Verapamil || Mechanism, side effects and uses

Verapamil is a L-type calcium channel blocker that is indicated for cardiac arrhythmias, angina and for essential hypertension. This drug is selective for cardiac muscle thereby it reduces both rate and force of contraction of the heart.

Drug interaction is observed with both alpha blockers as well as with beta blockers. Significant drug interaction mainly observed with alpha blockers where this combination produces severe hypotension. Similarly other antiarrhythmic agents including beta blockers can produce a significant cardiac inhibition when given with verapamil. Particularly BB when given by IV route shows significant interaction with verapamil.
