. So 7-4 = 3. Therefore only 3 were taking just art. You have limited data given. IE some of the total 20 are taking Art or Marts or neither subjects. You were not told how many were not taking which subjects or not specificly. Just that 10 were taking maths, 7 taking art, 4 both. 10 and 7 (17) are not the total. 17 is the combined total of those taking M or A. If I then subtract those 4 taking both from the combined total I get a distribution of 13 not doing both and 4 doing both. So your maths is wrong as you most likly are not seeing the data correctly.10+7+4 does indeed make 21. But there are only 20 students. So your 7 is how many not doing subjects. Therefore the total students 20 minus 7 gives 13 doing subjects. The 4 is the number of those doing both. So they have to be subtracted from the combind before adding. By now it may start to look a little bit difficult. But 'do not panic'. It is infact not as easy and straight forward as it at first appears. Hence the teacher is using a Venn Diagram. The diagram helps to isolate the correct figure to prevent the very easy mistake you made. You have added up the 10, 7 and the 4. But the 4 are already distributed in the 10 and 7. So you have counted the 4 twice. How about U = M10 + A7 - B4 = 13 (B = Both). Hope that helps.

It is a bit late for the exam now. But in the above Venn Diagram 2 sets are used using two circles to represent the sets of data over lapping. So if you have 3 sets you use 3 circles over lapping. So if I add a G for Geography to the above diagram for Maths M and Art A. I now have AGM. So just lay Circles G over both circles AM to give three equal over laying circles. You get an extra area in the center which is for the Union of all there shared. There are sure plenty videos out there and far easyier to show on screen. Good Luck

To Tyler D To show you the fuctions of the Venn diagram. He is using a simplified example to make learn easer. What if he was using 7,674 people from a new mega school and he needed to display the entire school sublects. So then the extra data would help him double check his data. IE if the total data in the circles plus the number outside add up to the value 7,674. Then he can be sure he has the right number. Likewise if he subtracts from the total. Those remaining are those doing nither. He is just demonstrating using easy to observe. There are instances where that little piece of data is incredible useful. For example you are sent on assignment to monitor east and west bound motorway traffic in to London during Rush hour. You set up you camera and (visual display unit) VDU. So on screen you see a ronning total. Plus the sub totals for cars, lorries, bikes, caravans etc etc. So these numbers can also be shown as percentages. So the total is 100%. As long as the total shown is 100% you can be sure the additions are adding up correctly. So you pour your self a steaming hot cup of tea. You check the time. It is 40 minutes from start and the total rate of motorway west MW and motorway East ME (IE the union of both sets) is showing 135 vehicles per minute. Other data is being collected at the same time such as speed, colour, noise, carbon emissions, vehicle height length and basically anything. Too much for a single human. So the total 100% is great as it means 'All present and correct. Another part of the monitoring program is actually keeping an eye on that 100% number. If the number changes to any number other than the total. A warning beeper sounds. There fore you can put you cup of tea down and investigate. So just that tiny little bit of data plays a very importand role in many systems. A nuclear power plant or other systems may be dependant on 24/7 monitoring. So the sensors may be monitoring the total tempreture of all the unions as well as individual unions. If the total exceeds a certain number ghen the red warning sounds. The idea is to stop BOOOOOM! Or melt down. So he was just demonstrating. So the why was to show the viewers. He was showing how he can obtain another helpful reference number from subtracting from known values. That helps him know he is right. But it looks so miuch more obvious is a small simplified set that it almost looks insignificant. But when applied to high speed data collections using mind bogling numbers that continuously change. Then the answer to the mind bogling is thost numbers used as control numbers.
