Ventrac Vs. Normal Tractor: Turf Damage

In this video we compare how a traditional sub compact tractor with loader and a Ventrac tractor with power bucket differ at moving mulch. Since the Ventrac is center articulated, the wheels follow the same path and do not impose any lateral forces on the ground beneath like the standard compact tractor wheels so. When mulching in spring, maneuverability and light-footprint are the most important features and the Ventrac provides them in the best way.
EDIT: We do realize that the compact tractor does not have turf tires installed on it and that they might perform better. Also note, the ventrac does not have turf tires either. When using a loader, a compact tractor will have R4 style tires as used here 99% of the time. This is not meant to be a brand comparison where both tractors are identical in nature, because that would be impossible. This is meant to be a comparison of two different tractors, in their most-likely configurations, going head to head in a test that shows the hurdles of mulching around your house in the spring time. If we started modifying each tractor to do this as best possible, we would end up with wildly different machines from what the vast majority of people own and operate which would not be as good of a real world observation.

Tires Im sure could make a difference on both machines, having operated plenty of articulated machines. I do agree articulation has a benefit over a solid axle balljoint/kingpin pivoting steering setup. Open differentials on a articulated machine causes a lot less disturbance . Another good video ! 👍

I think the compact tractors operator was a little more aggressive in direction changes... and at that speed he was turning was causing quite a bit of understeer.. or pushing the front wheels sideways..

We're glad you brought that up! We actually chose those tires on purpose because we were very concerned about what is the most realistic. Because construction-style bar tires are by far and away the most common tires used on compact tractors, it makes the most sense to use them. We also chose NOT to use our available turf tires or dual wheel kit on the Ventrac, even though either of those would have improved our performance even more.

Not even remotely the same weight class. I love Ventrac machines..... but this was a rigged test. A Sub-Compact machine is a much more suitable comparison. Like a Kubota BX series. Readily available with bar lug tires or turf tires. Also, could have used the Ventrac front end loader attachment vs. the slip scoop. Though I understand the reasoning behind this. Ventrac is the only manufacturer that offers one.

yeah i think some kubota dealers would sell vantracs wich mine would but no room left at the lot at the dealer for any other machines because its allways stocked up with kubota and case farm and construction and forestry equipment like pronse harvesters and skidders and farm equipment and snow plows for tractors and trucks and salt spreaders for trucks too but he could order them wich my dealer is good for that

Well here is pure experience. I have five acres with 3.5 mowable. My neighbor in front of me with five acres and 4.5 mowable uses a JD 4045. When my mower went down, he said he would use his bush hog. Well, the darn bush hog and big tractor wheels dug long deep troughs in the Florida soil and grass. It is bumpy everywhere. My truck and car goes bumpity bump down the driveway now. He uses my driveway as a way to get to the back of his property with his truck, tractor and equipment. I now have a mess after 16 yrs of control. So the tractors are made for fields and Ventrac, though not as heavy duty is great for all small to medium size jobs. That is your niché with the Ventrac product line. Work it and try not to be all things to all property owners. Thanks for the video Ventrac.

The homeowner was okay with it because we promised to fix the damage and let them keep the mulch...but after we were done shooting the comparison, we offered to put the mulch in his flower beds. His response: "Yes, that would be good. Just please, only use the Ventrac. I don't want the other tractor anywhere else around the house."

Ok...I've worked at several landscape companies over the years and I've used both of these same machines. I not only like but LOVE both of them. The Ventrac is cool with it's articulated steering and old school look and the Compact Tractor is cool because while Ventrac likes to go on about all their attachments they make. You can get ALL of the same ones for a compact tractor at a fraction of the cost because you can buy from a 3rd party manufacturer. Both of these machines have pros and cons. As I mentioned for Ventrac...That is the extremely inflated cost of having an attachment line-up that is proprietary...For the compact tractor it's that most of the attachments are rear mount for the 3 point hitch. Then there is also the fact that for the Ventrac it uses an OLD SCHOOL Belt operated PTO system that once it ages is about as reliable as Grampa's drunken stories about how you should be happy because "back in his day they didn't even have FEET!". And for the Tractor...other than the new Kubota BX80 series all attachments for the loader boom are also proprietary...And...ANY front quick hitch system for any compact tractor is proprietary as well... Some of the pros of the Ventrac are in fact lower compaction; obviously because it's physically smaller and lighter...(Not really fair here guys) And of course the articulated steering is a plus although if you've never used a vehicle with articulated steering it can take a while to get used to. Especially in tight spots where you now have the swing or arc the ends travel to consider while moving around objects. And I will say when the machines are NEW or only slightly used...They are VERY smooth to operate and all of the accessories and attachments works quite well. However...Again, because of the old and quite frankly outdated design of the Ventrac...Once things start to wear or if they are used for commercial grade work day in and day out. They WILL wear out and be basically a tractor you can put a trailer hitch on and use to move trailers around with... Compact Tractor Pros are... 1. NOTHING is belt driven other than the alternator and the engine fan. This the one thing that Ventrac NEEDS to take note of. Again compact tractors use NO BELTS for their implements!!! No BELTS = NO WEAR or stretching to contend with. No idler or tensioner bracket wear to worry about. You might have to replace a U-Joint in a PTO shaft if you choose not to grease it when you use it but that is your own fault... Another pro for compact tractors is the industry standard 3 point hitch they all have on the back WITH an industry STANDARD 540RPM rear PTO that you can get pretty much anything you can dream up to fit. AND it doesn't have to be from the tractor manufacturer so a lot of times they are considerably cheaper than attachments for the Ventrac. PLUS!!! If you invest in say 5-6 different 3 point hitch implements and then decide to get a different machine for whatever reason later on. Be it more power or more comfort or maybe you just want the newer version of what you already have but they increased the size a bit...NO WORRIES! You're GOOD! Because the 3 point hitch on the back is still the same and all the money you've spent on implements is not wasted because you can still use them on your new machine. And yes I know that Ventrac offers a NON-PTO 3 point hitch for their machines but again...It does NOT have a 540RPM PTO. So its basically useless and a total waste of money. Although I did build a trailer ball mount for one at one of the landscape companies I worked at and it was AWESOME for moving trailers in and out of the shop in in the spring to service them.

I have both, a Ventrac with bucket and a John Deere 1025r with loader bucket and backhoe. There is no comparison here the Ventrac clearly wins in this type of lawn work, especially when it's wet. the small tractors with loaders have one main advantage, that is lift height. Aside from that, If I could only have one, it would be the Ventrac hands down.

I really like the ventrac and I always applaud outside the box thinking. I have a small 30 acre farm and there would be many ways I could use it. But I have an enemy here in NC that I have been battling since I was young and that is yellow jackets. I cannot count the times the cab has been covered by them, they like to build around the perimeter of the fields and all along the stream boundary. The only issue I have with the comparison would be turf instead of the r4's.

Okay KZbin, I finally watched the ad. So my take is that the compact tractor has a three-point, and can actually lift its bucket high enough to load a trailor. Also, I've seldom seen anyone do jobs like this without turf tires. The Ventrac is way behind in versatility. That being said, I'm surprised how retro it looks.

They both have their advantages. As others stated the tractor doesn't have the same turf tires, so that is not a good comparison. The tractor made a nice tall pile, whereas the Ventrac cannot lift nearly as high. Also, the tractor has a sun shade, and is probably diesel which will use less fuel. The tractor appears to have a larger loader bucket, which should have taken less trips. The video is not obvious why the Ventrac took less time.

That Yanmar is just over $14000 with the loader package, and is available with turf tires for no extra cost. The Ventrac has a starting price of almost $30000, and the loader doesn't raise high enough to be of any use.

Quick FYI - A Ventrac 4500 actuallly starts under $20,000 for the cheapest model and under $24,000 for the diesel model. Also, the bucket used in this video is not our loader. This one is only used for the tasks that are close to the ground like moving mulch, stone, loose material, etc. For lifting higher, we have an actual loader attachment as well. It's true, we're much more expensive than a traditional compact tractor. For the extra cost, our users really prioritize the light footprint, slope capability, mowing quality, ease of use, or some other aspect of our tractor. It's a very different machine - and as such, is not suitable for everybody.

We opted for our power bucket over the loader because it's much more popular, cheaper to purchase, and easier to store/own. We felt like it shows a more real-world test as to what is likely to be purchased and used and it also showcases how effective our power bucket is for tasks like this. A loader really isn't needed until you have to lift material over something.

Nope. We ran this test in one shot and didn't even do any pre-testing to confirm anything. We already know from years of operating Ventracs in spongy spring conditions that nothing will touch them. We simply chose this equipment based on what is commonly considered against a Ventrac tractor and that is a compact or sub-compact with construction style (as opposed to ag style) bar tires. The majority of turf tires you see are on golf courses, and if somebody were to use turf tires for anything other than mowing it would render a compact tractor pretty useless most of the year.

I like your comparison but next time put comparable tires on the equipment, the turf tires on the Ventrac doesn't tear up the lawn like the parcel ag tires on the compact, so if you put comparable turf tires on the compact then see the difference, and take the compact out of 4wheel drive unless you really need it. I think even if you had turf tires on the tractor or the new r14s there would still be more damage from the conventional tractor. As one owner of both a subcompact tractor and a ventrac pointed out, this particular application would just be better suited for the ventrac. For most tasks, you just drive the tractor on or over where you want to dump and proceed as normal. If you can get away with it, the power bucket shown in this video is actually a lot nicer to use than a loader because of the simplicity, maneuverability and visibility. For when you have to lift to a much higher height or when you can't drive over the obstacle, you would need our loader attachment. although VT has advantages of size and articulation in tight areas , this was a slanted demo , 1st as others mentioned tires make a huge difference , turf tires on the tractor would have displaced more weight doing far less damage - also the 'track or area being worked - good operator of the tractor would have "used the tractors advantages of bucket size ' stayed parallel with the pile of material being moved , moving forward out ..eliminating the 3 point turn , and staying in reverse returning back to that pile .( of course VT could have done the same however would have lost the race having a smaller bucket size

Isn't this why larger tractors offer different tire styles? There is Turf, Industrial and Agricultural tires on them. I don't exactly see the comparison at all in this. They are totally different machines. Yes the Ventrac is cool and is better for more compact areas. I also believe that the ventrac has a gas engine unlike a tractor with diesel. Bigger tractors are also much more versatile than Ventracs with more flexibility with the boom as well as having 3 point linkage.

I say there is no comparison between these two machines. the compact tractor is meant for more agricultural applications, it was made to get the task completed without caring how the ground is afterwards. The ventrac on the other is built like an upgraded lawnmower, of course it's going to win the competition because it is built to keep the lawn nice, but put the same ventrac in an agricultural situation and it will probably finish, but it won't do as good a job as the compact tractor. So to sum things up both tractors are built for a different purpose and so they should not be compared

That's why we made the video. There are far too many people out there relying on tractors that were intended for agricultural use as machines to do delicate work around areas like this. And it's understandable why: People are willing to accept a trade-off of a tractor not being great at turf related tasks for the versatility that it provides. BUT - Ventrac is the answer to that! That's what we try to get people to understand. You can have it both ways. With a Ventrac, you can do all of the turf related tasks perfectly and STILL get the versatility of a compact tractor. It is limited at the extremes of agricultural use, but what most people use a compact tractor for can EASILY be done by a Ventrac. Our customers already experience this, but sometimes it can be hard for people who are unfamiliar with Ventrac to believe. Just imagine how outrageous this video seems to some people - that's how much they DON'T understand Ventrac! We're here to give some truthful demonstrations that help people to reconsider everything they thought they knew about tractors.

That part of the job is obviously done at the mulch yard, and we'll be the first to admit; our tractor is no match for a large tractor or wheel loader in a mulch yard. The Ventrac is superior at the point of use, for spreading mulch without doing any damage to the property - which is what we are showing in this video. Different tasks, different tools. If you DO want to remove mulch from your property and load it into a pickup to truck away, then yes, a tractor with a loader is a better tool. We also have a loader attachment for the infrequent times that a higher lift height is needed.

Try this experiment again with a lower truck and dry ground. Other than that I would be on the side with the ventrac cause my neighbors all have them. I don't cause I have some older John Deere's that do the job. If it was cheaper I would get one but still verry nice tractors. I also have a skid steer. If you could do a comparison against the two that would be great.

Yes it is nice not to rip up the ground but by using this machine you cant tip dirt into trailers or pick ups only ground so thats a disadvantage and plus on the compact changing the tires will fix the terrain issue.

Yes the little one does do a lot better but you can't get a good enough height on either. And yes the other tractor does destroy the grass but if you fly in and out and spread some grass seed around on the grass grow back before you know it you'll be fine it'll look just as good.

Okay man, I agree, the tires are better on ventrac and a holy lord mowing lawns as it is basically a lawn mower with a brushhog, but damn, that was some desperate measure to make the time 3 minutes more on the compact tractor...

The thing they fail to mention is that you can put a mower and other implements on the compact tractor but not on the ventrac

And also the compact tractors has more torque the wheels spin more. The tires were the only thing wrong with it. An easy and quick fix. The ventrac however doesn't but has better tires. Hence another reason to fix you product

Hey ventrac, any plans for a machine that has a little more ground clearance? Maybe one geared more towards "agriculture property maintenance" and less towards "manicured lawn and landscaping maintenance"

I know this may seem dumb but why would dump mulch in the middle of your lawn then drive the same path multiple times I know your your trying to show how the ventrac has less ground impact but I think a better test would dump the pile on the driveway or close to it then carry the mulch to it's place time it and show the impact with the landscaping just a thought on how to make it more realistic
