Join us as we take Venture all the way from the Pacific Ocean 460 miles inland to Idaho up the Columbia and Snake rivers. Learn about the perils of the Columbia River Bar, the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition and the cataclysmic floods which altered the landscape through which we traveled. Stay with us while we take a jet boat through Hell's Gate on the upper Snake.

Simply the best travelogue I have ever viewed. Wonderful combination of video and stills. Wonderfully written and narrated. Thank you for sharing. I have been fascinated by this region since childhood and reading about the Lewis and Clark adventure. I love your weaving of history, present day, and geography. This is a journey I have imagined. Didn’t even realize it was possible to navigate all the way to Lewiston. And your boat is amazing! Thank you so much for this gift!!

Tony, I moved to the Fort Lewis/Stielacoom, WA area from Fort Leavenworth, KS area 37 years ago and your video is the first time I have seen the river view ride from Astoria to Lewiston, ID. I was mesmerized by it and couldn’t believe it was only 38 minutes long. I am thankful to you for it. Your narration was most informative and totally inspiring. I want to duplicate your Venture.

Years ago I was talking to Rick Steber(a writer of western books)and he was saying that he'd talked to a geologist that said the wall of water coming though Wallula Gap was 1,500' high when Lake Missoula burst. All I could think of was "those poor Indians" because even with our modern communications, thousands would die if that flood were to happen today. Another great video, Mr Fleming.

By a very large margin the best film I have seen for traveling the Columbia and Snake Rivers. I always wanted to do this trip from Lewiston to Astoria via my trailerable sailboat when I owned it. Never got it done though. Your film shows me a lot of what I missed. I also had the pleasure of working on the Columbia in the mid 90's between Portland and Cathlamit and was married in the park on the South side of the courthouse in Saint Helens. Know the river well in that section. Thank you for bringing back the memories!

I wish you had explained how the dams and locks have imperiled the Salmon. Here in Idaho there is a movement to remove the 4 lower Snake River dams which are no longer economically viable to improve the plight of the fish. What a treat to see photos of how the river used to be before the dams. Back then the Salmon were beyond plentiful. In southern Idaho in the Snake River the Salmon are now extinct due to the dams.

In the early 1800's fur traders travelled 1200 miles by canoes from the Columbia River headwaters in Canada's Rocky Mountains to Fort Astoria at the rivers mouth, the headwaters involved a crossing of the high Rockies by rough trail to pick up eastward flowing rivers near today's town of Jasper Alberta. There is even a small river there called the Astoria River, named by the traders after the Fort at the river's mouth.

Very good video and narration. We live in Alaska and our children live in Portland, Or. We have driven along the Columbia River many times, but have yet to experience a boat ride. We have to do that now! I loved the part about the jet boat ride into Hells Canyon. Many people have taken a ride in a similar very stout custom made jet boat through the lower part of Devils Canyon on The Susitna River just outside Denali Park in south central Alaska. My wife and I took this ride operated by the Mahays family out of Talkeetna, Alaska. You go through level 5 rapids up to Devils Rock. The boat captian holds the boat there for about 20 minutes while all passengers take their pictures of the wild gray and white water with Devils Rock in the background. Only two boats have been past Devils Rock because it is level 6 rapids and even more narrow. Then the captain turns the boat 180 degrees without hitting the walls of the canyon and back to the cute little town of Talkeetna you go.

I should like to add my appreciation for this Idaho voyage along the Columbia river. The filming, the music and your narration Mr Fleming are truly absorbing. Thank you. As a UK citizen my wife Barbara and I visited this area in 2018 following a drive up from San Francisco. We visited the Rose Gardens in Portland but our journey along the river was by train which took us overnight to East Glacier which although a fascinating journey was not able to encompass the many details you have covered in your film along the Columbia river. Sadly this was to be our last holiday together as my dear Barbara passed away last year (2021) after 50 years of marriage. Your film brought back many happy memories and we were both able to enjoy watching it prior to her passing and I now find it very restful to watch and watch again and it has inspired me to make the trip again one day, this time by road when I can absorb the highlights you so usefully brought out in your narration. Thank you once again, Alan Hobbs, Essex UK. PS Your 1959 Sahara journey is also a favourite.
