Opener sequence depicting venous thromboembolism.
Deep inside a vein in the body, a blood clot has formed and broken free, traveling through the bloodstream to the lungs. Eventually, it may become lodged in a pulmonary artery or one of its branches, blocking bloodflow and putting a strain on the heart.
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a term that encompasses two conditions: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
DVT is the formation of a blood clot in one of the deep veins, usually in the legs. This clot can obstruct blood flow, leading to swelling, pain, and discoloration of the affected limb.
PE occurs when a blood clot (usually from a DVT) breaks free and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs, where it can block a pulmonary artery or one of its branches. This can reduce oxygen levels in the blood and put a strain on the heart.
