Wow. Really captures the essence of 70s punk ... and John Constantine. It really seems as though the character is singing the song. Like he's truly the living urban legend of the East End as described on the opening page of Hellblazer #1.
@Fernyxferny12 жыл бұрын
You've hit another nail perfectly. Hellblazer always felt real. Part of its charm and MAGIC -yes, pun fucking intended- was bringing the supernatural into the mundane, but being strongly rooted in that mundane world. John didn't feel like a friend or an acquaintance because he sold himself like that; it was because he felt like a real person. He talked like one, thought like one, suffered like one. Not just a magic man, nor a conman, nor an everyman, but a combination of all.

110% exactly sentiments. As the reader many times in Hellblazer you're almost never quite sure if he's actually doing Magic or if it's all some elaborate Con. In the New52 in JLD he's as much a superhero as any of the capes & masks, and now they've made magic feel like a superpower.

Thanks for your kind comments. Someone recently told me on twitter "I like it but wasn't the point that it was supposed to suck?" I said, sure, but if it totally sucked, no one would listen to it, would they? And the first version sucked horribly as several members of the Hellblazer forum can attest. I know it's not everyone's cuppa, and I have heard that other bands are thinking about doing their own versions which would kick ass. I was a yank punk--more into black flag, husker du, minutemen, etc. Though I loved crass, UK subs and too many others to list. You can hear the difference betw US & UK punk through my shit Brit accent but understand this, oh blazers of hell: it was a labour of love, innit? Cheers to all of you!

It's funny, I didn't really like this version the first time I heard it, primarily because I expected something more raw and violent, rather than melancholic. The key is to get a good writer in there and stop with the super team-ups with superheros and other DC properties. At least in Vertigo's universe, Swampy and Zee were the only other DC characters John ran into, and the only other Vertigo one was Morpheus. I think other bands should do it. I originally had planned it to be a collaborative project with other musically inclined Hellblazer fans back in '06 when it was first recorded, but I got really sick while it was going on--I actually had pneumonia when I recorded the vocals. I was told through a grapevine of sorts that a friend in Norway is considering doing a version. That would rock--maybe we could put out a CD with the different versions if other bands throw in their lot. Obviously I take no ownership of the song nor do I find it any sort of bother if someone recorded a better version that mine. Mine is first, not necessarily best. Though I really hope they don't do a Green Day version for the show. Please Constantine producers: you don't have to use mine, but for fuck's sakes, don't cheese the shit out of a new version just because you wanted it for the show. (no offense to Green Day or their fans, but it should be something MORE authentic UK punk sounding than mine or don't do it at all). I don't want to get tweets after the fact saying "your version was better" because that's not good for the show, right? God, don't I sound like a prick. I'm not, really!
