@@sylvianobles4983 Hi there and thanks for your question. You can visit a pet store and often they will stock live prey items. Just be sure that they're not too large for the traps you're going to be feeding. You want the trap to completely close around the food items so there's complete digestion. Pet stores will also often stock frozen blood worms in handy blister packs. I've been using these with nice results. Just remember to thaw them out by placing the worms into a sealed container in warm water. Hope this helps ...

@@Winnie-oj6pi Are you based in the Northern Hemisphere ? As winter approaches there'll be changes to the leaves. The summer leaves will start to brown off and be replaced with shorter Fall / Winter leaves. Unless you understand this its easy to assume that there's something wrong with your plant. Here's the link to my video that explains this further: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6G0pZWVgaaGb7csi=KriGGUF3UCXEVwUa Otherwise all I can suggest is that you cover all the basics such as providing sufficient sunlight, giving your plant access to catch its own insects, using soft water (not tapwater) to water your plant and ensuring the potting medium is peat moss based. Note: In winter areas where it drops into the mid 20⁰F (4⁰C), ALL of the leaves may die back and turn black. Don't toss it, the below surface rhizome is most likely still alive. Thanks for the great video.

I rescued a couple plants being marked down at Walmart. Now I am trying to find out how to grow them. Thanks. My question is, if you leave them outside all the time, how cold can it stand before I need to protect them?

I use a 'turkey baster', to water the plant soil, under the leaves, to as not to trigger the traps..works well!

Glad to hear you feel enlightened and hopefully inspired to grow VFTs ....they really are amazing plants. Its only recently I discovered why some flytraps close slowly (see my idea short). Anyway when it comes to kangaroo husbandry I'd rather just see them in the wild. I was lucky enough to see two male kangaroos sparring ....... they really do box AND kick. Happy growing to you and really do try to grow a VFT ....... 👍

I never thought of using fishing line to trigger the digestive response! I'll definitely try that! It's my third summer (northern hemisphere) with VFTs. I like watching new videos to pick up new tips haha

Hi there.....I'm glad you found some value in the video. I love to watch VFT's catching their own prey.....especially flies. The fishing line method cane about after I noticed gaps in between the 'teeth' on the outer edges of the traps after initially closing. One day I placed some line in between the teeth and started twirling it. To my surprise the plant was tricked into thinking there was something edible inside. It really was a memorable discovery....happy growing to you!

Jerry my man. Just got a Venus and we've named it burt😊. He's being abit of a lazy f**k at the min and ain't feeling a juicy fly. I think his last owners have mistreated him. Is just still bottled water ok ? What to give him the best life he deserves and forget his neglected childhood. All the care work is appreciated 👍

Hi there .....I would test the water out first with a TDS meter before trialling out drinking water. Drinking water maybe ok to drink but it may have high dissolved solids in there so test first. Try to give as much sunlight as you can. Repot into fresh peat moss in early spring. As soon as Burt gets better watch him chase the flies......something I never tire of watching....😅

Great video! I have had my VFTs for a year but they are still in the small pots and I see your have larger one pots and wonder if a bigger pot is more advantageous for eighth and longer roots. I am concerned that the pots dry out too fast and I worry that the plants dry and fry in the summer when it's hot. Thanks.

Hi there ....happy to hear you enjoyed the video! I recommend 140 mm (5.5 inch) high pots as a minimum. The 200mm (7.87 inch) pots being a larger pot contain more peat moss. The extra peat moss does a better job of maintaining a more constant temperature around the roots. From my experience at the markets many growers pay too much attention to the leaves / traps and not enough attention to the roots. As an example when I first grew my VFT pot plant I realised it wasn't growing so well in summer. It dawned on me one hot afternoon when I touched the side of the pot ....it was hot! I'm pretty sure the plant was heat stressed. After I surrounded the VFT pot with other pot plants (to not expose the VFT pot to temperature variations) I realised the Venus Flytrap was more vibrant looking....particularly during those hot days. With regards to the pots drying out so fast just make sure there's plenty of water in the tray....especially during those hot days. VFT's can handle more water than what many people realise (I've had my VFT's totally submerged in rain water) and they all survived. If it's a hot day you can fill the water tray up to half the height of the pot. It also helps to sit the water tray on non conductive materials such as wood so the water trays don't heat up so much. Anyway I digress but hopefully you get the idea ...happy growing to you!

You are all so lucky, must be heaven to live in a Country with a proper Summer. Unfortunately i live in hell called "Northern Ireland" all we get here is Rain & Storm 300+ days a year. If you try to plant something in your Garden , it will be destroyed within a week by another storm. Everything has to be done indoors here . That's why my Home is full of Plants and Terrariums . I recently started to grow Fly Traps

Really enjoyed your video and found it very informative. I'm in the USA but the techniques are very helpful and did help me clear up some confusion I had about watering. I had been told to allow the pot to dry up for 2 or 3 days while cheching the medium to make sure it was still damp. I actually put them in a dry tray and monitor the medium daily.. You confirmed that information so Thank You!

I always speed up the pace I watch in the videos and no hate at all I actually got the most out of this video then any of the other ones regardless of likes veiws or subscribers. I started to drift off while begging to watch on normal speed. And video is the first I've ever seen at the 1.75x speed and I did notice that these plants have lotterally been with him since seed so you do have to factor in that you may be adopting a plant and giving it a completely different routine, always inquire with the grower!!!! Thanks for your content!

An easier way to make digestion occur is to gently squeeze the outsides of the trap a few times after closing. :)

Yes I tried that a couple of times and it does work. However I just feel that the fishing line technique is more precise. You can target individual traps better without triggering other traps.....just my preference.......happy growing to you.

Thanks! I just bought a plant, since I have feeder bugs anyway for my spiders, and figured the plant could eat them, too. Your video probably saved my plant. It looks fine, still, but I will repot with peat moss/perlite, and change how I water it. I also didn't realize about dormancy. So I will accommodate that so it gets to hibernate a while. This was a VERY helpful video!

I have the two little pots I bought sitting in a tray of water sitting by a southwest facing window. I'll watch more of your videos to pick up some more tips. Since it rarelyy gets below zero degrees celcius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) here in Sydney I can't definitely tell you how low temperatures Venus Flytraps can handle. My best bet is to try Flytrapcare chat forums which are super helpful ......I wish you all the best with your plants.

Hi there ....happy you enjoyed the video. The winters here in Sydney Australia get down to single digit figures in degrees celcius (overnight that is). It never snows here although we do get frosts. I'm really not sure how well they endure freezing, snowy conditions.....check online for this info. Happy growing to you.

I bought one that I thought looked more healthy than it actually was... I got home and it was super droopy and dry when I pulled it out. I fed it and repotted it now I'm just waiting to see if it'll survive... I'm using RO/DI water and carnivorous plant soil with added peat moss as a topper. I hope it'll turn out ok

Thanks for your comment. I have heard of water from an AC being used to water carnivorous plants. However I haven't used it myself. What would recommend is testing out the water using a TDS meter. This will give you more confidence and piece of mind when using the water for your plants. Happy growing to you....

Hi there .......this technique is something I just came up with myself. I noticed that after triggering the traps there were gaps between the teeth of the traps. I was then able to insert the fishing line between the gaps and to my amazement the plants were tricked into thinking there was something alive in there. In my experience the success rate has been pretty high ........around 90%. I've found that after about a minute the traps will start to seal around the edges. It also depends on the individual plant I've found. Some may take a longer or shorter time ........its best to just to experiment. Thanks for your compliment......it means a lot to me!

I remember I threw mine out, and I have no idea how to care for it back when I was a teen. Looking back I wish I never threw it out. Now I have a basic understanding it's a very easy plant just add distilled water to the bowl and give it food since I have mine indoors under grow light. I am thinking of getting another stand and making it dedicated to all types of carnivore plants

You're absolutely right ....it is an easy plant to care for but you do have to know the basics. ...water, light and potting medium INCLUDING the life cycle of the plant. Great Video, very informative for a first timer like me. I have a question regarding watering…..can you just boil a jug of water from the tap, and use the cooled water from that?

The minerals in tap water are not removed by boiling . For a healthy flytrap, you do need to use rain water, distilled, de-ionised or reverse osmosis water. Alternatively, you might be able to find a brand of bottled spring water that is suitable, but you would need to check that the Total Dissolved Solids are less than 50ppm (as Jerry said), using a TDS meter.

Hello 👋. Very informative video, by the way. I recently rescued a couple of flytraps from a local garden centre, they were on offer and looking a little ropey. I have a question for you. One seems to have no issues catching insects, traps work perfectly. But the other one doesn't seem to be able to have its traps triggered? I've tried manually to do this by tickling the hairs inside with a re-hydrated meal worm, but non of the traps seem to function? The plant looks healthy apart from the leaves of the traps seem to curl out slightly, compared with the other plant. Any advise would be welcome. 👍 p.s. I tried the same technique on the other plant, and it works a treat.

My leaves are flat to the soil. I worry they might get too wet. Does this mean it’s not healthy I just bought it. They don’t seem to stick straight up like yours do

Hi there and thanks for your enquiry. The type of cultivar that you have and the time of year determines how your plant looks. For example my Big Mouth cultivars have big red traps with short leaf bases. The shorter leaf bases makes the plants produce traps which are flatter or closer to the ground. Other cultivars such as Dentate produce upward facing traps with long leaf bases. Also in mid to late Autumn (Fall) plants produce shorter stubbier leaves. This prepares the plant for winter dormancy. Again the shorter leaf bases makes the traps appear to be flatter to the soil. This is especially noticeable with long leafed cultivars such as Dentate (Sharks Tooth) and G16 x G16. If your not sure if your plant is healthy or not then I always advise to make sure you're getting the 5 basics right (see below). At least you then know that the GROWING AND CARE REQUIREMENTS have been met: - Light (at least 5 hours of direct sunlight) - Water (making sure your potting medium never dries out). - The quality of the water which is adequate (not too high in dissolved solids - less than 50 ppm). - Using a peat moss based medium aerated with pumice or sand. - Acess to insects (or food items) for extra vitality and growth. Fantastic video thanks! I would like to know how the plants go dormant in Australian temperatures. I thought (i may be misinformed) that the dormant vft needed a temperature between 0 and 12 degrees celsius for about three months. Does it get that cold where you are? Im wondering if the temperature doesnt really matter during dormancy.

Hi there... thanks for your comment and I'm thrilled you enjoyed the video 😃😃 It does get pretty cold here in winter here in Sydney, Australia. We're still in winter here right now. Temperatures have gotten down to as cold as 5 degrees celcius overnight. Average day temps have been around 19 degrees celcius. With spring just around the corner we're getting tempe up to 23 degrees celcius. I'm pretty sure temps do matter in combination with sunlight changes. It would be a challenge getting your VFT to go dormant in a tropical area. .....you would to induce dormancy. Having said this I'm not sure of the winter temperature threshold that triggers dormancy in VFTs. May be worth experimenting.....happy growing to you!

Feeding them just once a week is enough and just with one pray, there is no need to do more. Anyway if they are outside, they will catch their own food

i ran pvc pipe into a square underneath the substrate before i filled my planters and drilled holes in the bottom square to bottom water, and i have some 5 gallon buckets catching rain to water through the pipe with a funnel. then i hide the pipe sticking out with rocks 🪨

@succulentflytraps no manually poor it. a standard kitchen funnel fits into the 1 inch pvc pipe I used. I also drilled holes about 3 inches down from the top so it doesn't get standing water in the top portion.

Hi, yesterday I repotted my venus fly trap, I did the same with another one, and it was fine, but the second one looks completely dried out and deformed one day later, yesterday it was healthy. I gave it a lot of water and placed it in the sunlight (in a different place, but same amout of sunlight) but it looks terrible. Do you have any idea what could have happened? Also, while watering the sun completely vaporates the water, should i just water ant night?

Hi there....sometimes you just have to be patient with your plants....even if they don't look the best. I've had many plants take their time recovering after repotting .....its quite a traumatic time for the plant and often you just need to let nature take its course. What's important is that you're providing the BASIC care for your plants ....adequate light, potting medium, watering and repotting in your instance. I hope your plant recovers! You can let your tray dry out....what's important is that the peat moss never dried out and stays damp. Happy growing and re-potting to you.

I live is AZ, 324 days of sunshine called the Valley of the Sun. In summer temps can reach 118+. My windows face south and west. So no dormancy. What should i do? I keep her indoors.

@@SeasonedBeauty_MyrnieS Hi there and thanks for your enquiry. I just had a look at some forums on Flytrap care. It seems it gets cold enough there during the winter for dormancy to occur naturally. I would place your plant outside during your winter period just for the plant to experience the colder nights. This will give a clear signal to the plant that winter has arrived and this should trigger dormancy in your plant. Even with freezing temps your plant should still be ok. I mean that's the reason why they go dormant...to protect themselves from harsh conditions. With regards to hot temperatures I have my plants in full sun. Last summer we got temps up to 42 degrees celcius (108 degrees Fahrenheit). My plants were ok. Having said this I would monitor your plants for any leaf burn (look for black patches around the edges of NEWER traps). I say newer traps because older traps eventually get darker around the edges too as they die off. If you get burning of traps consider uding a shade cloth. Or since your growing your plant indoors consider repositioning your plant so it doesn't get the full brunt of the sun (late afternoon ....3 pm onwards). Do long as you're plant gets at least 5 hrs of direct sunlight your plant should be fine.

Hi Jerry, I have another question for you. I accidently broke off the top of my Pitcher Fly Trap. I broke off the top new leaf that was unfolding out of the older leaf and the leaf that it was unfolding out of. Will a new leaf come out of the topped off plant or is it done for? Please tell me that a new leaf will begin growing out of the break off point.😢😢🙏🙏🙏

Hi there ..... Relax its ok. I've broken tips many times. Just to let you know that It won't grow from the same broken leaf shoot. When you break the shoot the plant won't continue developing it. Instead it will start to divert energy into another growth point. This will happen sooner than you think. Before you know it you'll have r plenty of brand new shoots popping out of the rhizome. Hello and thank you for your enquiry. If you've been keeping your plant indoors and your plant has goes through dormancy then it should be ok where it is. However since I have an outdoor nursery then I have no choice and simply leave the plants where they are. So long as you don't experience any sustained frosts or snow (which can damage Venus Flytap rhizomes) then the option to keep your plant outdoors in winter is totally up yo you. I am in the United States and I just returned from a trip to North Carolina where I purchased several plants including a teeny tiny Venus fly trap. I am curious if they need to be fed when they are so tiny? I purchased it from a nursery and I believe they were fed a tiny bit of plant food as they were planted from seeds and just getting started in life.

Hi there ...........your query made me reminisce when I got myself a tiny Venus Flytrap years ago. I remember peering into the tiny traps and seeing trapped insects. I would then hold the traps into the sunlight to see the silhouette inside the traps. To me the silhouettes looked like ants. Sure enough one day I saw ants crawling around the traps .....I even saw one getting caught! From then on I placed my pot plant on the ground and placed little twigs leading up the plant over the water tray. These twigs acted like little bridges for the ants. Sure enough a lot of the traps were trapping ants! The lesson is that the plants look after themselves when it comes to catching prey. Growing them outdoors is always best.....and don't forget to make it easier for TERRESTRIAL insects to reach your plant ....hope this helps...🤩

It depends from plant to plant. Is it small, sickly or going dormant, the answer is to cut it off. That´s how I do it anyway. And always think if you need the flower to get seeds as well, it could make your choice easier

Hi there .....thanks for your comment. I cut off the flowers for a plant which develops stronger leaf or trap growth. Some of my Venus Flytraps developed multiple flower stalks even in late summer. Unless you want seeds from your plant just cut off your flower stalks. Happy growing to you ....

If you want a bigger vibrant plant cut them off before they flower,2-3 inches in length .if you want to cultivate from seed let them flower and cross pollinate

How about using bottled mineral water? To water them that is. I can't see that being a problem.

It will kill them. They cannot tolerate minerals in their water. Mineral content needs to be below 50 ppm and preferably less.

My Venus FlyTrap has 10-12 arms or leaves with traps but none of the traps will close. I have caught a fly and tried to get every trap to close on the fly ,but nothing, so I dropped the fly into one of the pitchers on my Nepenthes, is that ok for the pitcher to eat flies?

@succulentflytraps o... it's an only patio pond tub. the flytraps and pitchers have loads of room to spread for a few years yet. the only other thing in it is creeping Jenny because I guessed it could handle the moisture from using it as a pond border plant and it always throws roots in the water when it spills in. I just try to keep it away from where the carnivorous plants are. but there is so much surface area ro cover and I don't want to mulch it and get too many nutrients in. I am hoping the jennies are absorbing at least what that add to the soil from fallen leaves, they (the creeping jenny) are pretty yellow, but still growing so I think they are fulfilling both of the jobs I put them there for as a moisture trap and nutrient pull

Hi there ....I sell beautiful healthy specimens but only to certain states within Australia. Otherwise try specialist nurseries or research online. Large retailers here do sell them but I find that the plants are in poor condition and the pots way too small.

I have a question for you. I picked up a venus flytrap from the grocery store. I noticed that it doesn't have the red in the center of the trap. Is that a sign that the trap is dying or is that something that just happens and over time it gets that red color?

Hi there.....excellent question! Its something that I often wondered about when I first started growing these plants. The type of cultivar as well as growing conditions determines whether the traps turn red or not. My popular Big Mouth cultivar turns a lipstick red colour when I grow my plants in my outdoor nursery. The plants get around 7-8 hours of direct sunlight. I have another Typical Form of plant which only turns a faint red colour. Both types are getting the same growing conditions....its just that individual plant's characteristics differ. My advice is to provide more than enough sunlight (greater then 5 hours). If the plant DOESN'T turn red then you can pretty sure its just the characteristics of the plant (or cultivar - cultivated variety)....happy growing to you..😃

As for growth, does it get bigger if I repot it later on in the future or is it stuck relatively at the same size? Also I named my plant "Audrey 2." @@TheConnonedrum @TheConnonedrum Hi there and thanks for your enquiry. It depends on whether your plant immature or not. If its still young the plant will continue to grow larger traps. Of course there's a maximum as to how large the traps get and this is when the plant 'peaks'. I have plants at my nursery which get up to 3 to 3.5 inches in length. Once the plant gets to its maximum traps size it then starts to develop tiny plants or offshoots from the main rhizome. Over time these offshoots get larger taking up more space. You can leave your pot plant as it is for years and it will happily grow along with its genetically same clones. Once the pot gets too crowded, untidy or you just want the plants to be more presentable then you can start to carefully divide the plants from the main rhizome. You can place the offshoots into separate pots or put them all into a larger pot. I would repot / divide the plants in late winter or early spring. Its always nice to see offshoots because it's a sign your plant is happy and comfortable. Audrey 2 was the main character in the Little Shop of Horrors.....👍

Hi there ......I don't think its related to the PH being too low. Venus Flytraps love to grow in peat moss based medium. Peat moss by its nature has high acidity with a low PH reading.

Hi there ...make sure you're providing the basic care for your plant... ..plenty of sunlight, proper water (soft water and not tap water) and give your plant the opportunity to catch insects. If growing indoors then consider feeding your plant. I'm not sure if you're in the Northern Hemisphere or not but if you are then I would wait for late winter or early to arrive before re-potting. Re-potting is a stressful time for plants. Right now your plant needs tender care and not added stress by repotting. Hope this helps and all the very best to you and your plant.

HI there ......I'm not sure exactly. Sometimes the traps just can't digest the food item. Maybe the digestive enzymes leak out of the trap causing the trap to turn black ......just a guess.....happy growing to you!
