In this conclusion of my Archetype Series based on the book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette, I examine the archetype of the Magician and explore some related concepts such as initiation, ritual process and sacred space.

Thank you so much for these videos 🙏💗 As a combat vet with the US Army, that part where you mentioned how the military initiates you but fails to bring you back home really hit home and literally brought tears to my eyes. It is so true. So many of my brothers in arms are suffering, because it is so hard to integrate back into society on your own without a proper guide after being on the battlefield for multiple years. Without ayahuasca and then a meditation practice to take over from there, I shutter to think about where I would be right now. Probably dead or in prison. I want to make this perfectly clear tho; there are programs and support in place nowadays (much more than there used to be), to help with job placement, education, and health issues. That helps a lot, and frankly it's more than most Americans get. The problem is not that they don't want to help. The problem is they do not know how. This ties into the broader message of this video, how we, as a society, have lost the concepts of sacred space and liminal spaces. We have few places to go to reconnect to our deeper selves and truly grow which means affecting lasting change instead of momentary reprieve. So therefore, we too often become lost in the noise and become hopeless with no way out of our suffering. But although these sacred spaces are no longer promoted and advertised, they are still out there waiting to be found. "Seek and ye shall find" but remember, in the end, even the seeker must disappear.

Because they strike right into the core of humanity. These stories and archetypes are the foundation of our experience. Once pointed out, you see how they relate to your experience, and that makes it much more meaningful.

My God, I was about to make the same comment. When the experience of awe, of being small and insignificant against the backdrop of the universe is tapped into with the use of archetypal images, characters. music, etc. I always feel a longing to find that experience in real life. I find it strange that a movie can pull that emotion out of me---it exists, but where in everyday life?
@icywinterof88
@icywinterof88 6 жыл бұрын
OneBalance I feel like you can find this in life but it takes deep conversations with people. I think it's extremely hard if not impossible, to find these things in life by yourself. Only together can we find these things and put names to them.
@robotputty
@robotputty 6 жыл бұрын
OneBalance I don’t think we should be pursuing these archetypes or stories. (Not that I am saying that you implied that) I think we should go about our lives like we ordinarily would, and then we can look at how those archetypes can be applied to our lives situations.

People have such a hard time wrapping their heads around this concept, but I totally got it when I was out trying to hike the Appalachian Trail a few years ago. It starts out as just a hike, but as weeks pass, the walk itself becomes sacred. It enters your psyche and it becomes this source of energy in your memory that you continue to draw on years after you leave the trail. The trail is full of magicians, too: older hikers that guide you through the traditions of the trail, and even just other normal people that the trail introduces you to, that give alternate perspectives, helping you to expand your own understanding of your journey. It's so addictive and empowering, because completing a thru-hike isn't just a spiritual journey, it's also a quest that helps you understand your inner warrior. To find your limits, and to give you something to strive for that it is bigger than any material thing I've ever encountered in my life.

I choked up a dozen times while watching this…and I am in the midst of “The Sacred and The Profane “ by Mircea Eliade, to which there are references in this video. And in the way of the Magician, there abides a portal that, once one enters, alters perception by introducing an elevated level of consciousness that contains an almost laser like visual acuity, allowing extreme clarity of the whole and its parts, simultaneously, from its near atomic structure to the zoomed out long view. I have experienced this a few times, but it was temporary…like a two week free trial period, after which one drifts back to the ordinary. But, it always happened in a sacred place. It would seem that it may be time for me to venture deeper into this process, and journey onward, away from the fog… Blessings to you for creating this…

It can be difficult to find what you are looking for. The type of full experience you are looking for always have "ritual leaders". This is why religion is still so highly popular despite us living in an ever more fragmented world. True transformation is not possible without the existence of spiritual leaders that can humbly guide others through their own spiritual journeys. The problem with this is that there are very few capable, spiritual leaders, and among the many "Magicians" that exist there are a lot of "Shadow Magicians" selling snake oil, providing just enough for you to get something, but to also keep you coming back because they don't do it freely. Seeking status, control and power. I still encourage you to keep seeking. There are true guides out there still, and God can guide you if you keep seeking.

This is one of the things that modern church architecture (Catholic and protestant, Evangelical, and especially mega-church) doesn't understand. In most modern churches, there is no sense of the sacred. Churches cease to be places of encountering the sacred, and they become just human meeting places. But this doesn't fully satisfy the human soul, no matter how good the free coffee is.
@AbandonedVoid
@AbandonedVoid 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. There are some Christian places that there is a sense of the spiritual and the sacred, but for the most part it seems bastardized. I, myself, am a theistic Satanist and on the apex of our revival into the modern world we brought with us the complexities of occult magick and all of the warnings against it. Meditation, ritual, initiation, greater forces, introspection, and much more are integral to our craft and there is a real sense of sacred spaces. On the outskirts of our religion you will find those who, similar to modern Christianity, have lost the spirituality that was once at the core. Indeed, I think the witch burnings of the Catholic church and the conversion of pagans seemed to sweep spirituality as a whole out of the hands of the people. If you like this channel, "The Unexplored Depths of Spider-Man 3" actually gives a good analogue to the journey the church has taken so far. I do like that you point out that it's modern church architecture. There are some churches that still retain their spirituality, although they are difficult to find. I still don't agree with their message, their path isn't mine, but you would do well to seek out churches with ties to Rosicrucianism and possession by the holy spirit if this is something you're looking for. As cliché as it sounds, the Free Masons were once this, but in recent years they have corrupted and blurred their lines in the same way Anton LaVey did when he proclaimed a newfound atheism and drove away the closest to his original divinely-inspired message.

There's nobody left anymore who has any real teachings to pass on, all they know how to do is read from books to you and repeat what someone else read out of a book to them. The churches should have people who can see demons and clean your aura and be honest with you about spiritual health and tell you why you don't have any if so, etc etc, but - nobody teaches it, cause there's no teachers left. They all got killed off as witches or whatever, all the medicine men and women lost. Churches thesedays often still do condemn some evil but they go along with supporting systems that are clearly evil, as if they are actually ok. They are very 'blue pill' and that is why they can't help people who are 'woke' and this is a big problem, they are only much use for helping those who cannot think for themselves, and then only at lower levels. So nothing ever gets fixed in society and it just keeps on going the wrong way, as there is nothing and nobody to support those who are clever and 'awake' to how wrong this world all is. Best you get is likes of - um shave your head and wear a robe and change your diet. So what do we want, a world full of one type of mystic only, that is all they know how to do. It's more a refuge provision or likes of a spiritual halfway house. Blind leading the blind and all that.

Maaaaaan, the academic in me loves how many books you've referenced to back up your points. I can only think of a mythological magician and he might not even fit the bill - Tiresias from Greek mythology was a blind prophet (oh the irony) who was called upon to illuminate the truth to Oedipus about his mother, and he instructed Odysseus on how to get home. And in really minor Greek mythology Aeetes over time was written to be black hearted controlling despot by ancient poets, he was also a magician, so he fits the shadow magician quite nicely.

The rest, I guess, can only be understood emotionally - whatever that means (I only ever do that while asleep so I'm not sure). I think the video does quite impressive job given the premise. It expresses the emotional stuff quite strongly. Not that I understand any of that but it certainly is strongly present.

This video really touched me. My friend and I have recently decided to step away from the material world as much as is realistic. Only 8 months ago I was planning to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology but once a devastating event thrust me back onto a path of spirituality I've begun a path to seek to be a servant to as many people as I can in a new way. Practicing more tribal ceremony and studying more ancient ideas of the human psyche is a much greater tool of healing than the modern schools of psychology (in my opinion). I will, in about 7 more month, be traveling the country with people of the same intention. This video put the archetype of the magician/shaman/priest into a well structured simplification of an important component of tribes and communities

You should check out "Swiss Army Man" if you haven't already. You can analyze this movie over and over again and never get the same message from it. It kinda relates to magicians since "the inexplicable" is a big part of the story. Great video as usual. Peace!

There's an indian myth called: the King's Corpse, you wouldn't believe how many similarities are between that and the movie. You can check it out on Heinrich Zimmer's anthology of myths about resurrection compiled by Joseph Campbell... I posted an essay about it in my blog but in spanish...

Great video. However, I wouldn't say the trickster isn't a good magician. Western native people have the Katchina's/Sacred Clowns and many other types of tricksters. They serve a valuable purpose of turning what you think you know on it's head and also taking those too high on their horse down back to earth. Some even use humor to do so. I think they serve a purpose to shake you up, make you aware, and learn from your mistakes on your own. So then, you become the master by taking up your own responsibilities. It comes down to regeneration. And, at times a difficult lesson to learn.

Agreed. Everybody thinks The Fool is about to take a bad fall, but he isn't. He's going to waltz right into that far off cloud bank and everyone is going to wonder how he did it.

I agree. There's even examples of the trickster magician taking on a more benevolent role in literature, even if those characters have their own problems. Brandon Sanderson writes about such a character called the king's wit in his fantasy series A Stormlight Archive. He is their world's version of the court jester or fool, and oftentimes will speak his mind even if he is insulting the king himself. He ends up being a character that is guiding people behind the scenes and more influential than just being a fool.
@yellowkidJL
@yellowkidJL 5 жыл бұрын
Might argue that the court jester, being the one to sneak into the King’s court and speak his truth - often times artfully through plays or songs - under guise of a ‘fool’ is actually an evolved magician all along. I like (and appreciate) the distinction of the trickster evolving by determination of a nobler end for his own traveled path. The magician/trickster probably IS a bit childlike, which I love. But without discovering maturity is simply reckless, undermining for his own personal amusement or gain.

@@yellowkidJL I agree. Take for example Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. While Gandalf is a wise and mature figure, he very often shows displays of humor, indicating that an enlightened role model is not above acts of whimsy or mockery.

Correct. It's best to think of the Trickster as a teacher. Folly is often used to prevent us from taking the wrong path.

I've done it. When I first started hiking nature terrified me. I felt there was something in the bushes about to jump out at me. Then I realized I was feeling the spirit of the trees bushes etc. Then I decided to go all out. Now I'm not scared at all. I prefer hiking at night. I love the feeling of being alert and using all my senses to navigate my way.

Lol. It did by deconstructing and reconstructing the Magician and the Warrior archetypes, but it seems you didn't notice. The truth of the concept of archetypes lies in the fact that they only work correctly when we stop looking outside ourselves for these qualities and start to embody them ourselves. Just a thought.

"The magician knows not to force social change." Wow, take notes politicians.
@artstrology
@artstrology 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it is a bit more complex than that. The politician is a different archetype, and the magician can walk in that world, and simply by being present, bring healthy transformations. The politicians at one time, were required to complete the spiritual training before being eligible to lead the people. It is one of many specialties of the magician archetype to be present in those spaces, and it is what is missing in US culture. Many politicians went to Standing Rock and were transformed as were many ex soldiers,. it was just the exposure to the "sense of sacred" that was transformative. They simply hadn't had the experience. Many veterans now take spiritual journeys far away to find it, and it should be available to everyone in our own communities. it's not that hard.

Sorry, but sometimes social change HAS to be forced. How do you think the Americans gained independence from the British? How do you think we abolished slavery? How do you think we ended segregation? These things didn't just happen on their own. We forced them to happen in the face of stubborn opposition.
