I worked for a famous reptile zoo in the North East for a few decades. One of my occasional duties was to raise neonates their first year to "fatten" them up. Basically, get all the difficult feeders to eat regularly. Also, switch new born king cobras from desiring snake scent, to just grabbing thawed rodents on their own without scenting. One of my baby kings, got mentioned in a recent zoo memoir, in which me and the director, traveling to set up a sport show exhibit in Iowa, In February, in a blizzard,....Around 4am, the pulsing thump, .....thump.....thump of the highway and long straight stretch of wind blowing snow, I would occasionally crack the window for a second, or stretch the seat belt out to move a bit and keep sharp eye on the road. One time, reaching down to grab, what I thought was a flopping seat belt on my chest, wasn't. I realized the feel of snake skin, and knowing I packed over a dozen venomous snakes in the rubbermaids behind my seat, I could not see what I just touched. When I exclaimed, "Oh shit",... the director woke from his nap in the passenger seat, frantically asking "what! ,...Where! " My arms were now as high as I could hold them whilst still keeping a fingertip on the steering wheel. I slowly reached down to turn the cabin light on, only to see ......"George" our 11 foot, king cobra, with the first 1/3 of his body on my arm rest and his head bouncing off my chest. The director was panicking, I was relieved. George and I were fine. I raised him by this point for 3 years and, other than a typical slight hood and rush to the door of the cage, all my kings would normally lie down at the slightest touch with a hook on the back of the hood. Just a gentle nudge and they would submit and become puppies. I raised about 20 kings and quite a few golden eyelash (troublesome eaters their first couple weeks)vipers over the years, in addition to the other 500 animals, and 5 -1 hour lectures daily.

Don't know if you read most of the comments that are made under the most knowledgeable keepers of venomous species here on U-tube, or not... but if you do you may have seen the numerous comments that I have left regarding my experience (or background) with Kings. As you no doubt know... there is a reason that they are so highly regarded... I fully understand your response to the the situation and couldn't agree with you more! Thanks for sharing!

Amazing content as usual willy and great work on the video Deena . Venom Central is by far the premiere educational snake husbandry channel on you tube. I have been watching for a long long time. Venom Central offers Expert knowledge, High Quality Content, Entertaining Videos and so much more. Willy and Deena make you feel like you are a part of the venom central family. I bought a few things and donated the items to them and it didn't matter if it was something as small as coconut fiber or as big as a scale , they not only thanked me on the next video but sent me a personal email as well . They are genuinely good people. I encourage everyone to visit the serpent center. I'll be getting a private tour this summer and I already know it will be an unforgettable and amazing experience just like their KZbin channel. Keep up the great work guys.

We can't wait for you to see The Serpent Center. You'll love it! Give us a heads-up so we can put you on the calendar. And your generosity has always been overwhelming. And your support. It's always great to know that no matter how few subs we have, the views we get are serious, loyal, and repeat viewers -- here for the serious side of venomous, safety first, and only good husbandry - real education of the species...not regurgitated Wikipedia BS or snakes taking a bath - or just plain false disinformation. We share our knowledge to any genuine snake enthusiast - not people looking for the train wreck.

Obviously king cobras are a holy grail in venomous herpetoculture, but who in the hell would want a wild caught adult king??? That sounds like an entirely unreasonable animal to try and work with. As always, love the handling techniques on display in this video. The little details... like catching the snake's tail with the hook instead of letting it drop. No wonder your animals are always so calm.

If you live in the South, just follow a creek bed that has cold water. You’ll find one eventually near the creek. You could also grab a few sheets of tin metal and take them out to the woods where there is a creek nearby, aa well ans lots of pine trees and just leave the tin on the ground. Come back after a couple days and CAREFULLY check under the tin metal and see if there are any under there. Keep checking and eventually you’ll get something sleeping under the tin.

Do cobras hood up before biting?
@willhickey73872 ай бұрын
Not neccessarily. Most of the times they hood to display they are "big and tough" to get you to leave them alone, but if you were to step on or something like that, it would bite you before you know what hit you

I wish people would get that stupid mentality out of their brain when it comes to animals there are a lot of animals out there that do you know stop and think of their next move and king cobras you can see the intelligence on them they'll stop and you can actually see them think how am I going to sink my fangs into this guy that's like fish they're smart too I mean they just don't bite at everything like a lot of people think oh I can throw my hook in the water and I'll get a fish automatically know it don't work that way a muskie is better known as the 10,000 catfish cuz it could take you up to 10,000 cast just to make that one cast look perfect enough for that fish to hit so yeah I just wish people would get that mentality out of their brain that animals are stupid

Willie, in watching 'fangs in your face' I have noticed that the Gaboon vipers do not use their tongue when they are locating the rat , is it because the rat is so close in proximity to it's head?
@richardchapman595610 ай бұрын
Congratulations to both of you what a fantastic new facility I wish you the best of luck in your new venture! I do have a question I keep meaning to ask concerning the feeding of your gaboons and other snake's that strike and hold prey, how often if at all have they let go of the prey item and struck at you, the reason I ask is because of the speed and unusual strikes you mention, like backwards and up side down etc of the puffs gaboons et al and how dangerous the venom is and the speed of the strike would mean there's no way in hell to react quickly enough to get out of the way, has this ever been a problem for, just wondering.
@VenomCentral10 ай бұрын
Very rare for them to let go, and I totally agree 💯 that there's no getting out of the way of a snake striking - especially a gaboon! My camera/feeding rig setup is 100% safe and patent pending. I have never been bitten in over 40+ years. (And never had an escape) Safety is always priority #1. Thank you for watching and stay tuned!
